My thoughts, along with everyone else, are about all of the innocent victims who had their lives torn from them and their loved ones. This New Zealand massacre and all others are deeply, deeply heart-wrenching.

This reminds me of how I felt when I learned of the massacre inside the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in South Carolina, in 2015.

Then all of the other horrid events come up in my thoughts as well.

And finally I remember all of the outpouring of compassion for this tragedy and every other around the world and this reminds me of how great humanity can be.

I wish from the bottom of my heart, along with everyone else, that these horrid events never ever had to happen for us to see the good side of humanity.

‘Great Replacement’ theorist opposes shootings

The Frenchman who coined the term “the Great Replacement” used as the title of the alleged manifesto by the New Zealand mosque attacker says his theory is “diametrically opposed” to the bloodbath at the mosques.

Renaud Camus said in an interview on Friday that the shootings by a white supremacist that killed at least 49 people are “totally contrary to what I defend.”

Camus held firm to his notion that immigrants are replacing natives in France and elsewhere. He says it is a “changing of the people” that should be combated with what he calls “re-immigration” and not with violence. Camus is 72 and developed his theory 20 years ago.

The term has been used more recently by French politicians opposed to immigration, notably far-right leader Marine Le Pen.

Jacinda Ardern is speaking now.

She confirms that 49 people have been killed and says authorities are working to identify them. The injured people have been identified and she says the child transferred to Starship hospital is five-years-old, not four.

She says the national threat level remains at high and, consequently, increased aviation and border security measures will be in place.

New Zealand to change gun laws
Confirming that the suspect had a licence to have a firearm when the attacks took place in Christchurch, New Zealand’s prime minister Jacinda Ardern confirms the country’s “gun laws will change”.

Ardern says the suspect used five guns, including semi-automatic rifles and shotguns and was in possession of a gun licence.

Ardern adds that none of the people arrested had a criminal past, nor was any on a watchlist in New Zealand or Australia. The person charged was not known to authorities in connection with far-right violence. She says:

Today, as the country grieves, we are seeking answers.

Ardern says three people have been arrested and confirms that an Australian will appear in court today charged with murder. The person was not a Christchurch resident, but was based in Dunedin – in line with earlier reports.

Enquiries are ongoing about whether or not the other two were involved.

The fourth person was a member of the public in possession of a firearm but was trying to help police and has been released.

Addressing her comments on gun laws, Ardern says the “mere fact” the suspect was able to get a gun licence and get hold of high-powered weapons will mean people will want to see change – and she is committing to supporting that.

She did not, however, go into specifics.

Ardern said the suspect got a category A licence in 2017 and started stockpiling the weapons legally soon afterwards.

Asked if there are any far-right sympathisers on the country’s watchlist, she is vague – referring only to anyone who supports violence – and noting that the government’s work in that area did not bring the suspect to officials’ attention.

BBM. So? She has not been accused of or charged with any crimes. There is no evidence that Candace Owens had any knowledge or involvement in the New Zealand crimes. And until then, people should not be treating her as though she is a criminal. IMO.

The issue is with Owens reaction, not anything she said or did prior to the massacre:

"Candace Owens Ripped for ‘LOL’ Reaction After New Zealand Massacre Suspect Named Her Biggest Influence

In several tweets — issued as bodies were still being counted — Owens jeered at critics whom she said were attempting to pin responsibility for the massacre on her."

'Hitler had some good ideas' is a well known Cray hole for neo Nazis and holocaust deniers

When media personalities are careless or irresponsible with their rhetoric they can't clutch their pearls if they get co-opted by crazies

Jacinda spoke about why this stuff matters. We must not validate it.

The NZ media has been very careful

Unfortunately we've already seen foreign media and politicians be irresponsible

Bangladesh cricketers 'lucky' to avoid mosque shootings

Members of the Bangladesh cricket team arrived by bus at Masjid Al Noor mosque for Friday prayers when they heard gunshots.

Had they arrived a few minutes earlier they would have been inside the mosque, where at least 30 people were killed by a gunman with an automatic rifle. Another nearby mosque in Christchurch was being attacked, too, and overall 49 people were killed and more than 20 seriously injured.

interesting, so this could still be a solo attack.

