Rahway police search for missing Linden school teacher

Gooney, a Rahway resident, is a paraprofessional at Soehl Middle School, and has not been seen since he left work last Tuesday. His family filed a missing person report with the Rahway Police Department.

The police department and the school district have since put missing-person notices up on their social media accounts in an attempt to spread the word and find Gooney.
“Please help us find one of our Linden Public Schools family who has gone missing,” the school district wrote on its Facebook page.

Gooney’s family also took to social media to enlist the community’s help in finding him.

“If anyone has seen or has any information regarding my brother-in-law Brian’s whereabouts, please contact the Rahway Police Department,” Karen Gooney posted to Twitter on March 13. “Please … our family is worried sick about him!”

I truly hope he's alright. Rooting for him to be safe and just taking some time to himself.

Missing N.J. paraprofessional’s family baffled, school tries to help ‘Bring Brian Home’

March 17
Karen Gooney has been anxiously awaiting word on her missing brother-in-law, Brian Gooney, for more than a week.

Brian Gooney is unmarried with no children.

Rahway Police Captain Dawn M. Rodger said Monday that it is not known where he was going.

Gooney’s car remains in the parking lot of his building, his sister-in-law said. His cell phone was not located in the apartment, so she assumes he took it with him — but, when she calls, it goes straight to voicemail. He hasn’t responded to text messages.

Brian Gooney has always been loathe to miss even a day of work, she said. A few weeks ago, he called the building principal to apologize because he was running 10 minutes late.

“He was punctual. He was never not going to go to work,” Gooney said of her brother-in-law.

Flyers have been widely distributed throughout the county in hopes of finding the whereabouts of Brian who recently moved into a new apartment building in Rahway.

His family describes Brian as quiet, but smart.

"The children loved him. The staff can't say enough nice things about him," his sister-in-law Karen Gooney said. "He's just an all-around good guy."

Gooney told News 4 New York she has no idea what could have happened to him.

School officials in Linden are just as mystified.

"We are devastated," Linden Schools Superintendent Marnie Hazelton said. "The Linden Schools community is devastated at this unexplained disappearance."

One theory explored is that he walked out of his apartment building, which is near a river, and went into the water. But, there has been no trace of him there -- or any where.

The school district plans to hold an information session at Tiger Stadium Friday at 3 p.m. to continue getting the message out in the hopes of finding out what happened to Brian Gooney.

Wondering why he would have left his house at 9 p.m. on a “school night.” I gather he had just recently moved to his apartment in Rahway, and it sounds like he was a pretty solitary person (per the news, his favorite pastimes included reading comic books and watching movies, and I noticed that no close friends or partners have been commenting in the media reports—it seems like we have heard from family members and work colleagues pretty exclusively) so I could imagine he might have been feeling isolated...hope he is foud safely and soon, though!

More information is needed about this river - proximity to apartments, is it plausible someone could fall in accidentally at night if it was dark, is it difficult to climb/ swim out of, can he swim? Etc.
My heart goes out to his family. Hopefully there could be clues on his phone if he went to meet someone? I hope more clues turn up very soon.
All speculation and JMO.

ETA: I forgot the information is that cell phone is turned off. It is with him? Very concerning.
