UNSOLVED NC - Wilkes Co, Photo of Gagged Woman Tied To Chair, Circa 1970s or Early 80s

The hair is cut off away from the roots. There is no DNA in hair strands. You can only get DNA from hair if there is a root attached.

 Thank you! I didn't think of that.

Carl, do you know a private investigator who would volunteer time on this? That might be a way to develop a body of information that would tip the scales from police dealing with bits and pieces of information to a body of probability which would cause someone to look at it -- even with public discussion once a story develops. The press loves a True Crime story and public awareness would be external pressure to law enforcement.

A private investigator asking questions of people who knew the man at the time, showing the picture of the bound woman (do you know her, etc.) might shake loose some insider information from which a public story would be made -- an unsolved mystery that focuses on a person, and then the public pressure starts.

And even if they could, NamUs wouldn't do anything with this. There is no missing person or even an official case associated with it.

Ok, I have a question now. I use rubber bands to keep index cards sorted. And I have a lot of index cards and have used them for the last 30+ years. After a few years the bands usually degrade to the point of breaking.

How's the elasticity of those bands on the hair?

Asking since some are questioning the validity of the information, if those locks of hair are old, wouldn't the bands be brittle?

Yes, they are fairly brittle.

Here is a photo of the locks of hair, and the slide

To me it's odd that she would think this hair is her ex's - what kind of guy keeps braided locks of his own hair? I know anything is possible but this could also well be a trophy of some kind.

Mitochondrial DNA can be found in the hair shaft. It's not definitive, obvs, but at least it's something. And those braids might also have shed hairs with roots still attached. Those braids might be evidence.

My brother had beautiful shoulder-length hair in his 20s. He saved a ponytail of his hair when he got it all cut off. (I think one of my parents might even have it by now.)

The thing around her neck reminds me of two things:1. Width-end of a 4"-ish baby bed bumper. Cloth-covered folded polyester filled 1/2"-3/4" thick. Had ties on each end.
2. Draftdoger. A foam filled fabric covered , width of door thingie used to block heat/cold from underneath a door that is not completely flush with threshold.

I can see that is being a bumper for a baby crib

Has anyone been looking at murder cases where the victim was known but the murder was never solved? She may not be as unknown as we think. There is also the worse case scenarios of this being a rape/abduction that went unreported or a murder believed to be solved.

I mentioned this point to the detective. I told him the woman clearly is not Angie, or any MP that I know of, but perhaps she might be a known victim in an unsolved crime on their books.

IDK what he ever did as follow-up, but whatever he did or didn't is NOMB at this point.

Oh dear god, I feel sick to my stomach. Those *are trophies*.

When I first saw them they creeped me out.

The thought of them being "trophies"...:(

I was assuming the ex wife's thought of it being his hair was odd but took her word for it as she would know his hair and/or if he wore it that way. CarlK I do hope we get this part of the puzzle cleared up.

Anyone missing who wore their hair in braided pigtails?

To me, the thin braid looks like a "rat tail," a fashion that might have been cut off intact when the fad, and the 80's, ended? (Google shows that Shia LeBoef was wearing a rat tail in March of 2015.)

If the ex-husband tossed it in a drawer, well, the ex-wife could easily have found it in his things.

The Brothers Emery in Seattle were exposed when a relative started to clean out their garage.

The 2 thicker braids, well, not so much unless he was known to wear his hair long.

CarlK, thanks for keeping us on track.

So possibly law enforcement could've looked into this story and checked out stories and fact checked a few things and could of possibly solved this mystery already..

Am I stating the obvious if I mention the pair of braids seem to be about the same length as the girl's hair in the photo?

Seems to be a lighter shade of brown hair

Close up of what is behind her. Focused in and changed color. Anyone else see what appears to be a lever handle?
I can clearly see the lever. It looks exactly like the cranks on my parents 1960s crank out windows in their home. Ive never seen anything like that on a car seat before though.

Carl mentioned the original slide/photo of the girl was very dark.

I agree with you and if you look at the hair on her shoulder being hit by the sun, it looks to be the same color. Something that nags at me about the short braids is that its obvious by the length and bands that they were pigtails. Would a guy put his hair in pigtails like that to make locks?

If he's keeping them as a souvenir, maybe?

ETA: If she was kidnapped, he might have made her braid her own hair before he cut it off. (*shudder*)
