Nyhammer is 5-foot-7 and about 150 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes. His family is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to him being found.

•hasn’t been seen since his girlfriend dropped him off near the Whitesbog General Store on Nov. 2
•his bookbag was found in a wooded area near the store the following day, with his laptop, a hat and other personal items scattered about
•last call Nyhammer made was at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday to his girlfriend, Jackson said, adding that his phone apparently no longer has service.

**note: not sure the date of the Tue the article is referring to (about last call)

The part that really worries me/stands out is that his backpack was found. It’s strange that the items in it were scattered everywhere, esp things of value like a laptop.
Wonder if there was anything else of value in the backpack that is now missing as well?

Another thing...
He was last seen Mon, Nov 2.
It states his phone was last used Tue at 5:30am.
Is that Tue, Nov 3? Or a different date?

I take it that his phone wasn’t among the personal belongings due to the statement they believe his phone appears to no longer have service.
I wondered too why the girlfriend dropped him off near the store. I have no clue about the area, I’m nowhere near...all the way down south!

I'd like to know what "personal items" were left.....toiletries, notebook, meds, a mask......that jumped into my head....any place you go you have to wear a mask to enter

Is this the store they are referring to?

If you take a walk with google maps, you will see there are wooded areas near, I esp noticed right across the street.

That ground is very easy to track people in. I wonder if LE responded and checked the prints in the area to determine if it was just Matthew or if another individual was present, and what direction the tracks were heading?

I thought that the Whitesbog Preservation Trust was an unlikely place for a General Store, but when I looked it up, you can see the sign:

It would be helpful to know the exact location of where Matthew was dropped off, and why he wanted to go to that location. The OP just said he was dropped off near the Whitesbog General Store. This store looks like a tourist store, not like a convenience store. The Whitesbog Historic Village web page states that the General Store is only open on weekends from 10 to 4. The Village is part of the Brendan T. Byrne State Forest, so there is quite a lot of wooded areas around, in addition to bogs.

Something is odd about this. If he did not work in the village, why would his girlfriend drop him off in such a remote place? It literally is in the middle of nowhere with bogs all around it. Was the GF scheduled to pick him back up at a pre-arranged time? What is the cell coverage in the area? Is there WiFi? Wondering how he had planned to connect to the world with his laptop? What really upsets me is when you have a missing person case like this and no one thinks to check the tracks. It would have told the story right away. Was it even Matthew who dumped the contents of the backpack? A set of tracks going to the dump site and back would scream "staged". To me they would tell a lot more, like if it was Matthew or someone else. I'm wondering if this is an opportunity lost at this point with rain due today. Hope LE took pictures.

Looking at this place and all around it, and his last phone ping at 5:30 AM, I have many doubts about the girlfriend really 'dropping him off' but maybe more like leaving him there or dropping off his stuff. The lack of more intense searching makes me think maybe they find tracks but not from Matt and they're focusing efforts elsewhere. *modsnip*

However, Matt's facebook gives the impression of a depressed person with unstable moods and a past addiction he may have been relapsing into (several posts about sobriety).

@Vail That was not what I was hoping to hear. The beginning of cold weather tends to be the beginning of suicide season with young males. Rivers are the most common place, and with COVID distancing and reduced social interaction, depression is at an all time high.
