I feel like whoever is sending this stuff may have already f'd up, they are just giving them more ropeInteresting that the perp used the news agency's contact form and didn't send it to an active email address. I suppose that might add an extra layer of protection because if the form isn't designed well then putting in a fake return email would be plausible. Which would mean any tracing would be heavily IP dependent, and those are easier to divert and spoof from what've read. If a basic contact form it would also explain no proof of life attachments (data from images or videos can be removed in most publishing software applications).
