It just dawned om me why HR would not let any of Teghan's grandparents watch her while she was out of town. The black eye, the welts, the stories Teghan would tell them...she KNEW she would lose custody and JR could end up in jail. She KNEW Teghan was injured BEFORE she ever left her with JR. And why didn't JR allow Teghan to go into HIS grandparents' house to use the bathroom? Same reason!

She says she didn't let the grandparents watch her because they wanted custody. God knows what else this baby suffered before JR even came into the picture.

OMG this is just all coming together in my head right now. I think Teghan was being abused on a regular basis while HR was still there with her and I think she left Teghan knowing full well that she would continue to be abused while she was gone.

And the state is getting HR to dig her own grave. They have long known what I just figured out, and they are smartly handing her a shovel. They are going to nail her, I have to believe that.

And I wonder if JR is just sitting there quietly, waiting for his turn to get on the stand and mitigate his own responsibility by throwing a few more shovelfuls on. I wonder if he has been told that this could save him from the death penalty.

My opinion of cross exam --- pretty weak. I think defense atty was attempting to be gentle with her since she was emotional (or perhaps feigning emotion) and he didn't want to look bad to the jury. I think he definitely could've been more aggressive without aggravating the jurors. (I personally think it would have been welcomed). He also couldn't do much with her (selective) memory problems. :/

My two cents. It's worth what you paid for it ;).

Fyi--Right now, they are just working through foundation for the receipts to move them into evidence through this detective. Tedious but necessary.

Okay, I don't understand the whole tweet thing. Been trying to ask one of the reporters to ask Sheriff Bizzell why Helen Creech wasn't charged with not reporting suspected child abuse/neglect on her property? She was Teghan's 'last resort'. The very last person who could have saved her life? She's no testified, under oath, that she knew Teghan was there in the shed. She'd heard her whimpering. She'd heard JR tell her to 'stay away from the god damn door'. She saw the poop outside the shed. Why hasn't she and/or her husband been charged for not reporting a child being held in their shed, on their property, in at the very least completely unsanitary conditions?

Does anyone know if JR went to work during the 10 days he had her alone?

  • #455
Prosecutor mentioned that they will likely go just in the morning on Monday. I believe he said that their next witness after that was not available until Tuesday.

I asked Heather this yesterday and she said she wasn't sure of the technicalities but the Creech's weren't Teghan's kin and they had no obligation to report this plus they only found out she was there well into the abuse? I dunno......me thinks Mrs. Creech got some kind of deal to testify against her grandson??

BBM For that to be true, wouldn't she have to have been arrested and charged first, in order to take a plea deal? And if she took a plea deal, wouldn't the prosecution have brought that up when she testified?

Since when does not being related to a child absolve a person from reporting suspected neglect/abuse of said child on their property?

Is there really no legal responsibility here?

Did the prosecution really NEED grandma to testify against him? They have plenty of evidence to convict him. What did she add of value?

I just got this off of the NC DSS website:

If you suspect that a child is being abused or neglected, or if you think a child may have died from being mistreated, you must report what you know to the county Department of Social Services. This is the law( N.C.G.S. § 7B-301). Do not be afraid to report. As long as you are acting in good faith, you cannot be held liable ( N.C.G.S. §7B-309).

http://www.ncdhhs.gov/dss/cps/about.htm

They HAD to suspect (KNOW) that Teghan was being AT LEAST neglected, with no running water or bathroom of any kind. IMO they should be prosecuted! They could have saved her!!

The Creech family are NOT considered mandated reporters....NOT medical, educational nor LEO individuals involved with the victim. SO, unlike the fictional TV Steinfeld story, no "regular" person has an obligation IN MANY IF NOT ALL STATES to contact authorities when witnessing a crime (or even a possible crime event) nor an obligation to provide assistance.

HOWEVER, if I were one of the "authorities" in Smithfield, I'd be tearing apart every code available (housing, public health, etc.) to find SOMETHING to make this case a "teaching moment" for the folks of the community & especially for the Creech characters! (so wanted to use another term but not willing to "time out"!:blushing:).

edit: just read Flutterby80's research re: ( N.C.G.S. § 7B-301).....bet if anything, she was AFRAID of JR to believe the " Do not be afraid to report. As long as you are acting in good faith, you cannot be held liable ( N.C.G.S. §7B-309)." as her liability might have been her own life! BUT >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
THERE IS ANNON. REPORTING mechanisms available!
