Guys, please please please be cautious about posting his name anywhere - here, FB, anywhere. The fact that the DM article has disappeared (although still shows up in Google results) suggests that Law Enforcement are on to this.

Although the suspect has been denied name suppression, he is appealing this and consequently any breach could be seen as being in contempt of court, something NZ takes very seriously and won't hesitate to make someone an example of.

Please delete your posts mentioning his name or any tie-back to his comment on Grace's page as you could get into serious trouble if you're singled out.

For what it's worth, and I don't mean to call Grace's character into question, I think he was a hook-up of a certain non-dating type ... as in, what sort of person could afford to live at the City Life (a very nice establishment)? You'd need a lucrative career or side job ... hmmm ... one that involves night life and parties if you catch my drift? Pushing a certain something? I'm thankful to the NZ Police for working so hard and diligently to get this scum off the streets. I think we were all worried we were going to have another Kayo Matsuzawa situation (may she rest in peace and her 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 killer be caught one day ... Police receive more tips in cold case Queen St murder of Japanese tourist).

'We're not a safe country': Sophie Elliott's father on Grace Millane murder

The father of a Dunedin woman killed in 2008 has spoken out about the murder of British tourist Grace Millane, saying he can relate to her family's grief.

Gill Elliott, father of Sophie Elliott, told RadioLIVE on Monday he feels "so sad for Grace's family, because I know what they're going through".

The 26-year-old New Zealand man accused of killing 22-year-old Ms Millane was granted name suppression on Monday, with the victim's father and uncle present in the Auckland District Court, having flown in from England.

All MOO ...

Sophie's case was extremely different to this one though (a NZer, she died at the hands of her ex-boyfriend in her NZ home). It annoys me that the media has asked another family to comment on this tragedy ... not only does it dredge everything up again for Sophie's family who are already suffering, but it's really not relevant in the scheme of what's happening now. The focus needs to be on getting Grace back home to her loved ones and the perpetrator locked up for good.

I think people are of the opinion that awful things don't occur in New Zealand because it's such a green, clean country. Unfortunately the reality is quite different ... it's like anywhere else in the world really, and people need to be aware of that. Just today one of the papers featured an article about all the tourists who've ended up dead after traveling through NZ alone ... the earliest dating back to the late '60s.

It's an absolute tragedy that someone so seemingly lovely, and widely loved, should lose their life while on their big adventure before they settle down into their chosen career. She was just starting out for goodness sake! I feel so, so, so sad for Grace but it's nobody's fault this happened apart from the perpetrator - the blame should lay entirely with him and everything should be about getting a proper result in his punishment and getting Grace back home - there's no point in rehashing old cases or asking other victims for their viewpoints at this time.

I think people are especially outraged that Grace managed to travel through South America, a well-known danger spot, with no issue yet she met her demise in safe New Zealand.

This is all so deeply saddening and just dreadful.

My heart aches for Grace's family and friends.

A vibrant, loving, adventurous young woman eager to discover what life held for her - whose life was ripped from her and her loving family. This is beyond tragic.

Grace, you should still be here. Exploring life in all of its facets. I'm so saddened that you are not.

Rest in Peace, Grace. Your bright and beautiful light will always shine in your loved ones' hearts.

DM does not post false info on crime stories...at least, not since I have been keeping track of their crime reporting these few years. They usually turn out to be correct and often first. Yes, they create hysterical headlines etc...but they seem to employ diligent crime reporters. Jmo

I tend to see any murder as a particular sequence of actions in the interaction of individuals, that is influenced by both present and past circumstances, events and emotions. To try to make it simply a matter of nationality is absurd.

OK fellow sleuthers, I need some help. I understand most of the acronyms, and we always have the Websleuths Lingo list for reference if needed. But, what do all these posts mean with just the word "this" and posts void of any text, just containing punctuation marks? For example, I see these a lot:

🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 sums it up. Granted name suppression? Never heard of that before. To protect family members? Innocent til proven guilty, yes. Name suppression? Never, imo. It does keep Grace in our hearts and minds though and not his. Feeling, :conflicted:
Sorry I quoted my reply somehow?

As another poster has mentioned, the DM article now states, "The suspect cannot currently be named in New Zealand or on social media due to a court order." Please do not name him or use initials or anything which would reveal his identity. TIA
I won’t. What about our social media in the United States? Is the name suppression like a gag order?

Ohhh. I was unaware there is no delete. So only staff, mods, etc. can snip, remove posts, and the like. Posters can only edit?

I think some people want to delete what they wrote, and since we don't have the option to, they just replace the text with a dot.
And 'this' is short for 'I think this is important / I agree with this'

Okay, seems like he is getting the protection Grace didn’t get, imo. The man, Mr. Elliot, mentioned above...is right. The world isn’t safe anymore.

right - only mods can delete posts, threads, etc. posters can edit as much as they like within a 60min window of posting. But they can't fully remove the post.

I would say that eventually he will be named, however, in the meantime:

'The accused had a bid to keep his name secret rejected but an immediate appeal by his lawyer means he still cannot be publicly identified.

Such restrictions are not uncommon in early court hearings in New Zealand. During the appearance, Judge Evangelos Thomas addressed members of Millane’s family, saying: “All of us hope that justice for Grace is fair, swift and ultimately brings you some peace.” “I don’t know what we can say to you at this time - your grief must be desperate,” he said.

Round-the-world trip turned into tragedy

The world has never been safe, for especially women, but now we hear about it straight away.
