How would she know that? Besides, I would think that "mom and dad" would be more inclined to shell out money to keep this quiet, not once their little boy was already tried in public and the family named dragged through the mud.

she probably didn't know that, but maybe she was told that after the fact...before she picked them out of photos..(if it's a scam)...hey, stranger things have happened...if "mom & dad" completely believe their son is innocent, why wouldn't they shell out the money, if they have it?

I heard it said on TV that shortly after the alleged rape took place, a blog provided the names and the monetary status of the player's families.

Rich people don't stay rich by throwing money around. If they thought their kid was guilty and they could save the publicity, then maybe I could see someone putting out some money. But, once the kid's name is already mud, they're going to be paying out the nose for a defense attorney, etc., there's no reason to pay the girl off.

I tried to stay away from this until there was more info...the slow trickle has my head confuzzled. But what did I do this am? Yep, come here to read this.

I can actually see one side or the other, depending on which paper I read about it in. Very confusing.

has nothing been said about the where-abouts of the victim, prior to midnight?

ok, i think you're confused about what i was 'saying'...maybe i'm confused, or didn't state my post properly.....it doesn't matter..it's just what i heard on Rita Cosby last night....

i agree, if they thought their son was guilty they'd be paying to get this to stop, but if they thought their son was innocent, why wouldn't they pay out the nose for his legal defense?

That's called "bait and switch" in the business. You have pix of certain girls on the website, but send whatever girls happen to be available at the time to the call.
That sounds like a case for Judge Judy... like right after she hears the usual wedding caterer foul up case.

But if the "girl" was not the one that you were "expecting" that was on the Internet, would you just not allow her to come in to your "place" and say: You are not the girl that I saw on the Internet....how does that work exactly.

Even the ones who haven't been charged have incurred legal fees. The parents will end up with legal fees whether the boys are innocent or not. I just meant the parents won't pay the girl off, so if that was her motive, she's outta luck!! :) :)

Correct me if I'm wrong -- but can't the accuser file a civil suit even if she doesn't win a criminal trial (similar to the OJ case) the burden of proof is much lower at the civil level.

Sure she can. But these are college students. The parents have the money. She could get a judgment against the boys, but it would take a while to collect. And, don't forget that her reputation would most likely be allowed in as well. From what I've heard in the news, that wouldn't be so good for her.

Interesting...because I heard one of the boys' female friends on Catherine Crier(?) stating that it was really ironic that the two boys arrested were the most afflluent on the team (as another poster mentioned).

I also heard (I think) that the girls were paid once they arrived. Perhaps, there was a struggle to get their money back because the girls performed for about three minutes or whatever it was...

I'm sorry for all women who have been raped, because I never want to doubt a woman's story. I know, I've been there myself.

But I am really having a hard time believing this one. :(
I hate to ever doubt a person's story in a matter that is so serious.
But this case is just too questionable.

I pray that this woman gets the help she deserves. But I also pray that if these young men are innocent, that they can recover from the damage this has caused them and their families.

The house being cleared rapidly doesn't seem odd if they're athletes and have a curfew, even some dorms that my children have lived in have had dorm curfews. Perhaps they all had to be back at their dorms by 1. Although if that's the case I wondered why they paid for 2 hours of entertainment that was supposed to begin at midnight.
I think that if the house was cleared that fast once they knew LE was on the way or that they were already there, it's because they were underage and drinking and didn't want to get caught.

That's just my take.
You never want to get caught drinking on campus because you can get expelled or some other form of punishment that is damning.

But if they knew law enforcement was on the way, that would imply that they did something wrong. Also the house was not on Duke campus if my understanding is correct.

regardless of where the party was, they are still Duke students, a highly regarded University.
Underage drinking is underage drinking. It carries a severe penalty, fines, stays on your record unless you pay to get it off.
No one under 21 WANTS to get caught drinking. I never drank until my mid 20s, so I never experienced this firsthand. I just had friends who did.

And they may have known law enforcement was on the way for a variety of reasons, including being told about it.

edited to add ... and if they got caught AND paid to get it off their record, their parents would know. Many students at highly regarded schools put immense pressure on their children. This would be a BIGGIE if parents found out. Now, it is a biggie. I'd imagine those young men are all in major trouble with thier parents.

That's true. If they violate the rules of conduct of the school, regardless of where that violation occurs, they'll suffer the consequences.

i was trying to picture this in my mind....the girls show up..they're not what the guys were expecting, maybe...she 'performs' for 3 or 4 minutes & the guys are making fun of her or thinking they were ripped off, whatever.....a lot of bad mouthing took place....i don't see how the guys would have expected HER to give them their money back...they didn't pay her, right?
