GUILTY NC - William “Andy” Banks, 39, Raleigh, met someone about selling his car, 12 Sept 2020 *ARREST*

Agreed, this was puzzling to me also. And with Covid, getting in a car with two strangers is really high risk too.

And Cameron Village is way too busy on a Saturday to think he could be forced into a vehicle against his will and not make a huge scene and immediately be noticed.
I was hoping if Andy did this a lot that he texted a photo of the potential buyer’s drivers licenses to someone. Although I suppose that could be fake, and the burner phone is a red flag. Maybe there was no time for that. Just not enough info at this point.

I don't feel it's a kidnapping for the same reasons you mentioned @steff13 . It's been 2+ days. With the way this world is nowadays, It could just be for spite. IDK. It could be as easy as someone wanting a car to get from A to B and did something like this. Praying he is found somewhere. I don't like the phone that was found and not with him or the car. IMO

I wonder how long it’s been since he and his girlfriend broke up?

I’d also be curious where on the road the phone was found? Would it have been more likely to have been thrown out the driver or passenger side?

There's also the other car that the "potential buyer" would have been driving. Supposedly 2 people, the buyer and his mechanic. So does andy stay in RR or stay behind. At this point, I'm thinking he was also in the RR and taken somewhere. Sometimes it's not a lot of money or valuables to cause a person to commit a crime. Looking quick cash, title clear - stealing the car was the motive but something went wrong.

It’s also really interesting that his phone was last used at 1:42pm and the meet for the sale was supposed to be 2pm.

Whenever I’m meeting a stranger to sell
Something I am pretty much on my phone right up until the minute that they show up.

We have seen this happen before. I hope there is not another "Millard" out there.
My first thought, too.
Oh wow, I didn’t know that. I remember sitting in a bank for ever about 6-7 years ago trying to get the title notarized. Good to know, especially in the context of this case.
I didn’t know that, either. Last time we did it we went to AAA cause they could notarize, too.

That doesn't seem too strange to me. Possibly he was texted by the people coming that they were about 15 minutes away.

I'm not sure how they determine usage either. Data usage or text/phonecall usage?

Maybe the “buyers” were already there when AB arrived?

This was my first thought. And if so, I think they underestimated the quick law enforcement response and ensuing media hype and cut their losses and ditched the car.

news reports phone was last checked at 1:42, perhaps a text from buyer saying they had arrive or waiting in parking lot?

Thats a good point. I wonder if 1:42pm is the last text sent or the last time the phone was used.

With Apple iPhones they have a thing called ‘Screen Time’ which will show you any activity that has happened and when. It is cloud based, so in theory it could be retrieved from a laptop via the cloud.

I read in one report that's what someone did to determine last time phone checked and that buyer's phone was a burner. (Cant find the story now)

One of the articles says that the burner phone last pinged in Danville. I assume that ping was today?

Interestingly enough, this morning is when the initial article came out with the details that Andy was texting the buyer who was using a burner phone.

It seems likely the person with that burner phone ditched it after seeing the article and probably ditched the car also knowing there was much more attention on this faster than they expected.

I really hope Andy was the person with the burner phone and this was an elaborate plan to disappear.

How valuable would a vehicle like this Range Rover be if offered to a chop shop or other parts dealers?
Selling individual parts would probably be over 50,000. if his Land Rover sells for around 25,000.

That is good news that there is a good chance the criminals will be caught.

What about the victim, what are the usual outcomes? Do they find them?
Sorry, Just saw this tonight.

Unfortunately, while Perps can be caught and ID pretty quickly the victim, depending on what happened, may not be found quickly, if at all.

The key will be the perps, who they are, where they live, etc and LE will put the pieces of the puzzle together. Then , hopefully the victim will be found.

Has it been reported what kind of shape the vehicle is in?
