Ashanti Downey, 20, was rushed to the emergency room the night of Dec. 16 with second-and third-degree burns down the right side of her body, according to WRAL News in Raleigh-Durham.

According to her mother: " She has sustained 3rd degree burns over 70% of her body and is now in critical condition. Unfortunately, at this time, there is not much information on what transpired; therefore, I am keeping her medical location private until I have more answers from the detective."

So they have no idea who poured gasoline on her and set her on fire. This is so senseless and devastating.

Davis says her daughter told authorities she was walking along Highway 27 toward the Dollar General in Sanford when someone approached her from behind, poured a flammable liquid on her, and set her on fire.

Despite the severity of the crime, no witnesses have come forward, and law enforcement has received no leads from the public.
20-Year-Old Woman Set on Fire in Shocking Sanford Attack; Suspects at Large

my understanding from the above articles is that this attack occurred and an unnamed someone (not an ambulance) took her to ER, where staff then contacted police to report the crime. I don't understand why this wasn't reported to 911 from the scene and the victim transported by ambulance and police could begin investigating immediately? Did she get herself to the hospital somehow? Something feels off here. If someone else took her to the hospital, who was it and where did they take her from? the scene of the attack or somewhere else? MOO we are missing key information that might explain why the crime didn't get reported until the hospital did so later. Still reading all the articles I can find to see if maybe the answer lies in one of them. Prayers for this young lady and her recovery.

No witnesses have been located, and authorities have not received any information from the public regarding this incident.

I did a brief Google search and there seems to be very little information available. Hopefully the victim has given LE some information. I can find no reports about how she ended up at the hospital, who found her, and was she alert on arrival. The secret medical location has a well-respected reputation, and I am sure she is receiving top class care

Just a about a week ago or so there was the woman set on fire on the subway in NY. Now this. I don't think it is related, but God how did we get to this place in our society? I saw this today and just thought what kind of world are we living in? Hope she gets some justice, but at this point, no about of prison time will be enough. Prayers for the victims.

I kind of hope they stop reporting on these horrid cases so we don't get any copycats. It's hard to accept that the victim's shouldn't be talked about. But at the same time, I worry that some idiots will hear about it and realise they could try it too.

This happened earlier tonight in Penn Station; and coincidentally I was wondering if this was a bizarre coincidence (perhaps the victim inadvertently set himself on fire while lighting up smoking materials, or attempting to keep warm?) or the work of a malevolent copycat:

A previous statement from Coats indicates Downey was reportedly walking in the area of N.C. (Highway) 27 West and Barbecue Church Road when three unknown individuals doused her with gasoline and lit her on fire with a cigarette.

THREE GUYS walked up from behind and set her on fire? So there's three monsters that can set a stranger on fire, with no problem?

sounds like this man was escalating with the threatening behaviors in recent months. :(

Man arrested, charged with attempted murder after Harnett Co. woman set on fire

multiple people involved. So there are more out there walking the streets. How frightening to contemplate there are others who participated and they are a threat still.

Evil thrives in the dark. A light must shine.

Laws and the legal system don't provide adequate deterrents for this level of subhuman. They don't & won't get it. This person is apprehended? We should have escorted him "out" already. As an example.

Time & money are valuable resources. Why do we continue to waste them on anyone who refuses to participate in the basic act of respecting human life?

You were so right.

snip:
Warrants show that Murchison knew Griffin was facing numerous charges and assisted him in “escaping detection, arrest, and punishment by transporting the victim away from the scene of the crime to conceal its location, attempting to cover up the crime by not contacting law enforcement, not being truthful about the crime once law enforcement was alerted to the crime and attempting to discard the victim’s clothing.”

wait, what?

so mommy dearest watched her son set this poor young woman on fire, then to aid and abed him she took the burned victim away from the scene of the crime? And then what?? Stripped her of her clothes? Did she leave her somewhere or take and drop her outside the hospital entrance? I need to understand just how horrible this mother son duo are and what was the motive? Are they acquainted with the victim somehow?

This bit of news has created a poo ton of more questions for me.

Executing people before trial is obscene and totalitarian.

Under ideal circumstances, in a perfect world, i don't disagree, in principle.

This perp, known to the victim, felt comfortable setting her on fire, in public. He has been charged based on the evidence so far.

Maybe this guy deserves further consideration. Maybe after a few more victims, he'll turn his life around.

He was subsequently charged with felony attempted first-degree murder, felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and misdemeanor assault on a female.

Downey sustained second and third-degree burns on the right side of her body from being lit on fire.

With all due respect to the system and it's processes, i predict a failure to provide even a semblance of justice. IMHO anything less that LWOP is a complete failure. Let's see what happens.

The warrants allege that Murchison knew Griffin was facing serious charges and assisted him in avoiding arrest. Specifically, she is accused of transporting Downey away from the crime scene to hide its location, failing to contact law enforcement, providing false information when questioned by authorities, and attempting to discard the victim’s clothing to cover up the crime.
