NBC ending Leno's nightly prime-time show

Source: O'Brien's staff is sticking point in talks

LOS ANGELES—The sticking point in Conan O'Brien's complex exit negotiations with NBC involves his TV staff, not Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog, a person familiar with the talks said Tuesday.
Although discussions also focused on whether NBC would keep the rights to familiar O'Brien comedy bits including Triumph, O'Brien's focus was ensuring severance deals for his "Tonight" staff and crew, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the talks were intended to be private.

O'Brien is "dug in on that," the person said.

So far, negotiations have yielded a proposed deal that could pay O'Brien more than $30 million for leaving NBC and "The Tonight Show," allowing Jay Leno to return to late night from his soon-to-be canceled 10 p.m. EST show.

The proposal also would allow O'Brien, who would exit "Tonight" less than a year after taking over from Leno, to start work on a competing network as early as fall. But he would be barred from making NBC the butt of jokes.

O'Brien asked to be released from his contract, which has about two-and-a-half years left, after rejecting NBC's plan to push him and "Tonight" to 12:05 a.m. EST to make way for a half-hour show with Leno at 11:35 p.m.

The network, hit by poor ratings for its prime-time experiment, "The Jay Leno Show," and for O'Brien's "Tonight," was trying to keep both comedians on board.

O'Brien has seen his viewership jump in recent days. His Monday night Nielsen Co. rating, according to preliminary figures, was up 67 percent in total viewers over the previous fourth quarter average and up 80 percent among advertiser-favored young adults.

Ratings for Leno in the same window, however, remained flat.

This is how you behave when you care about other people. Maybe Jay should follow Conan's example and try thinking about others for a change.

Just in case anyone is still confused about what's going on, here is a little help from a Chinese animation. Haha.

I saw the chinese "explanation" on Conan last night. It is the most hilarious thing I have ever seen. NBC should hire the Chinese to do the comedy for Leno.

NBC's handling of the Jay Leno-Conan O'Brien succession provides lessons in what not to do, management watchers say.
NBC made two critical missteps six years ago when the network signed Mr. O'Brien to replace Mr. Leno in 2009, say management consultants. It's a bad idea to promise someone a promotion in order to retain him, they say, and so is naming a successor too far in advance.
The moves came back to bite NBC this month, and offer a cautionary tale for managers in other industries.
Lesson No. 1: "Never try to staff an organization just to block the career options that follow from a talent surplus," says Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, a professor at Yale's School of Management, via email. n 2004, NBC announced Mr. O'Brien would succeed Mr. Leno atop "The Tonight Show" in 2009. Mr. O'Brien's contract was set to expire, and NBC risked losing him to CBS or ABC. The deal meant that Mr. Leno's tenure would last 17 years, much shorter than predecessor Johnny Carson's 30-year run. By 2009, "Leno was not ready to go and his audience was not ready to let him go," Mr. Sonnenfeld says. more at link:http://online.wsj.com/article/SB100...43347580222.html?mod=rss_Today's_Most_Popular

The decision to let O'Brien walk apparently came down to who was cheaper to let go.

Leno has an ironclad, "brilliantly written" agreement that guarantees his production company a staggering $150 million if NBC Universal axes his flailing primetime show, an insider said.

That deal was news to O'Brien until Monday night, when Leno referred to it in his monologue.

O'Brien's last show could be Friday, and until any pact with NBC is signed, he's free to keep insulting the network on the air.

Last night, he couldn't resist, saying the network "is headed downhill faster than a fat guy chasing a runaway cheese wheel."

Conan was great tonight! Excellent performance by Joss Stone. His guests were Adam Sandler & Joel McHale (The Soup) .. Extremely funny show tonight:) & lots of digs at NBC. I think it's great, all the jabs.

Still watching here in Mountain Time. Great so far! Adam Sandlar was HILLARIOUS! His song to get Conan to cry, so he doesn't go on a shooting rampage. And his acronym for NBC. Nothing But Cu***. Hahahaha.

I missed it last night. I went to youtube.com but wasn't able to find any clips. Any idea where I might find some?

Thanks.

