AZ Nancy Guthrie, 84, (mother of TODAY Show host Savannah Guthrie) missing - last seen in the Catalina foothills area on Jan 31, 2026

You are SO right! I absolutely hate it when a news story focuses on skin color or nationality. Many media outlets have replaced objective reporting with "moral clarity" journalism. When media outlets focus heavily on race or nationality to drive engagement it can have negative impacts on a criminal investigation. Keep in mind, being released does not necessarily mean "cleared."
I’ve seen all sorts of nonsense on social media stating that it’s a “Mexican man” (which could be right or wrong) but IMO you can’t even tell if the person is male or female even, so how can you tell nationality through a mask?

They use a masked paramilitary force to descend on every other Hispanic person in this country so I can’t say I’m incredibly surprised
It WAS a masked paramilitary that descended on Nancy G’s house!

Calling in a tip doesn't mean the FBI should run out and arrest someone. It's called INVESTIGATE.
They didn’t arrest anyone.

We might see an increase in people wearing sunglasses for the next few days
Some guy's family was in the car, some kid was handcuffed in his house after LE knocked down their door.

I understand these things happen in investigations - the world is not perfect - that is not the issue as much as the world was in a frenzy to watch it and dig up dirt while LE is working the case.

It's like someone who ordered pizza delivered to NG's house yesterday. It's gross and not funny.

I'm having an existential moment as a true-crimer. Not gonna lie. This is not who I want to be.

So, the "why" is still unanswered. If the object was to murder an 84 yr old, it would seem it would have happened in her home. Robbery? Nothing taken. Doubtful it has anything to do with SG or the Olympics.

Why take her? Ransom would be the foremost answer. Seems ransom is closer to being legit reason, but it's not been paid. Now what?
My leading theory

my leading theory is still that they wanted her to withdraw or transfer a large amount of money and were ignorant of her medication needs and she died while in their possession.

Such a wild pendulum swing here from “the dude police say isn’t a suspect is totally the guy that did it!” to “They only went off of his eyes???”

We have no idea what police have or don’t have, and breathless speculation is not fact.

Hi @m00c0w

Long time no see.

As usual, you are on the money. We are so far into fanfic here, driven by irresponsible coverage IMO.

I wasn't aware of the info that it was Savannah's church service that Nancy was going to be watching until now. Good Shepherd digital was at 11 a.m. EST which makes that 9 a.m. MST.

Now I understand why people were believing the alleged hour search by the family, before calling LE, because of the timing.

If it was a group of ladies that were to be watching together it is not necessarily a red flag that they would have waited until after church services and mingling before contacting family to check on Nancy.

All I can say if the Police looked at my internet history right now, I think I'd probably be called in for questioning!

LE follow leads and not all are correct -that's part of the hard work they do. But the public doesn't to be there for every second of it.

I'm questioning my own habits of following cases, tbh. Yesterday was cringe, yet I watched. WHY?

Not comfortable today.
Sensationalism......we all fall for it and later are ashamed, at least, some of us. JMO

In the end, his mother-in-law believed in his innocence. 😁
But she also answered a question about his name. She didn't mean harm, but that was cringe.

Yeah there’s just not enough information for the general public to make an ID.

If it’s a successful tip it’s going to have to come from someone that knows the person intimately.

And maybe that tipster that called in did have a close relationship with the person detained. Could just show how hard it’s going to be to ID this guy

Her pacemaker app was disconnected from her phone at 2:28am. That has been determined by investigators.

It doesn't clear the family but she made it home.

I don't think we should assume she was home at 2:28am. It is common for pacemakers to transmit data only once per day and usually in the middle of the night according to this pacemaker monitoring company: Remote Monitoring: Frequently Asked Questions - PaceMate®

So the pacemaker monitor reported that it was not able to connect at 2:28 am because that's the standard time each night that the monitor tries to connect with the pacemaker. She could have been gone much earlier.

I'm feeling that remorse today too Inthedetails.

Its a really uncomfortable feeling. The click and refresh, click and refresh. I think regardless what comes in the next few days, I'm going to step away regularly and just let the investigation unfold and not be so caught up in each step. And remember the real families living this, not reading about it or watching videos about it.

It made me think of an Elaine quote from Seinfeld, I think she said it to a tv exec - "Russell, you're part of the problem". I feel like that today :(

IMO no it wasn’t a paramilitary person. No paramilitary weapons, no professional precision, no evidence of someone highly trained….and true paramilitary types don’t mess with flowers IMO

Maybe it was a bit of a reach but if they pinged his phone or car and saw his movement towards the southern border it might have triggered them to take action.
He lives in that area 🤦‍♂️. 'Uh oh, that guy someone said had too pretty of eyes for a delivery driver just turned south!"

He looks Hispanic to me. Nothing wrong with stating that IMO.

Interesting. That would explain why it took so long to send any ransom demand (if it was the same people, ie not the hoaxer one) - it was Plan B.

Yeah, sounds like his phone number was scooped up in a tower dump or geofence warrant and he checked several boxes that made him a worthy line of inquiry.
Sounds like they are getting warmer!

Understandable and respectful. iMO a lot of this going into circles over male or female or seeing things or not seeing things…fills time but IMO I’m not sure if it’s worth it
