A 33-year-old Jersey City woman reported missing Monday, Feb. 6 has been found dead, authorities

Luz Hernandez's body was found in "what appeared to be a shallow grave" in the area of Central Avenue and Third Street in Kearny, around 4:55 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.

The death is considered suspicious. The Cause and Manner of Death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

Hernandez worked as a kindergarten at BelovED Charter School in Jersey City — just a two-minute walk away from where she lived, according to ABC News’ New York City station WABC-TV.

The school’s founder, Bret Schundler, called Hernandez an amazing person and a wonderful kindergarten teacher who developed close relationships with staff and students, according to WABC.

“This will be a shock to the entire community,” he told WABC.

“[She was a] very pleasant woman, beautiful children. It is sad that she passed away. I feel terrible,” a neighbor identified as Monique told WABC in an interview. “She always seemed so pleasant so I really didn’t think something so severe [could happen].”

Hernandez leaves behind three young children, two of which were students at the school she taught at, according to WABC. All classes at the school were cancelled on Wednesday.

Luz Hernandez, a 33-year-old mother of three from Jersey City, had been reported missing Monday after she was absent from her job at the BelovED Charter School and family members realized they had not spoken with her over the weekend, NBC New York reported. Authorities performed a welfare check which led to the grisly discovery.

Hernandez's cause and manner of death is undetermined

I think it is interesting that they are noting that her cause of death and manner of death is undetermined. Being in a shallow grave, I would think it would be obvious that her manner of death is homicide! She didn't bury herself. This is so sad! Prayers for her family and the children that loved her.

I was hoping a thread would pop up for LH. We don't know what led LE to her body. I'm thinking that they are going to keep silent on pertinent details but I hope they have an idea who the suspect is.

An autopsy conducted by the medical examiner’s office Thursday found Hernandez died from blows to the head and strangulation, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said in a news release.

“She was always happy. She loved kids,” Christino Henandez, her brother, told CBS 2 New York. “She became a teacher because she loved being around kids.”

“She was one of the best teachers, everybody loves her, all the kids. It’s just like, so complicated to think about this. We just want justice,” a cousin of Hernandez told NBC New York.

”Hernandez is separated from the father of her children, Junior Santana, who was spotted at church with their children on Sunday.

The slain teacher's sister told ABC New York that the couple separated in November but he remained living in the home, constantly giving excuses as to why he couldn't leave.

Her sister also said that the couple had a tumultuous relationship with Hernandez frequently confiding in family members that she felt she may be in physical danger. “

At approximately 1 a.m. Friday, Prosecutor Suarez released the following statement:

“An arrest has been made in connection with the death investigation of Luz Hernandez.”

US Marshals arrested a man in Florida in connection with the death of a 33-year-old New Jersey kindergarten teacher found beaten and strangled in a shallow grave this week, and the two know each other, a senior law enforcement official says.

According to the official, Luz Hernandez's ex was cuffed in Florida. Marshals from the New York/New Jersey and Florida/Caribbean regional fugitive task forces assisted.
Of note. Arrested in Florida, NO murder charge at this point only desecrating human remains.

The Hudson County prosecutor's office says 36-year-old Cesar Santana was taken into custody Thursday in Miami, and investigators are still trying to track down 26-year-old Leiner Miranda Lopez.
Wow, a second man is unaccounted for. I was not expecting that!

I live about 20 miles from where this case has sadly taken place, and just want to say that I am very pleased and impressed with local, New Jersey and federal LE here. From securing the crime scene, to figuring out the second suspect with the traffic stop, to finding the body in what we could generously call a swamp, to tracking down the ex through Pennsylvania to Florida and detaining him before he was able to make it out of the US - in less than a week. Exceptional.

Cesar Santana, a resident of New Jersey, had just been arrested and accused of the murder of his ex-wife, Luz Hernandez.

After discovering her body in a shallow grave near Kearny, he was charged with concealing a corpse. According to prison authorities, Santana was being held in Miami-Dade County as a wanted person from Hudson County.

According to the victim’s relatives, the murder investigation named the deceased’s estranged husband a suspect. The victim was a devoted mother and kindergarten teacher who was discovered buried in a shallow grave. On Friday, a tweet from the Hudson County Lawyer’s Office says, “An arrest has been made in accordance with the Luz Hernandez murder case.” Despite the phrase “more to come,” the message did not mention the suspect or their alleged participation in the incident.

surprise surprise.... :(

The old adage: men are scared women will laugh at them; women are scared men will kill them.
You made me laugh!! I always have the impression that we women are the big losers. After 73 years, I tell myself that I did my time. But the fact is that we suffered a lot and we can’t forget that. J'aime bien votre adage .
