NBC ending Leno's nightly prime-time show

I'm just now watching the show, here in Mountain Time. So I just understood your "Dear Internet" reference, Tizzle. Hahahaha.

And I haven't seen it yet, but my east-coast Facebook friends have been buzzing with it, so I know about his speech. And I have to say that Conan is a very classy, very respectable individual. So until we see you again Conan, we will miss you! Wishing only for good things in the future for Conan, and abysmal ratings for Leno. ;)

Ok, the silliness of Will Ferrel isn't in the classy range but sure is in the comedic way that Conan is famous for LMAO!!!!!!!!!

OMG... is that Beck and one of the ZZTop dudes playing with Conan and the rest of the band?

ETA: woohoo I need more cowbell, baby... Will's rocking the cowbell!

Yes to Beck and ZZ Top dude/Billy Gibbons. Also Ben Harper. It was good stuff. Conan's speech was perfection. When the show started I could see his eyes looked a little puffy and I thought I could hear his voice crack but I wasn't sure. Then the speech at the end of the show came and I knew I was right. It was a tough day today for Conan and his staff. CoCo's grace is admirable because I'm still screamin' 'BOOOOOOOOO NBC!' I'm overly bitter about this :). LOL

I admire Conan even more after this. His class is very much on the same level as Carson's. He already has hit the ground running. Buh-bye Jay:wave: Buh-bye Zucker:wave: Buh-bye NBC:wave:Enjoy the sinking ship!

ETA: LOL Idaho ;)

I really hope Conan's theme song stays the same for his new show. It would be a shame if he didn't keep it and I know NBC doesn't own the rights to it, so I'm hoping. But I'm having trouble imagining that a different network is going to pick up the theme song, too. Anyway, let's hope. Fingers crossed!

O’Brien’s Last Goodnight

Before ending the show with a song, Conan said the following from his desk:

“Before we end this rodeo, a few things need to be said. There has been a lot of speculation in the press about what I legally can and can’t say about NBC. To set the record straight, tonight I am allowed to say anything I want. And what I want to say is this: between my time at Saturday Night Live, The Late Night Show, and my brief run here on The Tonight Show, I have worked with NBC for over twenty years. Yes, we have our differences right now and yes, we’re going to go our separate ways. But this company has been my home for most of my adult life. I am enormously proud of the work we have done together, and I want to thank NBC for making it all possible.

Walking away from The Tonight Show is the hardest thing I have ever had to do. Making this choice has been enormously difficult. This is the best job in the world, I absolutely love doing it, and I have the best staff and crew in the history of the medium. But despite this sense of loss, I really feel this should be a happy moment. Every comedian dreams of hosting The Tonight Show and, for seven months, I got to. I did it my way, with people I love, and I do not regret a second. I’ve had more good fortune than anyone I know and if our next gig is doing a show in a 7-11 parking lot, we’ll find a way to make it fun.

And finally, I have to say something to our fans. The massive outpouring of support and passion from so many people has been overwhelming. The rallies, the signs, all the goofy, outrageous creativity on the internet, and the fact that people have traveled long distances and camped out all night in the pouring rain to be in our audience, made a sad situation joyous and inspirational.

To all the people watching, I can never thank you enough for your kindness to me and I’ll think about it for the rest of my life. All I ask of you is one thing: please don’t be cynical. I hate cynicism — it’s my least favorite quality and it doesn’t lead anywhere.

Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen. As proof, let’s make an amazing thing happen right now. Here to close out our show, are a few good friends, led by Mr. Will Ferrell

Conan O'Brien Says Goodbye to Tonight Show

Walking out to his final standing ovation as host, O'Brien notified the audience: "Ladies and gentlemen, we have exactly one hour to steal every single item in this studio."

"We've had a lot of fun being here these last seven months," he added. "But like everything in life, the fun has to come to an end a decade too early."

He also joked about what would become of his studio, saying it might become "a nice, quiet, peaceful place where the cast of Chuck can be alone with their thoughts" or be left cold and empty to serve as "The World's Largest Metaphor for NBC Programming."

To the tune of Cheap Trick's "Surrender," which also accompanied the cross-country intro of his first Tonight Show episode, he introduced a montage packed with a remarkable number of memorable moments for just seven months: His domino-style toppling of actual Domino's Pizza employees, a fake miracle for the benefit of tram-bound tourists, his sprint across Wrigley Field, one of many recent appearances by his hunky vampire assistant, Cody Devereux.

It ended with the encouraging words, "To Be Continued
."

it just dawned on me that NBC has resolved my sleep problems. So often I stay up way too late to watch Conan. It helped when he moved to the earlier time slot for the Tonight Show but a 12:30 bedtime with a 6am wake time catches up on you. Now, I have no reason to stay up later than 11pm (sorry, but local news is not why I stay up late). I look forward to having a well-rested glow!

