Not satisfied by the Sheriff’s explanation of the elder abuse business card. I think that’s a clear investigative angle. Nancy appears to be alone and unprotected in that secluded home. I don’t buy it.

IMO, and respectfully, I think it's challenging to make a case for elder abuse when the elder is in their right mind, owns their home, is financially self-sufficient (assumed) and has in home help several days a week. Several people have assumed that NG was well off but we don't know for sure. Without or without long term care insurance, in home care is VERY expensive. VERY. SG may have been paying for it to support her mother's stated wishes. She seems to love her Mom very much, and she can afford to do that. But people have every right to remain in their home if they want to.

It's highly unusual that a judge is going to order a conservatorship and force someone out of their home if they are in their right mind and able to do well with help provided. Cameras may have been one of the concessions Savannah requested to delay that difficult discussion.

I’m glad they are looking at everything. I didn’t think much of gloves found along the roadway( there must be a huge number of unrelated ones), but I do understand chasing down all leads.

The only priority of law enforcement - its mandate even - is to locate and prosecute those who have broken the law. They may empathize with victims and victims' families, and even go out of their way to be sensitive to their situation, but their technical procedures and protocols don't take those things into account. Sure, one of their goals overlaps with the family's goal of finding their loved one, but not for the same reasons.

How many times have we seen a family trying desperately to obtain information about their missing loved one from law enforcement only to be rebuffed, and in some cases, ignored altogether?

We should not ascribe altruistic, compassionate intentions/priorities to a government body that is, by design and by mandate, supposed to operate independently of those things.

With respect I'm wondering if it's your opinion that the only priority of law enforcement in a kidnapping case is locating and prosecuting the criminal vs. locating the victim or is there a source for this? I thought the priority was always locating the victim in a kidnapping case.

Except she wasn't secluded. There's neighbors around, they just aren't *thisclose* like many housing areas are in the city. She has family nearby. And It's pretty easy to call the case manager listed on the card and get the details of why they were called out there and what the circumstances are.

Mods I hope it’s okay to say this. It is not a criticism of anyone. I will report my post so that mods can view it, since I am often misunderstood.

I would like to hear more from the Guthrie family. Nothing scripted. Maybe raw anger that confirms rumors that authorities are not working together, maybe putting some fire under them.

Or, maybe they could give a statement, not scripted, of total confidence in where the investigation is headed and their support of authorities. It’s 21 days out and we have only seen scripted statements and the one video of Savannah expressing her belief that everyone has good in them.

I would like to believe Nancy is safe and alive.

We are eager for insight, but the family doesn't need to perform in public for our entertainment. They owe nothing more to the public than cooperation with LE.

The family released video clips early on to reach the kidnapper, the ransom note writer, and their mother and to plead for help from the public. The clips accomplished LE and the family's goals. But at tremendous cost to family members. Every twitch or tear, or lack of it, was dissected as implicating or exculpating family members. Their words themselves were parsed for possible hidden meanings.

The family statements came at tremendous costs to family members. AG, who is not a celebrity like her sister or hardened military like her brother, who is coping with a horrific nightmare, and who is parenting a young child, the subject of intense speculation that she is a murderer or enabling a spouse who is. The family was harassed night and day to the point they were forced to leave the comfort of their own home at a time when they needed that familiar refuge

If appropriate, I am certain the family will speak out again. Not because we'd appreciate insights into family dynamics or to attest to their agony but because LE or the family believe conveying a tailored message publicly at that time will be helpful to the investigation.

the issues with the sheriff started when he became sheriff. If you're local, you know of the issues, and if you've ever had to work with his dept in some capacity, you know the issues. It's been mentioned a few times in this very long thread and difficult to find now, and if I continue down this line of thought in trying to explain it further, I'll really derail the thread I'm sure . So I'll just add it's all IMO for all that. IMO no, I don't think someone is throwing Nanos under the bus or trying to. I think someone got lucky with what has happened and the response to it, IMO. I also don't know if this case would go any differently if someone else was in charge as sheriff. I think this would be a difficult case regardless,especially if you have no experience with a high profile case.

