Officials: Long Branch man charged for fatal stabbing of teen

Sept. 9, 2018
LONG BRANCH -

Police continue to investigate after a teenage girl was fatally stabbed in Long Branch Saturday night.

Officials say they were called to the 200 block of Van Pelt Place 10:45 p.m. where they found a 16-year-old girl had been stabbed. The girl was rushed to Monmouth Medical Center where she was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

Bryan Cordero-Castro, of Long Branch, is in custody and has been charged with murder.

The 20-year-old is an illegal immigrant from Guatemala, the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office said.

Authorities would not confirm the identity of the victim, but family members identified the 16-year-old as Madison Wells.

FREEHOLD - A judge today sentenced a Guatemalan immigrant to 35 years in prison for twice plunging a knife into the chest his 16-year-old ex-girlfriend and leaving her to die on the floor of her aunt’s Long Branch home in front of her family.

Superior Court Judge Marc C. LeMieux said the circumstances of Madison Well’s killing and the her killer’s attempt to escape from police after he was caught compelled him to impose maximum prison terms on Bryan Cordero-Castro for both crimes - 30 years for aggravated manslaughter and five years for attempted escape. The term for the second crime won’t begin until the defendant completes the term for aggravated manslaughter, the judge said.

LeMieux said he was troubled that Cordero-Castro, 22, of Long Branch admitted his crimes at a hearing last year and now insists he is innocent.

The judge recalled that the defendant admitted he was upset because Wells had broken up with him, so he went to her aunt’s house on Sept. 8, 2018 to try to change her mind. Cordero-Castro also admitted that when the teen came outside, he took a knife he brought from his home and plunged it twice into her chest and fled.

“If you couldn’t have her, no one could,’’ LeMieux said was Cordero-Castro’s sentiment.