HaHa:thumb:
What about when his new show starts in the fall, though? Maybe Fox will get him and the show will start at 11:00. That way, you could be in bed by Midnight, a whole half hour earlier. Also, it probably wouldn't help NBC & Jay's ratings much to have CoCo getting a head start every night. Not that they need any help failing because, IMO, they have already failed miserably and will most likely continue to do so.

I can't wait to watch Jay tank. I really, REALLY dislike him after this. ZERO respect. I can't stand lookin' at his big dumb stupid face! ;) I hope Jay realizes the damage he has done to his already tarnished image and I don't see him being able to fix it this time. This is the second time this has happened. Jay Leno is a backstabbing and greedy CHILD. Screw me once, shame on you. Screw me twice, shame on me. Like Letterman said, maybe it isn't Jay's fault, but he sure does find himself at the scene of the crime every time.

Unfortunately, I think the theme music will fall under NBC's "intellectual property" rights of audio, so it won't follow Conan given that Max Weinberg and another music writer took NBC's old Conan theme and retooled it under the NBC brand. Pretty much anything that was created for the show under the NBC brand during Conan's stint with the network is NBC's "intellectual property".

I can imagine that if Conan comes back to late night on another network, he will start fresh from new theme music to new characters and comedy skits. Of course, he could pull a page from David Letterman's book and pull off his old NBC skits and characters on another network by renaming them. NBC screamed "intellectual property, you can't use them" on things that David created while on NBC but wanted to use over on CBS, like the "Top Ten List", so David graciously gave NBC the middle finger by renaming it "Late Show Top Ten List" so he could use it on CBS. LoL

If Conan follows in Letterman's footsteps in dealing with "intellectual property", I hope he brings back Pierre Bernard's Recliner of Rage in some fashion... the mallomar rant is one of my all-time favorites. LoL And I don't know why it is... I just love it... I even have it in rotation on my iPod.

ETA: maybe they could rename it Pierre Bernard's Futon of Fury, and he can rant from a futon? LOL

I just had to snip this part of the speech. Conan is truly a class act.
I agree. I'm just bitter, LOL.

"Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen."
Unless you're Jay Leno. Apparently, you can be greedy and backstabbing and steal people's jobs and amazing things will still happen including 'getting exactly what you thought you were going to get'.

I don't like Conan and his style of humor. I am happy Leno is back. NBC should have never moved him to 10 and given his job to Conan to begin with.

Let's be realitstic here. You can work really hard and be kind, but amazing things might never happen to you.

I don't think that's quite the point...

Yes, you have to have the skills and the opportunities. But once you are in that position, being kind and working hard gives you a much better advantage (and just makes you a better person) than being a raging @$$ hole.

That is unless you are James Cameron... he's made an art form out of being a big ole arrogant raging a'hole... and gotten rich as all get out, being that way. LoL

Of course. No denying that there are plenty of people like that who have been quite successful.

Again, this isn't the issue here. There are plenty of fans of Jay Leno's humor, and I respect that. That's why there are so many options. We each prefer something different. But the issue here isn't about who likes who better. It's about what NBC did to Conan.

I sincerely doubt that being kind gives you an advantage. A lot of people get ahead in life exactly because they aren't kind.

Okay. Not going to argue here. You go ahead and be unkind because you can get ahead that way. And I will go ahead and follow Conan's advice, work hard, and be kind.

A "thanks" just didnt seem like enough for that one Idaho4Groenes; it beared repeating.

I did notice this week that many of the other NBC hosts (Lester Holt comes to mind) had glowing things to say about Conan. Everything from what a good person he was to his talent. Yet, no one said anything about Leno. Yes, you might say it's because Conan is leaving and Leno isn't, but they could have added something along the lines of "and I'm hoping that Leno does well, blah, blah, blah". No one did. It tells me that everything that I've heard about Leno is true.

Of course, but at least you are going through life with a positive attitude and not screwing everybody in your wake.

Well, fwiw, I have met Jay Leno, in a Banana Republic in Beverly Hills. This was when he was starting to get famous but had not gotten the Tonight Show. I think one of the reasons I like him so much is because he impressed me with how kind and down to earth he was. He was really a very nice person. He was so kind to the girls working at BR, he laughed and joked with them--he could have been an arrogant jerk, but he wasn't. Everyone is going to have their own opinion about Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien, but the bottom line is that it was NBC's decision, not Jay Leno's. I thought Conan was very humble and courteous last night, and went out with alot of class. I am sure this will not be the end for him, and wish him well, as I do Jay.