Yeah reading all the background locals posted is what got me thinking. Plus all the local LE types criticizing him mid investigation- made me wonder if the criticism might be the goal. Sounds like the sheriff has a lot of folks who feel that he has weakened local LE, and this could be another attempt to oust him. Might also explain why there is (presumably) little evidence to go on- someone who knows where the office has a weak link. But again, pure speculation on my part but it was the only idea I’ve had that I haven’t seen mentioned here so figured I would share in case it helped someone else’s processing of what is happening.

It's an elected, political office. The sheriffs position was achieved through public vote.

Do they not understand that it is the Sheriff’s prerogative to assemble a supportive team which those are obviously not.

Many in LE are entrenched I get it they need a job but to criticize other sworn officers on the job because they have less time is hollow.

These young folks can be brilliant computer whizzes, newly trained in the newest technology and procedures and in my community at least are recently out of active service with an energy and focus beyond the old guys.

More than anything it’s not the time to be back biting the Sheriff, imo.

I assume the "no backpack" image of the suspect is from the same night as the abduction due to general wording by LE.

However, I wondered about a hypothetical scenario. Is it possible that the “no backpack” video was actually recovered from a different night (say, January 11)?

If so, this implies that there was at least one prior abduction attempt. If this video is indeed from a different night, what caused them to abandon the plan? Was Ms. Guthrie not home that night? Were they scared off by something?

Apologies if I have missed LE confirmation that the “no backpack” video is from the same night as the abduction, which would negate this entire line of speculation.

I've been struck as well by how passive everyone is being about this. The sheriff, FBI, family, friends, neighbors all seem to lack any kind of urgency about this poor missing 84 year old lady. No appeals from family or friends, no neighborhood searches by the community, no press conference appeals. None of the typical activity you see when a missing person case is high profile.

The whole atmosphere is off. I think the resolution of this case is going to surprise a lot of people. IMO

The lack of neighborhood searches has been puzzling me since the beginning.

While everyone is bashing the sheriff and hoping that the FBI plays a bigger role, I gotta wonder how much state law enforcement is involved?
To the best of my knowledge, each state has their own police and criminal investigation division. Generally, this is the chain of command if local resources are not enough. In Texas, we have the Texas rangers and DPS Troopers. I'm sure AZ has something similar. Keep in mind that this is a "state case" first and foremost.

If and when the perp is caught it will be the State of AZ vs ______.
It won't be Pima County vs ______.
It won't be the United States vs __________, unless federal charges are filed.

Just wondering how much state resources are involved?

For someone 84, or for a child, it’s devastating. While it might be just routine for authorities, it is devastating to the victim.

I’ve seen no evidence or seen comments that there has been trespassing in the home, the site of the crime scene, by anyone.

Although not tresspasing, someone left an APS card in the front door. No one stopped or saw this. Who is to say there weren't tresspassers if this can happen?

The front door might have been processed first for all we know.
LE may have placed the card on the door for the investigator.
Someone mentioned that LE let a delivery guy through the tape to deliver a package. People were not free to recklessly roam all over that crime scene. The house was taped off.

Totally disagree with this. They WERE allowed to walk up to the door and leave the amazon package and the card. The media was there, they saw it, it was after that, that some of the media decided to walk up there themselves and take photos/videos. The house was released to the family on the Monday after her disappearance, Feb 2nd.

Does it show the person actually walk up to the door? I wasn't aware of this. I just was suggesting what could be a possibility.

That would mean LE had finished processing that scene Monday morning around 8:00 a.m. - If they worked overnight.

I think the issue is that they released the scene too quickly. And that people were indeed allowed to recklessly roam to the front door. Amazon guy, APS lady... numerous media organizations got video and pics from the front door. Your original post replying to another poster, implied that they were not allowed to do that.

The house/scene was closed off 2 times after the amazon/aps/media and who knows who else was allowed on the property.
