It would be interesting to know if there had been any complaints about the area, either before or shortly after the murder. Any reports of suspicious conduct or violent altercations, or sightings of anything suspicious. The area does seem to be quite isolated, though.

I just stumbled across this case today. So sad.

Here is an excellent video news report from this past December. It includes interviews with Louise's daughters and friends. It's very touching.

Apparently her husband provided his DNA, so it seems that he has been cleared. And it also seems much more likely that the killer is a stranger. They checked out a similar killing on the Appalachian Trail, but they found that killer and clearly he didn't do this particular crime.

It's been over 20 years. Hopefully the case is solved soon. I understand that they have DNA from the perpetrator so I presume this case would be a good candidate for genetic genealogy.

Cold Case Unit asks for help in 2001 murder of Canadian woman

The New Hampshire Cold Case Unit is putting out a renewed appeal for public assistance in the unsolved 2001 homicide of Louise Chaput.

''On Nov. 22, 2001, Chaput, 52, of Sherbrooke, Québec, was found dead off the Glen Boulder Trail in Pinkham’s Grant according to a release from the Attorney General's Office.
She had traveled to New Hampshire for a short hiking trip and was last seen on the afternoon of Nov. 15, 2001, near the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Joe Dodge Lodge.

An autopsy determined that she died of stab wounds, and her death was ruled a homicide.
Ms. Chaput’s vehicle, a silver Ford Focus, was located two days earlier at the Direttissima Trailhead, but several of her personal belongings, including a dark blue Kanuk sleeping bag, a blue backpack with a Canadian insignia, and her car keys were never recovered.''

On Nov. 15, 2001, Louise Chaput drove from Sherbrooke, Quebec, to Pinkham's Grant, where she had reserved a room at the Joe Dodge Lodge at the Appalachian Mountain Club visitor center for a long weekend in the mountains. She asked for a short hike when she got there, which was the last time police said she was seen alive.
