AZ Nancy Guthrie (mother of TODAY Show host Savannah Guthrie) missing - last seen in the Catalina foothills area on Jan 31, 2026

I wonder whether the sheriff meant that they thought she was actually asleep when she was abducted/taken, or merely that she was taken/abducted at a time when she might reasonably be expected to be sleeping.

Or maybe the reporting is like the game of "telephone," and the story has changed in the telling.

JJ Them not being able to State what she was wearing leads to why they believe taken in the middle of the night while she was sleeping otherwise I would imagine they would state what she had on when she was dropped off. So I guess that's there between 1 and 4:00 AM theory.

How does they sync up with her taken by force when she was asleep in her bed?
Maybe she woke up to noise, went to get out of bed ( put glasses on, find/reach for her cane etc) and person(s) grabbed her out of the bed etc. Did they find her glasses?

I don't think there is a large amount of blood in the home or anything too obviously disturbed based on this:

"Family members looked for Guthrie for about an hour before calling the Pima County Sheriff's Department, according to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos."

If family was searching in the home and surrounding area for an hour before calling police, they would have seen a large amount of blood or other obvious evidence of a homicide and called police sooner than an hour after arriving.

IMO, the sheriff's office who is calling this a crime scene has other evidence to call it a crime scene, whether that be video evidence, fingerprints, or something else that isn't as obvious as large pools of blood would be.

JMO!
As usual, in early stages of a case, we are missing a lot of information. But if initially, nothing looked askew to the family, even if they just saw her cane, that would have caused them to look around for her at her residence for a while. After all, who would expect her to go missing without it?

This is what I am finding confusing. I was assuming that because the family waited to call police, there mustn't have been anything significantly out of place immediately indicating something nefarious had happened. Yet now they are saying the house was in some sort of disarray.

It sounds contradicting to me, nothing at all against the family, just trying to understand what the police walked in to

More than know if money was withdrawn, they should have video evidence of who withdrew the money if this happened. If they only see Nancy in the recording, they'll be looking for signs of distress IMO. If they see a perpetrator's face, then they need to identify them, prompting the request for local camera footage. I would guess it will be dash cam footage that is most helpful but then again all they need is one ring camera (or similar) with a good view of the road to see who drives past

IMO
they may not need "signs of distress" if it is as at some weird hour she would not be put and about at all

Still catching up (had to go volunteer with some kitties), but abducted while sleeping + signs of harm actually kind of go with what I originally thought. The kids searched before calling the cops because there was nothing to indicate foul play in the open.

If I injured a sleeping elderly woman in bed and got blood on the bedding, I would definitely throw a blanket over the evidence, aka not immediately visible.

Possibly LE heard something in reviewing security footage that led them to believe she was harmed? That wouldn’t have been evident to family initially… MOO. Speculating here…

Someone quoted above that the house was in some sort of disarray, that's what I was confused about

I just really don't get the whole taking her from her home thing.
They may have forced her to go to an ATM with them?

But I'm sure LE would know that by now, if so...
If it was a robbery and she interrupted, they could tie her up/restrain her and finish what they came for or take her to try to get her to go to ATMs, or kill her and leave her body there.
yes... 😞
If it were for ransom I would have expected a ransom demand by now so I am sort of ruling that out. If they took her to try to get more money from her via bank or credit cards, why not just let her go somewhere, drop her off on a random street corner?

I am really worried she has met her end and that her body has been hidden God only knows where
Me too....because she may have known her attacker?

Maybe they found some sort of binding? Something that could be used to restrain her somehow
Hope she is found safe and soon but doesn’t feel like she will be found safe :( (really don’t like typing those last few words)

DNA samples. Vomit. Really hoping this isn't SA.

If it was a breakin, she may have heard the noise and called out. The perpetrators heard her and went to her room. Perhaps she recognized whoever it was and they took her so they wouldn't be identiified. Could be they emptied out her purse , found nothing and threw it to the side.
There was a case in Oregon many years ago where an older woman was taken from her home. Almost the same circumstances. She was later found in the trunk of an unknown car parked in an unknown apt complex. After many weeks, some of the residents complained, called police and she was found deceased, of course. But also in the car was a bag of cookies. ?! Don't know if it was ever resolved.

Last night the sheriff was talking about how often calls like this come in, and spoke about how unusual it was that they’d have homicide detectives involved.

He cryptically mentioned the scene indicating that something nefarious may have happened, so there’s just got to be something there telling them that (ransacked, blood, etc).
if there is no camera footage of an intruder, her leaving the house between 1-4 a.m. has to be odd

Brief comments by former FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer, who often appears on true crime discussions.

t would be Highly unusual to take her. If it were a targeted kidnapping, why no ransom demand? Very unusual for an abductor of someone this age to wait this long to ask for ransom,” she wrote. “Who would benefit from Nancy’s demise, if she is found deceased?”

Extremely sad situation. And to expand, the fact that our older adults so beloved by their families can still fall prey to the world around them. I hope and pray that Nancy will be found alive Godspeed, and brought home to her loved ones.

Sadly that may be the case. Otherwise they would have a team on the ground and possibly drones. Because of Savannah I think they would continue to search.
The sheriff during the presser this morning made it pretty clear that they have hope she's alive. He was begging for information so that this doesn't have a grim and tragic ending.

That being said, I am of the opinion they found enough blood evidence to call a homicide team at some point.

Unless the timing was right after she was dropped off, and someone rang the doorbell. She might think that it was her friend needing to say something to her. I could see myself automatically opening the door in a situation like this. I would not open the door in other situations. I just hope that they have lots of security cameras, inside and out, especially since the mother lives alone in a secluded place.

Although it is a gated, secure neighborhood, there are always ways to get into the community. If Mom has hired help, they may come in on a daily basis. Who knows if someone has a badge of hers or a sticker on their vehicle...That's how we can get into our subdivision. Visitors stop at the guard shack.

I just hope that she is found soon. I also suspect that it is someone that she knows or it is an associate of someone she knows.

JMO.

Brian Entin on his way…Purse, ID, phone left in house, homicide team involved…search team “taking a rest”…
I love Brian Entin he is a class act.

Nancy is not capable of leaving the house on her own, there's no way she's physically able to get up and leave.
Yet she was in her home by herself?
