The things that don't add up for me about this being an abductor or a accidental death is that there is no smell of death in the house. An overdose on a baby wouldn't be noticed for a while, because the goal is to get the child to go to sleep so once it appeared the child was sleeping there would be no reason to keep checking. Thus the smell of death would set in. The dogs would detect it.
Unless the homeless drifter was completely crazy he would not go into someone's home and turn on all the lights and take a baby. It would be different if the point of entry was the baby's room but to go all the way in is just weird. Unless this person planned to kill the entire family if woken up but that doesn't make any sense.
It could be a crazy woman pretending she's pregnant and stealing a baby. Who knows, stranger things have happened.
But at this point this seems to me to be a weird situation and that the husband wants out of the relationship.
