I don't know who was doing the map, but here is Hickory. I am not sure of the address ATM, I am doing school work and trying to stay up to date on this case. But you can see Granite Falls, Sawmills, Hickory, and the Catawba River here. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sou...F8&hq=&hnear=Hickory,+Catawba,+North+Carolina If someone has the exact address I can add it. I think it was 21 ST, but what direction, NE, NW, SE, SW. The streets in Hickory are stupidly named. LOL

I agree that men can be too trusting of their girlfriends or new wives when it comes to caring for their children. My late husband was a great father, but when his youngest daughter came to live with us, I was amazed at how he just expected that I would move into the "mother role" without hesitation. It was difficult at first because his daughter did not know me from a hole in the wall and her mother resented me. I was expected to take her to the bus, out shopping, do schoolwork with her, etc., with little participation from him. I finally had to put my foot down and require him to be a part of what I was doing with her. Men are funny -- at least some men.

I found a couple of spots that said NW, so I went with that.

You've got that right.....its 21st Ave....didn't have any direction there, which I thought unusual also.

Ummmm.....redneck? Don't get me wrong....I'm a Southern Girl so I can say "redneck" in a very nice way

Haha! You made me literally laugh out loud! Southern girl here, too (near Charlotte). Redneck, yeah...but something darker, I think, with her. Almost like a prison culture kinda chick, if that makes any sense.

Of course she could be a holy roller for all I know. Just something there that makes me wonder if there was a specific culture she was into.

They have pit bulls chained in the backyard.

then those dogs would have been going nuts barking and growling if someone was abducting her. Most likely scenario I am seeing is the medical bills were too much and the step-mom resented her and she needed to buy drugs and couldn't afford to b/c of Zahra. So she got rid of her. Just my opinion!

Peg, not sure exactly when they got married but one media source reported that they met each other online... a comment under an article says they have been in the US for three years but that was just a comment. When you read back thru the thread there are links for the articles, etc.

I myself want to know if they got US citizenship when they moved here... not that it makes a difference AT ALL but I am just wondering on their situation (for example, did SM adopt zahra? Did they have to have visas to stay here? etc)

Are we to assume that Zahra had her diagnosis and medical treatment here in the states? In the last 3 years? Thanks nurse...I'm really curious.

I'm going to be so sick if this is true:

"Investigators claim that both parents have "inconsistencies" in their stories, according to Saturday evening interviews conducted with the pair."

another one Kimster:

The FBI was involved in the investigation, and police have collected surveillance video from businesses near the family's home and used dogs to search the neighborhood. The police chief wouldn't rule out any suspects, including Adam Baker.

"As the time progresses, we might be able to rule out folks. But right now, every possibility is out there," Adkins said.

****also a reminder that there was supposed to be another update/presser at 1500 (not sure if it is written or live??? but the way he talked this morning it would be live???)

Someone asked about what feeling we get about the step mom. She sure did drop a lot of pounds, trouble with check fraud, homeschooling her step daughter who no one saw outside the house, found her husband online from another country, her own children are not close to her. I would say very troubled.

no one has said. however, it is just my opinion... but I think her cancer dx and tx happened in Aussie...

that is just my gut talking though

OMG - if Zahra had her medical treatment here you can bet the medical bills were astronomical. Pediatric oncology doctors and nurses, chemotherapy, and all the other necessary specialists are very expensive. moo mho

OMG - I have no idea if this is true but I just read in the comments from the ABCNEWS site that the ex-husband to the stepmother commented on another site that the stepmother was very abusive toward the little girl and that he and 3 other people had reported it to CPS with no results.

Clarification- NW being the street, not the direction.

Former neighbor Kayla Rotenberry said she and her fiance were good friends with the Bakers when they lived in the nearby town of Sawmills, and saw Zahra often. The couple was skeptical of the girl's stepmother, in part because she claimed to write songs for musician and "American Idol" finalist Chris Daughtry, and told other far-fetched stories, Rotenberry said.

"We just got to the point where we didn't believe her. We knew they were lies," said Rotenberry, 23.

The stepmother also had a short temper, Rotenberry said.

"She wasn't as nice as she seemed," she said. <snipped>
