GUILTY NM - Five Griego family members murdered in their Albuquerque home, 20 Jan 2013

This is kind of ironic. Especially if he had decided to shoot up the church afterall.

"The New Mexico teen accused of killing his family and plotting to randomly gun down Wal-Mart shoppers spent much of the day after the early morning slayings at his church, wandering the campus as dozens of Sunday school teachers were being trained on how to deal with a shooter, a security official said."

First, the guns. IIRC (and from the LE presser) the guns came from other people who bought them and then either gave them or sold them to dad. Have to check the video of the presser for that.

Second, tonight from Piers Morgan's show - NG did spend the day at the church. This is a HUGE MEGACHURCH - they showed video clips - there is a huge basketball court; a teen/youth type club house; a nice big bookstore; all kinds of places. So, more than thinking this was a one building - church type setting - isn't right. This was a great big compound with many buildings and many many activities available to the congregation.
So, I'm left thinking he hung out at the church all day. Strange though that in the presser the chief said that him and the gf weren't physically together the entire time - that he left and came back - now whether that means he just left wherever she was and went to a different part of the "compound" or he actually left the compound of the church all together IDK. It does seem that he was at the "church" all day.

I read that this kid was surprised by his arrest. If I was a detective on a case like this, I swear, it would be hard to control myself after the interrogation and arrest. It would be hard not to sarcastically sneer at him. "So, what? You are surprised you're being arrested dummy? What did you think was going to happen after you murdered your parents and your innocent, little siblings? Did you honestly think we were going to just send you home to a relative or something? Why on earth would you think something like that? Are you stupid?"

There is something with these kids....they're developmentally arrested or something. You know how very young children are me-centered and then they grow and become aware and can empathize with others? This doesn't happen with these kids--they get stuck in the "me" and killing the family is another "me" thing, same with being surprised he'd be arrested, that certainly wouldn't happen to "me". Ugh.

"My dad never gave up on me. He never gave up on any of us. He never stopped giving us Jesus and so I know he would want us to do the exact same thing for our brother, Nehemiah," she said. "So if you wonder where we stand, we stand alongside our brother."

Bagpipes played at the memorial service Friday and the urns of former pastor Greg Griego, his wife Sarah and their three young children were carried into the one of the city's largest churches.

Family made its position clear when they put out a statement being upset of how 15 year old being portrayed by the media-despite the fact he was accused of killing five people.
And his uncle didn't live with them-how would he know if 15 year old played video games or not.
As for 12 year old, why was his 15 year old nephew dating a 12 year old to begin with?

bbm, thank you

I agree with this. Also, while the violent and "illegal actions" video games might not generate problems in the personality of a mature man (like my 59 year old sterling husband, lol, who has played a lot in a 'war' game, or another poster here whose husband played Grand Theft Auto) for an immature, just developing adolescent, the effect can be completely different. I know that GTA doesn't simulate killing people, but it does glorify stealing cars, even in an adrenaline competition to be the "baddest best" thief. For someone who is not yet grown, whose brain and moral consciousness will not be fully developed until the age of 25 (that's what the most recent research says about brain development), repeated simulations of bad acts accompanied by feel-good positive reinforcement, IMO, leaves these kids with an EXTREMELY convoluted take on life.

In cases like this, and Newtown, I believe,IMO, the feeling before, during, and immediately after these horrific massacres, these kids have a sense of "WINNING", iykwim.

Thankfully. in this case, I believe this kid came down off his Pavlovian-trained adrenaline high before he massacred at Walmart or his church. Now that he is not high, he doesn't understand what the big deal is.

Get ready for more, LOTS more to come. Many kids don't even have the advantages this kid had of parents that were at least somewhat paying attention. There are legions more whose gaming has become both babysitter AND parents. And for some, as at Newtown, their gaming is also their friends and community. They are totally isolated and withdraw into life "in the box" and deeply resent the interruptions that force them out of it periodically.

We have a number of threads on teenage boys killing members of their families and/or strangers. So far I've seen a number of things these boys had in common. Violent video games appear to be one of those things. Parents or other relatives keeping guns in the home is another.
NG and the boy in TX were home schooled. Adam Lanza was just sitting at home. Not sure if and why home schooling could play a role. Do they have too much time on their hands because they don't go to school?

home schooling can be a wonderful thing and I am not knocking it. But responsible home schooling parents take steps to offer their children regular extracurricular activities that involve the opportunity to socialize with peers, and have interests outside the home. Without that, home schooling can tend to isolate children from the world in unhealthy ways MOO

My concern is-is anyone checking whether these children are actually home schooled or if they are just sitting around not getting an education? This particular family had 10 children. Did mother home school all of them? What kind of education were they getting?

I believe 6 of them were grown children not living in the home. So it would have been ages 15, 9, 5, and 2 at home.

And it sounds like they all were very involved in the church and didn't the uncle say N was involved in music and also basketball or wrestling?

good question. One I can only partially answer. Reportedly some of the children were grown, with at least one away at college. So it is not know how many of the 10 children actually resided in the home at the time of the killings. [ETA I see Jules had an exact number just above, thanks Jules]

I share your concerns with whether some children being "homeschooled" are actually being taught anything. From what I understand, different states and school districts require differing levels of monitoring of home schooled children. So depending on where the family lives, it is possible for children to be homeschooled but not really be being schooled.

I do know that we have a number of members who homeschool so maybe some of them with more experience in this arena could provide us with answers.

Yes, uncle said numerous times NG liked music. But that isn't the same as getting a quality education.
If the home schooled children want to go to college, etc, what would they do? Do they have to take any tests to prove they actually got an education?

Fellow churchgoers, close friends, relatives and acquaintances of the Griego family shared laughter and shed tears Friday during a funeral at Calvary church — a spiritual home to the family for more than a decade.

Two Albuquerque fire trucks hoisted a 50-foot-long American flag; law enforcement chaplains carried five urns of varying sizes into the chapel; and prominent community members joined dozens of family members and thousands of other mourners in celebrating the lives of the five victims.

N may well have been very active in all those things. But I wonder if that involvement is recent or if it is past involvement. I have a feeling (just MOO) that this kid had pulled back from involvement in his extracurriculars lately.

and I am not sure how much credence to give to this uncle who seems to be placing the blame for N's actions on his involvement with a 12 yr old gf. :eyeroll:

I believe home schooled children must pass certain tests to advance from grade to grade and in order to apply for college I would imagine they would be subject to the ACTs or entrance exams that non home schooled students are.

Again, I am no expert on the subject but this is what I have gleaned from members who home school their own children.

I was speaking more to extracurricular activities. It doesn't sound like he was a loner afterall.

Five urns of varying sizes are removed from the fire department’s funeral engine before being escorted into Calvary church Friday afternoon, when services were held for members of the Griego family. (jim thompson/journal
