I have been busy all day (down here in Oz), so am now hopelessly behind, and too tired to bother to catch up. Anyway it seems like nothing has changed. But I just thought I'd comment on how astonished I am that noone seems one bit surprised about all the security apparently needed in the US. I don't believe I even know one person who even has a doorbell thingy! Ladies and gentlemen, may I welcome you to Australia, the land of the free and (fairly) safe! (and no, I'm not telling you my address :D)

I'm posting this for those who may have missed it. Brian Entin is speaking with a retired FBI agent—lots of good information/explanation about the case.

"Residents living near her home, specifically from her home moving north to the top of Ina Road, going west as far as La Cholla Boulevard, moving south to River Road, and going west to the end of Roller Coaster Road, are asked to review footage from specific nights"

Looks like they got a suspicious ip address, perhaps from a burner phone?

All the items the suspect was wearing appeared to come from Walmart - the backpack, the jacket and the hip holster. They all looked pretty new to me. So was the suspect also wearing other new items like the shoes and the pants? He wore at least one other pair of gloves under the nitrile gloves so maybe this guy is also wearing something under the jacket and the pants, too to throw off any attempts to identify his build; to make him look stocky instead of slim. Maybe he bought everything new because his regular clothes would be more in keeping with his age, trends he follows, musical tastes and his style. Maybe he doesn't normally wear a $24 jacket from Walmart.

I think buying cheap items at Walmart was a very smart move. Especially if he paid in cash, in another city, or shoplifted them. Imagine if he had been filmed with a high quality professional holster and an extremely high quality backpack from a top of the line outfitter? He could have been traced very quickly. The only better thing he could have done is use stuff from a Goodwill or garage sale.

I do think the gun in the holster would be a better avenue to explore. Unless it is stolen or acquired from illegal sales and untraceable. Based on the curving shape of the butt, I think it is a Ruger SR22. Possibly a Ruger American Compact, 9mm.

With respect, I'm sharing my view on images and articles about NG's grandchildren. SG and her husband are wisely shielding their children from the turmoil and media circus in Tucson. AG and her husband are local, but they're limiting their child's exposure as best they can. Beyond privacy concerns, reporting on the grandkids or their whereabouts impacts their security. Nancy may have been targeted because of SG's celebrity or resources. Whoever kidnapped Nancy or someone inspired by this crime could target a grandchild.

I want to thank you all for the responsible discussions of charged topics like this crime. The ground rules ensure WS is victim-friendly. Discussions here are driven by responsible mainstream media reporting, which make participating worthwhile and productive. With crimes that generate wide public interest like this one, the benefits of the TOS are readily apparent. Reliance on responsible media outlets means our discussions extend grace and space to Nancy's grandchildren. I appreciate that and just wanted to say so. Good night.

Usually I would agree that buying cheap items would make it harder to track. However, when it comes to Walmart that changes things. Walmart has a very strong inventory system as well as security cameras and is known for cooperating with LE. With multiple items purchased, likely, within a small timeframe this could be their downfall. Even if the suspect shoplifted the items, if law enforcement contacts Walmart they can do an inventory count on those specific SKU’s to see if a particular store is missing those 3 items. If they are then they can review the footage for the aisles in question.

Is this a lot of work….Yes! However, it is far more likely than some of the random tips they may be chasing down and the FBI has the resources to do it.

Another major development Saturday: investigators say they're now leaning away from any relatives of the Guthrie family as suspects but not officially ruling anyone out until the case is solved.

Leininger's message to Tucson residents: keep an open mind, and report anything that appeared out of the ordinary in recent weeks.

“You would be surprised how many times people have information but they don’t think it's important enough to report it and it runs out to be incredibly important to solving the case,” Leininger said.

A sheriff's deputy was stationed in the driveway of Guthrie's home Saturday, and the Tucson community continues to show support for the Guthrie family, many buying yellow flowers for Nancy and putting their messages and prayers on a banner outside her house.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Saturday that a man briefly detained in the Nancy Guthrie case Friday “was our person of interest.”

Nanos described the man in an interview with Fox News as cooperative — but did not elaborate on what he meant by the “person of interest” designation or whether the individual was believed to have any direct connection to Guthrie’s disappearance.

The man was later released. He is believed to own a gray Range Rover that authorities searched and towed as part of the investigation.

It’s actually not that difficult to identify patterns with data. It can be done pretty quickly with basic analytics tools, and lightning fast with AI. We do various analyses in my work, and AI has really sped things up + increased accuracy. I suspect LE should already be going this route…

The items may have been purchased at 'different times', over months / years. From some of his known actions, he doesn't seem like a 'methodical' person. The question 'what if?' doesn't come into his thinking i.e. the door bell security camera, trying to cover with twigs etc.

This is a shame.

If this crime was based on jealousy/rage/resentment toward SG, then it's mission (almost) accomplishment.

One reason among many I'd love to join you in Australia.

Security cameras are not ubiquitous where I live, but the cheapness of the technology means it is becoming more common in spite of low incidence of crime. None of my friends or family have security systems or doorbell cameras. My mother, living independently in her 90s, would never allow us to monitor her. We all have locks on the door. That's it. I can't imagine putting cameras inside my house or using a smart speaker. Babycams only became common after my kids were teens. The idea that parents use one past infancy bothers me. The child has a right to privacy. Much like NG, we got an inexpensive trail camera during the Covid lockdown so we could watch the birds and wildlife.

I don't think people appreciate the ramifications of pervasive surveillance in public spaces and the potential for misuse. The federal government has deployed facial recognition technology, and agents are telling citizens they're building a database of dissidents. Nest maintained it didn't record activity unless the user subscribed. Because of this crime, we've learned it records anyway. The user can't access the recordings without subscribing but obviously the company can. Someone posted here that she'd let her doorbell camera subscription lapse. Months later, she renewed it and all the video from the period it supposedly was not recording popped up.

This entire investigation seems to be so hapless. I can't imagine how frustrated Savannah must be. It feels to me like her sister and brother in law must have something to do with this, based partly on how they behaved immediately after it happened, and partly on his gambling debts, as well as him being the last one to see her alive. Does anyone know---are they staying nearby? I read that they left their house last week.

Search for Savannah Guthrie's Abducted Mom Nancy Could Take 'Years,' Local Sheriff Says

This is a My Opinion Only statement….

I am sorely disappointed and disgusted with this sheriffs department. If it takes years it is only because they have so contaminated the crime scene and forensics that it may never be solved. They did everything you could do wrong from the start. Now they are in some kind of petty turf war with the FBI. The sheriff doesn’t seem to have the intestinal fortitude to look at this case and see that it is far far out of his league. I hope it isn’t too late for Nancy.

This is all my own opinion and speculation based only upon reading and watching TV coverage.

Four hours ago:

Investigators say:
  • they are leaning away from looking into the man whose home was searched overnight as a suspect,
  • away from a man named Carlos, who was stopped in a car earlier this week,
  • and away from any relatives of Guthrie as suspects, the sources said.
Well, that's what they SAY.

But it may not be the case! Who knows what they're really doing?!
