AZ Nancy Guthrie, 84, (mother of TODAY Show host Savannah Guthrie) missing - last seen in the Catalina foothills area on Jan 31, 2026

The Pima County Sheriff's Department tells TMZ ... in early January, an elderly man spotted the trespasser at his Tucson home, less than 10 minutes away from 84-year-old Nancy's house. The sheriff's department said the case was forwarded to the unit investigating Nancy's case for possible leads.

TMZ spoke to the elderly man, who says he caught the loiterer in his yard after a motion sensor went off and a floodlight switched on. We're told the light spooked the uninvited guest, who fled on foot before anyone could get a good look at his face. The man noted there was no break-in attempt and nothing was stolen from his yard.

The report does not say, but it would be nice to know - rather than just to assume - that this trespassing occurred during hours of darkness.

This trespasser fled once the light turned on, which to me indicates this is likely someone intent on theft only (or possibly a voyeur), who would avoid a person to person encounter.

Am I the only one surprised media camera's are going right up to her door and zooming in on blood drops and where the nest camera was? Why is her house not taped off? Brian Entin said it is no longer a crime scene but how can that possibly be. I understand FBI/LE took their crime scene photographs and samples but, still, we don't need people walking all over her property while this poor woman is still missing.

I think of the dreadful college murders in Idaho and, just like this case, obviously had huge media attention with media trucks camped out, day and night. And in Moscow they had the bodies, removed them and it still was taped off immediately.

I just find it appalling, honestly.
They must know more than they are saying IMO Usually, I thought there would be police securing the property and or guarding it. Not handing it back over to the family, in case they needed to collect more evidence or missed something. It doesn’t make sense?! Unless they know all they need to know? MOO

DM saying the sheriff thinks she is alive.

this is some crazy bs. wow..they have no idea where she is though. mOO

No. They are fairly lightweight. I think they are made of some kind of thick polyethylene. Heavier than a 24" round garbage can lid, but easy for one small person to unscrew the bolts, then lift and set aside.

Here is a pic:
Removing a septic tank lid without a backhoe would be time consuming and labor intensive and leave the ground greatly disturbed.

Just like there is a distinction between SIL being the prime suspect and "maybe" being the prime suspect, there is nuance to what LE said as well. They said "we don't have a prime suspect" not "The SIL is cleared" -- just because they have not named him does not mean he is cleared in any way shape or form. As is usually the case, they are gathering evidence. If I had to price this, I am putting the SIL as far and away the favorite perp right now. He would be -300 in my book if you are a gambler.

He seemed pretty confident that next presser Thursday early on Tues. I think they will have some breaking news.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks this, thank you.

OK, I'm just gonna put this out there. I think the flatbed truck is the distraction. Almost an hour ago this notification was sent out to LE Possible missing elderly woman near Tanque Verde Rd, Tucson AZ | CrimeRadar

I posted pictures for reference. Forgive me if this is not allowed on this thread but I wanted to put it out there. Now there may just be another 80-year-old woman Missing from the same county. IMO I think this is quite a coincidence.
My guess would be this might turn out to be someone with dementia who has wandered off. I hope she's found soon.

My brain went down that whole scenario last night when I couldn't sleep lol. I was thinking maybe she let the dog out and a wild animal attacked 😳 But then I was like nope, animals don't care about removing cameras. Yall...the insomnia thoughts can be crazy 😂
There has been reports of black bears in the area 😳, but yeah, a bear wouldn’t smash or remove all the cameras. 😆

Although—this neighbor did say the bear “got close enough to trip over a light and the camera.”:

“Mary Wombat, 65, who has lived in the neighborhood for 50 years, said her security camera captured a black bear near her house three times. One of the times, it was just after sunrise. For the other two, she said, the bear got close enough to trip over a light and the camera.”

<modsnip> ... I stopped trusting MSM for information a long time ago.
Did you read the article? This Friedman guy was contacting people while the Grammys were on. That was Sunday night and here we are Wednesday. It’s so curious where he found out the son in law dropped her off then “checked” on her.
Did SG get this info out to him, or someone close to her? Who would it have been on Sunday?
I was trying to think of a logical reason that the SIL would check on his MIL after she had been dropped off. The only thing that I can think of is the family is somehow alerted if NG's pacemaker is not syncing. If this were the case, though, he would have known that his MIL was missing.

That being said, I can think of no other reason for him to return to the house. Plus, the only reason for him to admit it is if he thought that his return was captured on her Nest front door bell. Surely, his wife would find it strange that he went out in the middle of the night to check on his MIL unless she asked him to so do.

I wish that we knew what time he actually returned to check on her or if this is even an accurate account.

How many other missing elderly women are there in Tucson??
we do get silver alerts here....we have a large elderly population here, snowbirds, etc. IMO likely not related.

Removing the septic TANK would require a backhoe. But I am a woman in my late 60's and would have no difficulty unbolting (with a drill) and then lifting the septic tank lids off.

We had people out twice this summer who did it - once to empty the tanks and another time because when the tanks were emptied, they accidentally undid the zip ties holding the floats up so the floats later dropped down into the tank and our septic tank alarm went off.

Early on in this case I would've asked if any pharmacies had received a request for specific meds to be filled for Nancy ... but sadly I think LE know the answer to that by now. :(
And why would a kidnapper care about the medical needs of their victim ?
Just wondered as LE seemed to be holding onto hope she's alive-- but she has to have those meds, so ...

Also felt as if the sheriff in the presser was dancing around what he could and couldn't say, iykwim ?

Doesn't seem that much of a coincidence in Tucson AZ

So I guess that also rules out: Mountain Lions, Bobcats, Gila Monsters, Rattlesnakes, Scorpions.....I just can't see any of them smashing and grabbing cameras, but bears could have the dexterity...wait a minute, raccoons could smash and grab those cameras! 🤣

Here I go again…the sheriff said Thursday is when the next press conference will be, but why? Is something coming together behind the scenes that will be announced Thursday? If there isn’t any new information that’s of real importance, why have it? Does anyone else think this?
I think you're probably right.

Any word or detail on the story that NG said something very rushed and out of character for her to the neighbor friend when last contacted?

I’m not sure if he did go back to check on her. It was someone from her church who alerted the family.
