It could simply be a reference to when they went to the house after Nancy's church friends got in touch.
If he dropped her off at 10, and she was gone at 2 am, then when would he have checked in on her?
And why?

Well even if he didn’t check in on her after dropping her off, he was still the last to see her.
But if he checked in on her after the friends called, then he would have seen the blood and reported it right?
And whatever was in the house.
We have conflicting reporting on whether the front door was locked.
