I figured it would be video guy, but this guy doesn't look like him. Does he?

My thoughts exactly!! To me, the person on the CCTV had a longer face, squared jaw, defined chin. I was honestly a little confused when I saw his mugshot...

Detectives zeroed in on Knight soon after Ray and Fry disappeared when Ray’s credit cards were used at Walmart and fast food establishments in Albuquerque, according to the criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court.
According to the complaint, when police looked at security footage at locations where the credit cards were used, they found footage of Knight shopping while driving Ray’s Mustang.
He lawyered up but was obviously stupid enough to go on a shopping spree with his victim‘s credit card.

The day before he was charged with the murders JK was charged with 'concealing identity'.

I was wondering about mummification as well and took some time to read up on it, was just coming back to update, thank you! I imagine that makes the most sense, and the fact that they were protected from the elements/animals in the trash bins would have kept them well-preserved.

You are welcome, my minor in graduate school was forensic anthropology. I was the "human remains" lady at the alphabet group I worked for.

The environment of New Mexico this time of year and the aridity can lead to extensive mummification, allowing preservation of remains for a LONG time. Remains can retain a fresh appearance for a considerable time in the winter, Bloating of the body usually is present two to seven days following death. But with outdoor exposure and/or cold arid temps the remains are more likely to pass through a long period of dehydration of outer tissues, mummification, and reduction of desiccated tissue. In this environment, exposure of large portions of the skeleton usually does not occur until four to six months after death. Insect activity and carnivores notwithstanding, clothing or covering of the body, substrate, elevation, and latitude can also be contributing factors

Thank you Grace. That makes sense.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The Albuquerque Police Department said they've made an arrest in the double homicide of a 70-year-old man and a 28-year-old transgender woman.

Police arrested 32-year-old Anthony Charles Spiess, charging him with two open counts of murder in the death of Eugene Carrell Ray and Zakaria Fry. According to an arrest warrant, Spiess is also known as James Knight. The arrest warrant also states Spiess faces a tampering with evidence charge.

. . .

Both Fry and Ray, who were roommates, were last heard from on Jan. 18. Family members of Fry have told police they found his room in disarray.

According to a criminal complaint, police found blood splatter in a guest bedroom, bloody towels and hypodermic needles in the home and garage. Police believe the needles are evidence of illicit drug use.

As authorities searched for Fry and Ray, Ray's family learned his credit card was used at a McDonald's and a Walmart for purchases from $80 to $100. There was also small amounts of cell phone data use and a data card purchased, the police report says.

Meanwhile, Spiess had a domestic dispute hearing set for Feb. 13 but did not appear. His sister reportedly said he "recently moved in with two roommates" identified as Fry and Ray.

Police also recovered Ray's abandoned vehicle that had blood splattered and a baseball bat inside. They also found disinfectant spray and duct tape.l

. . .

Both Ray and Fry died from blunt force trauma to the head and face, the criminal complaint states.

Investigators believe Spiess had returned to the home after the murders, finding evidence he did so. Some substances found at the scene matched the substances found at the residence.

I am very sorry for these two souls to have met this creep. I don't know what is worse though, the media calling Z a he, or possibly quoting her family as referring to her as a he. Respecting her choice is the least we can do now.

Maybe a little longer after I retire, I still have some folks I've testified against that have threatened me running around so I don't give my legal name to anyone on the internet for any reason. But I'm always happy for unofficial "brain picking".

Ah, the fun side of that area of work. I certainly hope they never become more than threats.

While Knight, who legally changed his name from Charles Spiess in May 2010, doesn’t have lengthy criminal record in New Mexico past charges point to disputes with family.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court, Knight was charged with criminal damage to property under $1,000 in November and deprivation of property after slashing the tires on two of his grandfather’s cars in December.

Police say Knight’s mother, Marie Chavez, called police to report the incident in late November after he was kicked out of his sister’s home.

Chavez told police that Knight was yelling and demanded she bring his clothes outside.

Police say that when Chavez brought the clothes outside, Knight began ripping through them and throwing hangers at the two cars.

“When Marie told him not to damage the vehicles, James glared at her, pulled out a cutting tool and began slashing the tires of both of the vehicles,” an officer wrote.

Knight fled on foot.

Almost a month later, Knight’s sister, Sarah Spiess, was charged with battery against a household member after police say she threw a candle at him because he was “rude” to her friends.
At the scene, Knight told police he believed his sister’s friends “were drug users” and “plotting against him.”
