I agree the date setup was a bit odd. Maybe one of their families wouldn't approve or she didn't want him to know where she lived or what her home looked like (social embarrassment, etc). jmoAs I intrepret the very sparse information available, Margaret Kay Holst left a note saying that she was going on a date with a boy she recently met. I don't know if she named the boy in the note, but evidently he was located and said that they did indeed go on a date and that he "left her off somewhere near her home".
Certainly an odd way to end a date, in my opinion. But evidently the police accepted his story. He was never named as a suspect in her disappearance.
