I never had a strong opinion one way or another about if this family was directly involved (which per the last I'd seen is not the case), but a total stranger -- as in, someone who'd never interacted with Nancy OR any of her kids etc who also isn't family -- showing up to kidnap and possibly physically harm an 84 year old woman is SO confusing. And I just really don't see this as something that started with an intended theft that just randomly turned into not even an attack or murder where the victim is left in the home, but a kidnapping where the victim is unaccounted for for weeks. Again: I could absolutely be wrong, it's just really hard to wrap my head around.
I suppose it's possible it's someone totally random who just knew she had a famous daughter and...I guess, either wanted attention from/hated said daughter for some reason, or if somehow some of the ransom notes ARE real and they thought this would be a good way to get some cash (doesn't seem like that latter option's worked out well for them thus far, though), I could see how it COULD be someone with zero connection to the family or NG directly. This just still seems like SUCH a wild scenario to me. (Goodness knows plenty of crazy things happen every day, so I'm not saying there's no way -- and certainly the famous-person element of this story makes this scenario more possible than if NG had no publicly known relatives -- but then we're dealing with something/someone truly bizarre and likely mentally ill. In which case I'd question how long this person could manage to not mess up or divulge something or spin further out of control, or arouse suspicions amongst whoever else is in their life.)
I think I'm inclined to believe it's at least someone who knew the family/Nancy in some way. A disturbed neighbor who was mad about something real or imagined; a creepy neighbor who was stalking NG for some reason; a friend of a relative who's addicted to drugs or otherwise not in full control of their mental faculties and was making unreasonable choices; someone who'd worked in the house or for someone in their family and thought they'd been wronged/not properly compensated? NG may not have even necessarily known this person was unhappy with her, if so.
It's just such a very strange case. I do worry that something was missed early on that is going to make this very hard to solve or at least prosecute. I hope I'm wrong on that.
