That is probably right - that the car was driven back after the fact... I guess it we will learn the details eventually, but I just can't help wondering how he would have gotten back to Dover afterward. Maybe asked a friend for a ride and that's how everything came to light. Time will tell, I hope.

This case is just so puzzling. I can't imagine how, when he wasn't included in the evening's plans, they happened to run into each other before she even left campus, and how they could have been in a situation in which an accident could have occurred.

bbm.. is this an assumption that they met up on campus tuesday evening or do we know? I haven't read anything one way or the other. tia.

Good thought!

If I recall correctly, there is public bus transportation from UNH to Dover.

I believe Skigirl was speculating only, based on the fact Lizzi's car was found at UNH.

ahhh. thank you summer. I was going by the possibility that the car went to dover and then returned to unh after the campus had been searched.

I'm going to a family event in Portsmouth this afternoon. I will be looking all around....

My heart is breaking for Lizzi's family.

No, I was just thinking aloud and wondering about scenarios that would allow her car to be parked at campus where she had supposedly left at 10:10 PM to drive to Dover and made the (probably wrong) assumption that it would have to be that she met up with her killer prior to leaving campus. Summer_breeze pointed out the (more likely, IMO) possibility that it had simply been dropped off there after the fact.

I was also wondering about the car. I wonder if they found it on campus shortly after her disappearance but didn't release the info or if it made it's way back to campus? Getting back to campus makes the most sense except I know that a lot of people were looking out for that car. Does anyone know if UNH has video cameras in their parking lots?

I know people always say they are shocked when someone is arrested for something like this but I feel like this is different. People just seem so shocked, it is not the regular "they were quiet" comment. This man seems to have been connected to the community and I haven't seen any reports of previous arrests.

I was curious about the second degree murder charge as opposed to a manslaughter charge. I looked up the NH laws through findlaw.
Second Degree murder: http://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/rsa/html/LXII/630/630-1-b.htm
Manslaughter:http://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/rsa/html/LXII/630/630-3.htm

So I guess this still could be an accident but it seems like there has to more to the story. If it was a true accident wouldn't the charges be manslaughter, maybe with an attempt to conceal charge too?

Pure speculation on my part: Maybe she ran into him on campus, he said, "Hey, I'll give you a ride to your friends' house"--which wouldn't be suspicious, because he does (or used to?) live in the same apt. complex where she was going. also, since all of them knew each other from working together, it might not be weird.

Also: Do we know that she was the one who used her phone last--or sent that text?

Pure speculation here, too: Maybe they caught him as he parked her car at UNH.
Also speculation: Maybe they charged him with 2nd degree instead of manslaughter so that there would be some room for a plea bargain down to manslaughter if he cooperated.

Great point, that makes sense. I couldn't imagine the car had been there all week without the public knowing about it. While it would be possible for him to get the car back on campus without being seen I didn't think it would be easy. If he was caught while returning it I think it points to this being an accident. I don't think anyone who was thinking clearly would actually try to get the car back on campus, BIG risk. Thanks for helping my brain over that hump!!!

It's possible, he is 29 and graduated many years ago. I think upthread someone posted a tidbit of an old article listing him as a senior at the age of 22. I wonder if he still spent a lot of time on campus.

At first I thought of the text message too as proof that she left campus. But I guess he could have sent the text message himself then shut the phone off? He would have had to know her plans though, I believe she left a note for her aunt and uncle before she left for campus telling them where she was going, right?

(Respectfully snipped and BBM)

They didn't when I worked there, but that was 14 years ago and things change. I do remember that, if you weren't one of the first to arrive on campus in the morning, you ended up having to park in lots that were kind of remote. One of the lots I parked in was remote and wooded -- if I'm remembering right, it was near the alumni center (or, where the center was in 1998 anyway). Not sure if the parking situation is still the same there.

OT: All of this talk really makes me miss living there. I miss being able to buy wine at Shaw's, eating at the Friendly Toast in Portsmouth, and going to Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport.

So confusing...did he confess? How do they know she is dead?

Can you tell I am looking for ANY excuse to avoid doing what I really should be doing right now?

You actually just reminded me of something. I went to another school in the University system of NH and we had a shuttle bus that ran until the buildings closed (11 pm maybe?) that would take us and commuters to those lots. I wonder if this is an option she would have used after that late class.

I hope they find her body soon. From the sound of it, he dumped her off Pierce Island. It must be so hard for the family to have her body missing.

Puzzling is right.

~Sigh~ I have heard so many different stories that I have no idea what to believe now. People who spent time with him after the fact, people who spent time with him the day of the fact~Nothing and I mean nothing points to him murdering someone. Some of his friends are talking a set-up but that may just be them wishing~

Some of my friends are going to be seeing him tomorrow (Monday) and there will be information then~If he talks to them

Assistant Attorney General James Vara would not confirm how the two were acquainted, but it's believed that Mazzaglia is connected to a female friend of Marriott's who lives at a Mill Street apartment in Dover. It's the same friend who family members said Marriott planned to visit after her class at UNH Tuesday night, but never showed up.
