In just moments, Mary and Sandi Taylor will face their first day in Roosevelt County Court. They face child abuse charges resulting in death and injury after allegedly leaving two toddlers in the back of a daycare van in Portales. One child died in this incident. @KAMCNews

Both attorneys finished their opening statements. Prosecution: arguing the daycare was not run properly leading to the death and injury of two children. Defense: arguing this incident was a tragic accident but not because of wreckless behavior @KAMCNews

Day 1 of testimony in the child abuse trial of Portales daycare operators. They’re accused of leaving two toddlers in a hot car for several hours. One toddler died in this incident. @KAMCNews

Maliyah’s mom is on the stand now. She’s answering the question how her life changed after her daughter was left in a hot daycare van & later died in the summer of 2017. @KAMCNews

“It’s a mess. It’s nothing what I pictured it to be. You’re supposed to have your kids forever.”

Aubrey’s mom is now on the stand. Her daughter was airlifted to UMC that day (now doing okay). Prosecution questioning about daycare standards and protocol. Prosecution plans to argue Taylor Tots daycare didn’t have proper licensing to drive kids in van at all

She says although Aubrey lived, she’s had to relearn almost everything she knew before the incident. She says she wasn’t able to walk, talk or even hold her head up in the first month after the incident occurred. 1.5 years later, she still has trouble with fine motor skills

Well - I've tried to find an article from the link above, but all they have is Day 2 nothing on Day 3. And those 2 tweeters aren't tweet the trial anymore. You would think if you start with day 1 you'd follow it all the way thru, eh?

Hope we hear something soon! :)

Taylor Tots Daycare center owner. Both Mary & Sandi Taylor face up to 18 years in prison.
Trial started 1/30 to 2/5/19. A 9-man, 7-woman jury, which includes alternates.
2/5/19 Update: Roosevelt County jury returned guilty verdicts for Mary Taylor, age 64, of Portales NM; and Sandi Taylor, age 33, of Portales, NM; on charges of First Degree Child Abuse Resulting in Death and First Degree Child Abuse Resulting in Great Bodily Harm. The first degree felonies each carry a maximum punishment of 18 years in prison. The 4-day trial began on January 30, 2019. Sentencing will be set – 30 days from now.
2/7/19 Update: Sentencing is on 2/22/19. 2/12/19: Scheduled for a sentencing hearing March 4. Their attorney Tye Harmon will then file an appeal, he said, maintaining the jury was misinformed as to the requirements for a conviction since his clients were unaware of their "tragic accident" but acted immediately once that changed. Harmon next month will also request his clients be released on bond pending an appeal, which Mowrer can approve or deny based on her own assessment of the likelihood of the case being reversed. Reeb said she remains confident in the case she brought forward.

Mary and Sandi Taylor were sentenced to the maximum of 36 years in prison. Sandi had six years knocked off her sentence after the judge said she was "forthcoming."

After the sentence was read, a defense attorney argued that there was confusion about the law and asked for the judge to stay the sentence until an appeal was heard.

The judge declined.

The Taylors will remain in jail as an appeal is filed.