Conan O'Brien Plays Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction," Costs NBC $1.5 Million

That Conan O'Brien's a crafty one. Even though he’s been given a severance deal to the tune of $32 million big ones from the peacock network, I just don’t think that the comedian is smiling about being booted from his not even one-year old Tonight Show so prematurely. So what is he doing to cope with the pain of being ousted from the spot that Carson used to occupy? He’s sticking it to NBC where it hurts, below the belt. In the pockets to be exact.

Anyone tuning into The Tonight Show last night saw the host taking part in a one-minute spending spree by standing next to a Bugatti (an expensive-a$$ vehicle to say the least) that he bought with some of his walk-away money and blasting the sounds of The Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction.” The problem with that is that playing Jagger and the boys cost the network a pretty penny in royalty fees, around $1.5 million actually, according to The Huffington Post.

NBC: Conan O'Brien reaches deal to exit `Tonight'; deal includes severance for staff

Conan O'Brien bid NBC good riddance Thursday in a $45 million deal for his exit from "The Tonight Show," but his immediate future in television remains a question mark.

[snip]

Under the deal, O'Brien will get more than $33 million, NBC said. The rest will go to his 200-strong staff in severance.

What happens next for O'Brien?

"We don't know," his manager, Gavin Polone, said Thursday. "While we have had expressions of interest, we have not had any substantive conversations with anybody."

Ideally, said Polone, O'Brien "wants to get back on the air, doing the show he's doing now, as soon as possible."

Well, let's hope he remains professional, because after all, he is still getting paid by NBC. I would lose all respect for him if he does something inappropriate, and I think he has been teetering on the edge of that all week. If he wants to get hired by someone else, he cannot step over the line. I do not feel sorry for Conan, he is being compensated very well. As far as the remark about Leno, don't think he will "tank"- he was the king of late night when HE had the Tonight Show. IMO here is the bottom line: As with any job, if you don't do well, you get fired. Conan basically was fired. Leno was on top and had high ratings when he was host of the Tonight Show, and that is the only reason that they are keeping him around, even though his 10pm show "tanked". They are basically giving him one more chance. Conan, even when he had the Late Show, was consistantly in 3rd place in the ratings, behind Leno and Letterman. He was NOT a commodity like Leno and that is why NBC did not try to keep him. It truly was a numbers game and Conan lost. I watch his show and which him well, but frankly sometimes his humor was strained and he was not as personable as Leno.
I have a feeling Conan is going to go out with a bang tonight unless NBC has put so many stipulations in the severance contract.

Hopefully, he'll be back on the air soon working for people that appreciate him.

I hope Leno tanks.

I don't have statistics but I don't think that Leno's numbers were that great either. When he started the Tonight Show he was given time to build up an audience. Conan hasn't been afforded that. It's just a matter of personal taste as to whose humor you prefer. I won't say I never laughed at anything Jay Leno had on his show. I just don't like the way he's behaved.

For anyone that missed Conan last night, this segment is a MUST SEE! It's Robin Williams' Irish jig, and it's absolutely fantastic.

Thanks for that I4G! LOLOL. I wonder if tonight's farewell will be on youtube tomorrow...I can't stay up that late!

I have never taped a Late Night show but I am taping Conan tonight. I am going to pour myself a nightcap and sit back and enjoy the shenanigans.

Dear Internet;) ,

Right now, as my favorite late night t.v. host starts his final show on the network where he got his start, I'm bummed. I'm looking forward to Will Ferrell and Tom Hanks but after tonight, I won't be watching NBC nearly as much as I do now. In a way, I guess I'm kind of sad to be saying good-bye to NBC, myself. I can't wait for Conan's new show with whichever network is lucky enough to have him. Thanks for the laughs, CoCo.

Like Stiller said, it wasn't very green of NBC to build that monstrosity of a studio for NOTHIN'. So much for "Green Week" NBC! :thumb: idiots!

Kudos to Conan... he is ending his stint on a classy note by voicing appreciation to NBC, given that he has worked with them for 20 years. Way to go Conan!

Ok, the silliness of Will Ferrel isn't in the classy range but sure is in the comedic way that Conan is famous for LMAO!!!!!!!!!

OMG... is that Beck and one of the ZZTop dudes playing with Conan and the rest of the band?

ETA: woohoo I need more cowbell, baby... Will's rocking the cowbell!
