That camera is a Google Nest, not Ring
I know people use "ring" as a generic term. But if it's true that you can't access videos without paying monthly, I'm not sure why people still use ring. My Eufy goes back months with no monthly payment. I'm not sure about Google Nest that you mentioned. Hopefully, the one she used kept video- whether through a monthly subscription or one that keeps it without making you pay.

The email, a burner phone could have been used to set up and email, with or without a VPN, I am not sure how easy it would be to trace.
I am a techno dinosaur. But... I think the answer could be: Who is trying to trace it?

For example is the "who": a jealous ex husband in IT? The police of Smallville, Arkansas? Georgia Bureau of Investigation....

By the time one reaches the top of the food chain (FBI) and the associated national level resources, I am going with @Puzzles8 in that there are very few, if any, untraceable communications. I would not be surprised that defeating national level tracing attempts may require assistance from the national level resources of another nation.

Very frightening case. Especially for those of us with older parents.

So, my vice is cigarette smoking.

In the 30+ years since my parents moved to Florida, I would come down during Presidents’ Week when NYC teachers are off, ignore my parents completely, and hang out at one of the pools from morning until the sun went down, very contentedly swimming, tanning and smoking.

Now, though, with my parents in their 90s and both very sick in different ways, and since I retired, I come down every other month to provide company for my dad and to keep an eye on him, and to visit my mom in memory care.

Up until Nancy Guthrie, which happened while I am here in Florida, I would meander outside at night without locking my father’s door, and smoke too much.

NOW, when I go out to smoke, (my dad is in bed by 8:00), I stand in front of his first floor condo like a lioness, with the door double locked behind me. This is a gated community, but things have happened here nevertheless.

He’s not rich and I’m not famous, but this is it now. Not going to let my habit endanger my father.

( It’s also REALLY cold here in Florida! I’m still wearing my winter coat that I usually shed the instant I land).

My guess is they are smart enough to not be found yet by the local LE or FBI. I'm sure we would have heard something by now if they found them? Maybe?

If the bitcoin address given has been used before, they may be able to use it to track the owner if they used an online wallet in the past. I believe all online wallets require verification of personal information and would be traceable. If they are using a new, never used bitcoin address and a cold storage (offline/no online wallet), then there is nothing to trace.

I know enough about bitcoin but by no means a pro lol

The email, a burner phone could have been used to set up and email, with or without a VPN, I am not sure how easy it would be to trace. Even using public wifi may help hide their personal information? But not sure. That would be pretty smart.

all JMO
Is there somewhere outside the U.S. they might travel to in order to be in place to "manage" the ransom when it hits?

The timing in the ransom note - as I understand it - suggests travel to me. Getting themselves in place to receive a large amount, then move it about.

Is there any location known for that that you know of?

Just watched the Nancy Grace interview on Fox. She stated that it (doorbell camera) WAS NOT connected to the cloud, only connected to a server in the home. She also said it records over every 8 hours and LE is working now to recreate the images. She didn't give up her source.

Do you recall the case where an older man’s wife was taken, ransom note sent, and she was never returned? The result ended up being an acquaintance of the husband and he was charged with kidnapping but never admitted killing her. She was never found and IIRC the husband died without ever finding her. All that to say…. This reminds me of that case. I sure hope they find her unharmed, but I fear not with the photos showing all of the blood at the door.

Going to be honest here. Not sure I would open my door for a stranger at all. I'll talk to them through the wrought iron, call who ever they need me to call, but I am NOT opening the door.
Very smart, never open the door to strangers in the evenings. It's well known criminals use a crying woman to make you open the door and then jump on you, rob you, etc. Persons known to you would call you to tell you they are coming over in case of emergency or whatever.
Never open the door at night people!

why would someone install a camera that records over itself every 8 hours? I know the option is there to pay for a subscription but if not paying for that, what is the point if losing data in 8 hours?

Do we know about the security system at the home. Did she have an outside company in addition to a home camera system? What about a medical alert? Or, did she rely solely on her Apple watch? I know some seniors wear those medical alerts 24/7.

Soooo... The perp actually did LE a favor by removing the camera. If it had just been left in place - It likely would've recorded over the relevant time frame before the camera could be dumped for data.

I'm just wondering, we hear about Savannah and Annie but nothing from her son. The daughters have both made statements as i remember but not the son. Why? What's up with him? Very little i could find about this man.

It may be a really old security system. I had one with a home server 15+ years ago. Some people are set in their ways and don't want to change. She probably just used that camera to see who was at the door?

I am really not sure, and I don't have enough funds in my wallet to be concerned about it haha

She obviously had a circle of friends at church. I am sure they got together socially and she probably talked about her family including her daughter Annie Guthrie...they probably had met her. Phone numbers might have been exchanged for some reason or often easy enough to find online. They did not call Savannah.
Right.

Also, isn’t it possible Annie could even have been a less active member of the same church?

She may not have attended as frequently as Nancy, but she still possibly could have been involved enough to have had her phone number listed in a church member directory, right? My opinion & conjecture only.

Does anyone think this could be related to SG covering the Olympics, the national coverage and sometimes controversy when the world's current events are a little rocky? This is not political whatsoever.
I imagine that anything SG said on any given day on the Today Show has the potential to send an unemployed (able) key board warrior into a fit.

But... the miffed keyboarder then retaliates not by the SOP- sending an expletive laden email to the Show, but by kidnapping SG's mother? Like yourself, I just don't see it.

The factor in the Olympian social dynamics: This is still pre Olympics, so SG could not have been perceived as 'dissing the hometown hero with a medal.

Even with medals, the Olympics have been in a slow decline for decades. Sure, there are plenty of fans out there. But, over all interest has still declined and fewer people see successful Olympians as national figures, hometown super heroes, or personal idols.

Though it just takes one person who does have those views to meltdown and act on them in an extreme way, I share your opinion in that, while its possible, it just does not seem very likely.

It’s also important to remember that even older women with children can be in a DV relationship. No idea if that is the case here, but something to consider.
I live less than a mile from NG. They are a well known and well liked family here in Tucson. NG's husband passed away when SG was a teenager. No DV here.

I've been curious as well. I can't remember if he lives near NG or not

In my opinion I really don't think it's related to the upcoming games but just curious if anyone else was brainstorming and had similar thoughts
The timing is interesting since Savannah was to leave today for the Olympics. Agreed. Not sure whether that is coincidental or not, but like you, the thought did cross my mind.

This shouldn't be that hard for LE or FBI to do if they have the storage box from the house. Just connect it, or turn it on, or does she have an app on her phone? Look at it. This seems odd to me.

Good point.

One might say that having such a number would be triple odd if the daughter is wealthy, beautiful, and in a visible, stalker prone profession.

One possible explanation could be that the number was not direct, but was some sort of "can be reached via..." type desk number. But even still, II would not be surprised if even say, the Today Shows admin section number is not readily passed out either.
probably called the "other" daughter who is local
