They haven’t anything definitive about whether it’s real. It offered two details about the crime scene. One of them wouldn’t have been known to outsiders (location of Apple Watch). The other (rear floodlights “destroyed’) may not have been, either. But no proof of life that we know of. (Source: Levin talking to Cuomo on Newsnation.)
My guess is that it was sent by the perpetrator(s). Can think of a few explanations for the absence of proof of life.