Ardern lists many of the world leaders, including Donald Trump, who have expressed their condolences. She says Trump asked what help he and the US could offer and says she told him: “Sympathy and love for all Muslim communities.” Ardern adds that Trump “acknowledged that and agreed”.

She says the two didn’t discuss references to Trump in the suspect’s manifesto.

IMO this guy potentially couldn't (or made choices that worked against) achieving infamy and life value in any socially-acceptable way. Whilst he appears to hold up his values and ideals as a flag to why he did what he did, I don't believe that's why (though he might rationalise it that way). He has a very confused set of ideologies, a mixed bag - it's odd. I see him as someone with no path or direction, then he grabbed onto bits and pieces as he travelled and sought out/was exposed to real life and online views, and unfortunately it all came together in a disastrous way. I'm not saying he was necessarily fame-seeking as a primary goal, just I think from the little we know of him, he was clearly without purpose and that partnered with whatever genetic/personality/mental health/life experience combination he has, it resulted in this. The video IMO shows more an effort to justify his life and purpose, rather than promoting a cause or seeking fame for fame's sake. To me he appears to be the sort of person that could become extremist about anything, it just so happened this became his 'cause'.

Eleanor-Ainge-Roy.jpg

Eleanor Ainge Roy

Police helicopters are continuously circling overhead the city, while approximately 100 members of media organisations wait for the accused to appear. Armed police and soldiers are also visible.

The court was scheduled to open at 9am (local time) but has not. Omar Nabi and his brother are waiting to enter the courthouse – Nabi says he needs to see the man who killed his father.

Michael Orczy, the vicar of St Michael’s church, is standing outside the courthouse after giving mass to parishes across the road. He says New Zealand’s entire religious community stands with their Muslim brothers and sisters and religious violence has no place in the country.

This was an undeniable act of evil. God loves all his children equally. We are all shell-shocked. This is surreal in New Zealand. I have had to rewrite my sermon for Sunday.

We will be with our Muslim brothers and sisters every step of the way. This is an attack on God’s children. God loves all his children equally. This right-wing element in mellow Christchurh is surreal. I am preaching compassion and peace today. Revenge is never the answer.

You're taking the LOL out of context. She LOL'd at the absurd suggestion that she is in any way responsible for the attack, NOT to laugh at what happened. Though IMO it probably was a little insensitive to include an LOL at all, though I realize she did not mean it that way.

Let’s hope this revolting human doesn’t get off with some sort of insanity plea. I think not, from what I saw on the video (yes I did watch it initially) he is very coherent, weirdly matter of fact about his “task” but if reports on this man show he has had this in planning for sometime.

I was horrified by what I saw but I can see how it could be seen as unreal or a “game” . I hope young people don’t get the opportunity to see it

He most definitely want fame, his whole point of the live feed.

I’m guessing there will be strong investigations into where he got these guns from, they certainly wouldn’t have been bought with him from Australia. He’s obtained them in NZ

Apart from one batshit crazy MP in Australia the masses are outraged by his actions. This MP will most definitely be taken to task in the coming days. I say oust this lunatic MP and let’s not allow him to have his life long pension..

without knowing anything about NZ court system and laws i will say there is no way that would ever happen.

1 - because it is very evident just from what we know already that it would be a great injustice, he may have some mental health issues but he is not legally insane imo.

2 - because this killer will not ask for or allow it to happen, it is clear he wanted to be caught alive, he wants to be jailed and become a martyr, and he fully believes this will cause revolutions and he will be proven correct and hailed as a hero in the future - so imo there is no way he will pursue any insanity plea.

Sorry furthermore I’m seeing many sharing articles on massacres like this in parts of the world that aren’t being reported on in mainstream media. The issue I’m watching is these people sharing with comments such as “oh so what about these 20 christians slain” multiple articles too... oh dear...makes me sad... We’re all just humans trying to get through life .

They’ve just reported he’ll represent himself... obviously likes the sound of his own voice... he’ll get his fame unfortunately
