Authorities have made an arrest in the death of a New Jersey woman whose body was found floating in a lake last week in a Jersey City park.

Cops now say 33-year-old Jorge Rios kidnapped and raped a female runner, Carolina Cano, 45, before strangling and drowning her in the Lincoln Park lake. Rios is an undocumented immigrant and has been deported twice from the U.S.

She was jogging through the park around 5:30 a.m. when she was killed.

He is expected in court today.

Another example of how women are not safe in world

She is out at 5:30 am, a time when you never think rapists and killers are lurking about, yet....

I was so upset reading this. She sounds like a really fine person and I have to think the fact that she was an immigrant makes this a less alarming story to the media

BBM I agree. All of these cases should get the same amount of media coverage as Mollie Tibbetts' case did. The suspect here is even another undocumented immigrant. The difference is that the victim is an immigrant, as was Celia Barquin, another Iowa university student raped and killed shortly after Mollie's death. Celia's murderer is a US-born, white, non-Hispanic. The difference in media coverage does make me wonder. Media coverage is important in raising awareness, IMO.

YES - Cecilia Barquin

Again, another capable adult female is brutally attacked in what must have felt like an extremely safe place for her.

All alone on the links early in the morning concentrating on improving her game, no distractions, time to herself, ..... and a vicious depraved mentally ill man is driven to do this horrible thing.

There just are no words to express how angry I get to think that ALL women, regardless of age, ethnicity, physical or mental status need to have a second human being ( or large protective dog) to keep their lives safe

Above BBM
Protective is key. I always think of poor April Millsap out walking her large, but obviously not protective, dog when she was murdered.

I'm also extremely bothered by how our girls are socialized into being "nice" to everyone and not feeling entitled to "tell on" people, especially adults, acting inappropriately or threateningly. There were other adults on the trail passing April and the perp; if only she had felt she had the right to "dis" the perp and ask them for help, call 911 or start screaming. Instead, sadly, she texted her BF that she "almost got kidnapped." That did nothing to save her life, but may have been all she felt she had the "right" to do. Protective dogs and The Gift of Fear are what we all need just to leave home. MOO.

I hate to say this, I have a daughter, and there is no time of day when one should not expect a rapist or other miscreant to be lurking about. I always remind my college age daughter to be aware of her surroundings, not to be part of the "selfie" obsessed crowd. Keep her head up, see who is around you, look for the people searching for the inattentive people in the crowd. It's a sad commentary on the times we live in, but our open borders and anything goes mentality has made the most vulnerable amongst us, easy prey.

‘The sweetest person I knew:’ Jersey City community honors Carolina Cano with run, tree planting

JERSEY CITY — Carolina Cano would never return after leaving her home for a jog on March 24. But on Sunday morning, her community finished her run in her absence.

More than 200 people from the Lincoln Park community jogged through the early morning fog on Sunday to honor Cano’s memory, while a small ceremony was held later in the day to plant a tree in her name.
