GUILTY NC - Deah Barakat, 23, his wife & her sister murdered, Chapel Hill, 10 Feb 2015

  • #121
The victim's sister said on MSNBC that neither the couple or the sister were parked in the visitor spot that the neighbor had claimed as his spot on the night of the shooting. She said that they in fact avoided parking there and told friends and family to use the other visitor spots because of the past issues.

Horrific, may they RIP. They seemed like great kids and only babies in the real world, really.

i have been waiting for some confirmation of this - on CNN they just showed the girl's car parked in her proper spot and said that it has not been moved since the shooting, and the spot right next to them was hicks spot and it was empty. so assuming nothing had been moved it would appear that they were not using his spot on the day of the shooting.

Didn't the media report he fled and turned himself in to the neighboring county LE? He probably drove his car away from his spot. I'm still hesitant about labeling it a hate crime. Jmo

yeah, he drove away in a gold car was reported, which im assuming was his, but it was definitely reported earlier that someone was parked in his spot that day and i dont have a link but im pretty sure it was said that he believed it was one of their cars. so it could be many things at this point, could have been some other car and he was mistaken, could have been a lie on his part... i have not heard anything about whether or not he is talking to police.

I read or heard that on a news program too. Maybe the interview with the college student with the blond hair?

— Investigators seized more than a dozen firearms and a cache of ammunition from the Chapel Hill home of a man charged with killing three students this week, according to search warrants released Friday...

Hicks' charges could go before a Durham County grand jury as early as Monday, but prosecutors said they haven't decided yet whether to pursue the death penalty.

From same link:

"Police searched Hicks' home the night of the shootings and found two fully loaded handguns, a fully loaded AR-15 Bushmaster rifle, two shotguns, five other rifles, two other handguns and two pellet guns, according to one search warrant. They also found numerous magazines with varying amounts of ammunition, boxes of ammunition, shotgun shells, BBs, gun scopes and other gun-related items, the warrant states."

Jmo The amount of guns and ammo he possesses does not seem out of the ordinary for here in the Carolinas.

One of the reports said they were parked in his wife's spot. Are the units assigned two spots?

Search warrants in the case say officers responding to a report of gunfire at 5:11 p.m. found Deah Barakat fatally shot in the head as they approached the apartment, NBC station WNCN reported. Yusor and Razan were found inside the apartment.

"One female was lying in the kitchen, near the dishwasher, and another female was lying in the doorway of the next room, near the kitchen. Both subjects showed no signs of life and were wearing Muslim headdresses," the warrant said, according to WNCN. Investigators found three handguns, several rifles and shotguns, and numerous loaded magazines and cases of ammunition at Hicks' home, the station reported.

So it looks like the husband was killed either outside the building or in the building's hallway, and then Hicks entered the apartment and went room to room killing the girls.

Very interesting development if nobody was even parked in his spot to begin with.

I think that assuming that they were parking in his spot is victim blaming. Why assume that the victims were jerks? It is like people are trying to justify or excuse what happened to them. Like ~maybe he just reached his boiling point because his horrible neighbors kept parking in his spot~. Like people want to "understand" why he would be so fed up and frusturated.

Where does it say he was shot first?

It doesn't, but if he was outside of the apartment, it's a pretty good guess that he was killed first. Otherwise he would have run away?

You don't think he might try to save his wife?

You don't think he might try to save his wife?

If he had, don't you think he would have been shot in the apartment? Who stands in a hallway or right outside the door and waits for a gunman to return? That wouldn't be very helpful.

He returned? I guess I don't understand the sequence of events and who was at the apartment at what time.

In his social media profiles and in the accounts of those who knew him, Hicks resists easy categorization. He describes himself on what appears to be his Facebook profile as a “gun-toting liberal” and an “anti-theist,” and vehemently condemned all forms of religion. But at a news conference Wednesday his wife, Karen, described him as someone who “champions the rights of others” and would not have killed three people because of their faith.

Hicks was known for his temper and confrontational behavior. His ex-wife, Cynthia Hurley, who divorced Hicks about 17 years ago, said his favorite film was “Falling Down,” in which a disgruntled and unemployed defense industry worker played by Michael Douglas goes on a shooting rampage.

“That always freaked me out,” Hurley told the Associated Press. “He watched it incessantly. He thought it was hilarious. He had no compassion at all.”

My understanding is that the husband was shot at the door, either falling back into the apartment or just outside of it.
------

According to the search warrants, a woman flagged down police and directed them to Barakat's and Yusor Abu-Salha's condo, saying her friend was bleeding. When officers arrived, they found Barakat dead in the front doorway bleeding from the head; one of the sisters was found in the kitchen, and the other was in the doorway to the kitchen.

Re: parking
My understanding is that each condo got one parking spot. The rest were for visitors, the alleged killer warned the neighbours not to park in the visitor's space next to his assigned parking because it was for his wife. The victim's sister said they steered clear of that spot after some drama, but I'm not aware if anyone was parked there at the time of the murders, or if this even fuelled he killing at all. She claims neither her brother or his wife's sister were parked there.

Whaaaaaaat? What does that have to do with anything in this case? Three young innocent AMERICANS were killed in this incident. Your complaints about how white people are discriminated against in this country seem out of place here.

I wonder if anyone had a problem with President Obama making a statement about the Boston Bombing? That was another case where "only" three people were killed.

Which part gave you that impression?

Barakat shot outside the apartment, one female shot in the kitchen, and one female shot in the doorway of the next room.
