NV - Tesla Cybertruck explosion at Trump hotel in Vegas investigated as a possible terrorist act, 1 Jan 2025

I think this is going to wind up being some suicidal guy who wanted to make a statement. That vehicle is probably the worst one you could possibly use if the goal was to kill people; its design limits blast radius.
I think the vehicle and the location was the person making some kind of point. I guess we'll find out in the coming days if he left some kind of record explaining what that was, besides rage.

Yes, you choose that building because of the Trump connection, and that vehicle because of the Musk connection to Trump. New Year's Day is symbolic as well.

And he used fireworks in his explosive mix. For an explosion on New Year's. Maybe he thought that was funny.

It reminded me of the man who deliberately blew up himself and his RV in downtown Nashville on Christmas morning in 2020.

This is so funny, I was on the wikipedia page for that a few seconds ago. I was thinking about who this guy would be similar to, and he's the one who came to mind. My guess was white male in his 50's, and I wanted to see how old the guy in that one was. He was in his 60's.

I think it'll wind up being similar.

Does anyone know if Tesla has an app for owners to track their car? I have one for my car and it will tell me the location. I'm sure Turo or Tesla has something similar and the owner would know where the truck was driven and located. I can remotely lock, unlock and start my car, shows me the health of the car, etc. I wonder what Tesla owners can do with their and what features the Turo app has on it.
Answering some of my questions. Here's a link to the Tesla owner features. So many features including dashcam and cabin camera- https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/cybertruck/en_us/

Your question made me think of something. IF owners can track their cars what I'd find interesting is if they rented it, then drove it home to deal with the task the next day. That could be helpful in gaining more info if LE doesn't already have it.

Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill said authorities know who rented the truck with the Turo app in Colorado, but are not releasing the name until investigators determine if it is the same person who died.

McMahill said video captured at Telsa charging stations provided by CEO Elon Musk helped authorities track the vehicle’s journey, arriving in Las Vegas about 7:30 AM. then driving about an hour later into the valet area of the Trump International Hotel, where it sat 15 to 20 seconds before the explosion occurred.

I've used Turo to rent luxury cars for photoshoots, but not since 2019. According to the app, they verify your drivers license and photo. I see in the app that I'm approved to drive, so I assume this happened, but unfortunately I don't remember. I'm guessing this process isn't foolproof, but I'm also guessing that since this was apparently a suicide mission that LE knows the driver's identity.

ETA: posted 1 minute after @vls12345 posted MSM confirmation that LE knows the driver's identity. :)

It could also be that a fake ID was used. It wouldn't be the first time that's been done. Although... if the goal was a suicide mission... they wouldn't care if their name and other personal info was found out after the fact. In fact, they might even want that.

It may also be the most convenient explosive to acquire. I am local here to Las Vegas and it’s very easy to stop by an indigenous firework store (on indigenous land) on the way here from Colorado and buy large mortar fireworks. It is not legal to shoot them off here in Vegas, but that doesn’t stop anyone and I don’t think this person cared about laws.

We watched a family shoot off what appeared to be commercial-quality (illegal) fireworks last night for about 10 minutes in the park next to our home. They purchased them in Moapa which would have been right on the way from where the Cybertruck was rented and here.

Question for you with local knowledge...It looks like he would have driven from Colorado via I-80 then I-15 and crossed into Nevada at Mesquite about 7:20 or 7:30 (I've seen both times stated). According to Google maps it would then be about an hour and 10 minutes to the hotel. That would suggest that it was the driver in the car and not the valet because there really would not be enough time to have the valet park and then bring the car back.

Regarding illegal fireworks - there was an explosion here in Hawaii last night in a neighborhood that killed at least 3 and critically injured dozens more! 3 dead, dozens injured in massive illegal fireworks explosion in Aliamanu

I used to live in Arizona and have been to Las Vegas many times. Very familiar with the firtewoks trad. We had to go to New Mexico though.

I'm not seeing something that looks like large mortar. I see something that looks like it could be "black cats" or "boom sticks"...Aka Those things that look dynamite.

Re: the Hawaii tragedy. Holy cow. That video is disturbing in the intensity of all the fireworks going off at once. It's almost unbelievable. (Also, in the video, the reporter confirmed that now four have died from the incident with others still hospitalized.)

I lived on Oahu for 2 1/2 years and I actually lived less than a mile from where this incident took place. Driving distance a mile.. straight from my house to this house.. more like 1/4 mile. I spent 2 New Years Eve's there and I can tell you the amount of illegal fireworks being let off is unlike anything I've ever seen.. we'd climb up a hill near our house to watch and 360 degree around all directions fireworks.. all illegal being let off by anyone and everyone who had acquired them. How it's possible to get them I'll never know. People are broke but spend $1,000s and $10,000s on illegal fireworks. Such a tragedy and it seems it's usually the innocent who are harmed. I am curious about what fireworks were in this truck. It's sad that something mean for safe enjoyment can turn into literal bombs/projectiles in the wrong hands.

I have the same experience on the northwest edge of town in Las Vegas for the 4th of July. Illegal fireworks as far as the eye can see. They’re everywhere, hundreds at once, in all directions. Dangerous, but widespread.

I have not seen confirmation of exactly where in Colorado the Cybertruck was rented, have you? I go back and forth all the time from Boulder, Denver, Fort Collins and Colorado Springs.

I-80 is too far north. Denver to Las Vegas is most efficient using 70 and I-15. We don’t take 80 unless we’re going to Salt Lake City.

Moapa is between the hotel and Mesquite and would be a decent source of fireworks.
Supposedly the tribal store opened in Moapa at 7 a.m. today, although I cannot confirm 100% that happened due to the holiday.

ETA: The timeline appears too tight to stop and buy explosives. They obviously were able to carefully track the charging stops and there are cameras everywhere, so LE may already know where he picked up the explosives.
