Hobbs, New Mexico. The good news is, the baby was rescued.

Hobbs mother confesses to leaving newborn in dumpster

HOBBS, N.M. - A newborn baby left in a bag in a southern New Mexico dumpster over the weekend was found alive. The teenage mother reportedly confessed.

This unbelievable story could have had a much worse ending - had three unsuspecting angels been at the right place at the right time.

The baby is alive and stable Sunday night in a Lubbock Hospital. The 18-year-old mother, Alexis Avila of Hobbs, has been charged with attempted murder and felony child abuse.

But who knows what would have happened to her - or the baby - if it weren't for three random people and a well-place surveillance camera.

Scary, amazing and wonderful. It's sad, and probably worse, that the young woman abandoned her baby in a dumpster. I hope in her panic that she had no way to take the newborn to a recognized Safe Place -- she certainly could have picked a better place to abandon the infant. The courts will take care of the mother in due time.

Three earthly saints heard and rescued the little miracle.
Hoping that the little one will get adopted as soon as a loving couple qualifies. Newborns really need warmth, comfort and closeness as soon as they are born, and holding a swaddled newborn is important -- it's the next best thing to a womb.

From the link above:

Surveillance video taken outside a New Mexicostore shows the moments a teen mom tossed her unwanted newborn into a dumpster – and the rescuers who pulled her to safety five hours later.

"I got a call about 8:30 on Friday, and Hobbs PD said, ‘Hey Joe are your cameras working out back?’" Joe Imbriale, the owner of Rig Outfitters, told Fox News Digital. "They said we have a crime scene."

Oh, please consider this young mother -- who apparently did not have a lone adult that she trusted.

How awful, to go through pregnancy & childbirth without someone to lean on!

Young teen & baby are both safe now, thankfully.

You said it, @Laughing -- she will never forget this -- it will haunt her and she will cry, cry, cry about it. Her solace will be, I'm hopeful, that her baby will be adopted by those who will love lavishly, and probably more than the mom ever was. One never knows what he or she would do in a very scary and seemingly hopeless situation... I have such mixed feelings for her.

Thank you for that. I had a friend who gave birth at 15, alone in her bathroom at night. Her father heard her pain and went to investigate and found her and her just born infant on the bathroom floor.
The baby was put up for adoption and although she later married the father of the child and had two more children, she refused the father's request to trace the child. I really suspect that if her father had not heard her giving birth, that something like this would have occurred. Thirty years later, she could not admit that that had happened and thought no one knew, but everyone knows in small towns.

Poor little thing. They really need posters in schools telling these girls they can drop off their babies at safe havens like police stations and hospitals.

There is no excuse for throwing a baby in a dumpster.

I’m glad the baby was discovered in time.

Avila's parents told police they did not know their daughter was pregnant and only knew that she was having some stomach problems, Fons said.

Search warrants were obtained for the white vehicle Avila was seen driving and her home. Evidence, including blood swabs, clothing and a towel, were seized.

Avila was arrested and processed into jail Saturday and released later that evening. Fons said she was released on $10,000 bond.

Teen who left baby in New Mexico dumpster didn't know she was pregnant until day before birth, police say

NO, just no. She was 18 and THREW that baby in the dumpster with NO concern whatsoever. She had a car, she could have gone anywhere. She needs charged.

She could have safely and anonymously dropped the baby off at a fire station.

Instead she callously put the baby in a trash bag and threw him in a dumpster. It is a miracle he survived.

The consideration she merits is 15 years in prison and being closely monitored by CPS for the rest of her childbearing years so she doesn't put another child through that kind of abuse.
“What was even harder, that nobody has seen, is five hours of video of people dumping trash on this baby,” said Imbriale.
Court documents say when evaluated, the baby’s temperature was so low that it didn’t register, indicating hypothermia.

Additional details emerge after Alexis Avila is accused of leaving newborn in dumpster

I can’t! The callousness with which she threw that baby into a dumpster. Like he’s trash. It was so cruel. The way she walked. The way she tossed the bag with a living human inside. Just so casual, remorseless and merciless.

Then I think of that tiny soul, wailing helplessly, piteously, for HOURS in a plastic bag. In the cold. It’s horrifying.

I do not care about the teenager or her well being. She is not a mother. I don’t care that she is safe now.

All I care about is the tiny baby.

You know most toddlers would probably show the baby more compassion than this young woman did. Yes. She’s a teen. But she was old enough to at least have had more mercy. Her body language in the video and facial expression in the booking photo show me all I need to know.

Anywhere where the baby could have been found more quickly, even if she did not know about the safe harbor laws. It’s clear she intended for “it” to die.

I get that young women can feel a lack of attachment and deep fear and shame in relation to a pregnancy. But as a human isn’t there still regard for one’s fellow man? I mean even if you don’t feel maternal toward a child, how does that excuse treating the child like trash?

Exactly! And she double-bagged a newborn baby into garbage bags and threw him into a dumpster.
