Same here, Jewels -- exactly my feeling.
I don't know what to say without getting banned. Maybe later. So, was it a matter of just not proving it beyond a reasonable doubt??? Was it Shields closing, which is NOT EVIDENCE and cannot be used to weigh guilt or non-guilt?
His poor parents, and that poor woman sobbing in the courtroom & consoled by Stormy.
Now what happens to Phillip Maybrey? Does he get a bye?
Grrrrr.
I think some of us thought this might be the ending to this.
My jaw is "working."
I'm a bit surprised (not a lot) but it was not unexpected.
At least he's on his way back to prison for the rest of his life.
Rest in Peace, Abijit Mahato. The folks on this side of the sky have let you down.

I've come to the conclusion that in some trials it is important for the State to have the last word in closings. To reiterate the time line and chain of events pointing to the guilt of the accused. IMO the defense atty Karen ? muddied the waters with doubt and confusion.
I don't know how these attorneys sleep at night. It isn't a personal victory that the atty can show like notches in a belt for freeing dangerous people it is the injustice done to the victim and their family.
Consolation is LL ain't going anywhere except back to the big house. I wonder if the inmate earns 'creds' in prison when he is found not guilty versus guilty of another killing?

I just tuned in to the livestream....and this outcome.
My first thought was "Casey Anthony jury." My second thought is that LL's existing LWOP sentence influenced their deliberation. Coupled with BS's closing, which gave them a loophole, they took the easy way. The case was too confusing for them to follow to see the intricacies and connections, and the court didn't help them.
I thought, worst case, they would hang if there was a hold out.
Crap.

WTH, Bethea-Shields looked like she was having a meltdown after the verdict was read. It was a personal victory for her, god knows why. Is she a family friend? LL's 'surrogate' mother? She compromised ethical standards for this cretin. Why? They never even bothered to tell the jury that he didn't do it!

We follow these trials and are made aware of the brutality of it, how nonchalantly the killer murdered a human being.
No one can make me believe that Mahato didn't know what that pillow being put over his face meant for him. The terror of it. And the waste of a good person living on this planet of ours. And we are left poorer because of his absence and having to house a murderer for the rest of his worthless life. And I don't care if LL turns his life around. That is between him and his Maker. He snuffed out two terrific peoples lives and got away with killing one of them. I wonder what else he has done in his past... he will have to answer for it all one day.

I don't think the defense team ever shouted about LL's innocence from the rooftops because they know differently. If the defense 'wins' a victory for a client they believe is guilty what does that make them?

Arrived here earlier this morning, saw the verdict and just had to leave.
So, very shocked!
Early in deliberations when jury asked those first odd questions, it was clear that something was amiss.
Can't think of anything to add that hasn't already been said. Just hope Shanita stays safe.
Except for following the aggravation phase of the Hulsey verdict, and closings in the OP case I plan to take a break from these heartbreaking trials.

Never expected this.......I guess you just never know what a jury will do.
Very very sorry and sad for Abhijit and his family.
I wonder if the Jury thought that since he was already serving life and wouldn't be going anywhere, they could come to this decision.
Absolutely shocked over the verdict..but..at least he is going back to prison to celebrate this victory and not back out on the streets.

You make excellent points, as usual, Boodles. I hadn't even thought about LL's current sentence -- that did give them quite a "cushion," didn't it? Makes a NG decision seem to be not quite the travesty that it actually is. Yes, an easy out.
And I had a feeling from their questions that they were a bit bamboozled with the whole thing. And if they didn't understand, how could they be sure of anything? And if you don't know, aren't sure, or are still confused after that many hours of discussion, you really cannot and should not convict a person of something as serious as M1 -- plus -- he's already in the slammer for LWOP, just as you said. Almost like a "no harm, no foul" but what LL did to this man, and the world at large, is just wrong.
And he was also simply a likeable young man. A big positive in this world of scariness and bad neighborhoods; kids who quit school because they can; the easy way instead of the right way; pistols instead of PCs; pot instead of potential; brothers shot dead at neighborhood parties; midnight creepy-crawlies instead of bench research; and on and on.
I just hope no one is going to celebrate this verdict.
Some folks should feel shame tonight and tomorrow.
