I can tell you that my experience of having 3 merlin falcons (prairie) living in my back yard for about 3 months - it looks just like to me. Their tails are stubby, they are not very tall but have large wingspan, they attack the little birds in flight and it is a gruesome sight to see.

re: 8 missing teeth - I had all four wisdom teeth pulled, and at various points have had to have 3 others removed (my choice over root canal for at least one of them). My mother also had a "bridge", as she called it, with a couple/few fake teeth on it to fill in a couple/few spots. You can't see any of my 'holes' when I smile, and my teeth that are there are perfectly nice (you'd never know ANY were missing), but I had some damage that was best tended to with removal so.. that can be a very simple explanation.

Like this: http://www.falconcam-cmnh.org/e107_files/public/1208467925_28_FT28581_angry_falcon.jpg

Obviously that's not a t-shirt :) But it's very close to the pose, and the bird. It's a falcon attacking the camera on top of a Cleveland building.
It is difficult to see the vision of the artist who drew the design, but it appears the feathers are considered more even as they come out on either side near the tail feathers and the curve doesn't start until near the tips of the wings. The wings on a falcon are higher on the body and they curve up quickly. And note the shape of owl wings on totems. It is the way some Native American artists depict owls. I thought it was a falcon at first until I noticed the shape was off.

I guess it doesn't matter as we should explore all types of birds including falcons, owls, eagles, etc. since we cannot determine the shape of the head as that critical piece appears to be missing.

[*]Cause of Death: A Forensic Anthroplogist found he had been stabbed. A Forensic Pathologist did not identify any stab wounds to the victim.

BBM - I wonder if we could get clarification on this, if it's not here somewhere already? I did read the whole thread and if I've missed it I apologize.

Regarding the shirt - It reminds me of the souvenir t shirts we would buy when we went to the Adirondacks when I was little - nature preserve type places seem to feature realistic animal prints in my (limited) experience, like that shirt seems to be. It does appear to be early 1980s to me. (I say this because I'm one of six kids and my many brothers had many 1970s and 80s t shirts.)

I don't think this person is in the databases. Maybe wasn't even reported missing. I say this because of one of my brothers could have become this person, but for the grace of God. He took off hitchiking in about 1979 with a friend. They worked at state parks around the country, in Florida at one point and then getting jobs out west (at Lake Tahoe at one point in fact, weirdly enough) which they just sort of winged it to get to when it was time. Rides, busses, etc. All cash or whatever back then, no records of travel. At one point my brother became despondent and went to Yosemite and had his friend drop him off and leave him there alone.. he was going to walk off a cliff. Instead he fell in love with being a mountain man... he left when I was about 6 and I didn't know if he was alive or dead until I was more than 30. I'm 42 now and still haven't seen or spoken to him but he wrote a little book about his journey and decision and way of living up there in the Sierra Nevadas now, and one of my other siblings found reference to it and his name, as author, on facebook and that's how we found he was alive. (His book literally begins with "Big cliffs are easy to step off".. that's how I know why he went there. Crazy.)

But my whole point is, we never reported him missing because he WASN"T missing.. I mean, we had an address and birthday cards and letters wouldn't be returned to us.. and at one point he wrote back to me once.. but said he was going on a trip aroudn the world with a great girl he'd met and wouldn't be in contact for awhile... and he'd always been a bad one with writing and calling anyway (those days there was no cellphone or internet of course) .. but then we heard nothing for months then years, till before you know it, years after mom died my other sibling found that facebook reference. I do genealogy research and sometimes would look for his name and social security number in the social security death index but never found anything. Still never occurred to me to report him missing though. He was just.. not talkative we figured. He'd gone his own way.

I think the unidentified male in this case is probably like my brother.

Just my opinion and sorry to sidetrack.

Editing to add: If so, social media could be very helpful. Instead of asking if anyone recognizes this "missing person" who was found, playing up the angle of "do you have a relative you haven't spoken to in longer than you realize who matches this description" type of thing, you know?
Are you absolutely CERTAIN your brother is still alive? Has anyone in your family actually laid eyes on him? Is it possible someone assumed his identity? I'm not suggesting he's our John Doe. He can't be because he left in 1979 according to you seeing him at 6 years old and your being 42 now. But I'm wondering how you can be certain he is the person who wrote the book.

Reposting for a refresher:

In an effort to clarify some of the facts and timeline of this case...

On March 12, 1992 a male caller reports that he found a skeleton in Sand Canyon and provides detailed directions to the location. The caller refuses to identify himself. Law enforcement locates the remains the next day.

The body was nearly completely skeletonized. The victim was aged between 35 and 50 and stood between 6’0” and 6’3”. He had reddish/brown hair.

The victim had dental work done, to include a root canal. The victim was missing several teeth prior to his death. The victim had been stabbed. The body was missing both hands and feet.

The body was clad only in what remains of a T-shirt. The shirt has a partial design of what appears to be a bird with outstretched wings with an orange circle (likely a stylized sun) in the background.

A pair of Levi Strauss 517 pants in relatively good condition was found inside of a moving blanket that was covered in white paint. The moving blanket and pants were found nearby. The pants are 32W by 36L. Men’s brief-type underwear were found nearby as well as a black Heavenly Lake Tahoe hat. The clothing was scattered over a broad area.

A pair of black Stadia shoes was located about a half mile away from the remains. There is evidence the shoes were too small for whoever wore them. There is also evidence the shoes had been repaired in somewhat of a unique manner. It is unknown at this time if the shoes actually have anything to do with this case.

At the time the body was located, a deputy sheriff on scene recalled handling an abandoned vehicle in October of 1991 (7 months prior to body discovery). An anonymous caller called this particular abandoned vehicle into the Mono County Sheriff’s Office. The vehicle, a 1979 Pontiac Grand Prix, with Oklahoma plates, was found along Highway 338, about two miles from where the remains were found. The vehicle was found in a manner that suggested whoever put it there was trying to conceal it. The registered owner was ultimately located and interviewed, but nothing conclusive came out of the interview. The vehicle may or may not have anything to do with this case.

In 1999 this investigation was reactivated and a press release was put out. As a result, a woman who lives nearby reported she started seeing a dog come around her property about 9 months prior to the discovery of the body. The dog would leave in the direction where the body would later be found. The woman took a picture of the dog.

There was a dog collar located in the area of the remains however it is unknown how close the collar was located to the body. This photo was taken to area veterinarians, but no identifications were made. This dog may or may not have belonged to the victim. Nothing definitive to prove it either way was ever found.

In 2014, the case is reassigned again. Utilizing modern technology, a DNA profile of the victim was developed and entered into CODIS.

The clothing evidence will be re-processed utilizing modern technology in the near future. At that time, hopefully there will be conclusive proof as to whether or not any of the clothing and shoes belonged to the victim. Additionally, an isotope analysis of the victim’s hair will be done in the near future which could reveal clues regarding where the victim had been prior to his death.

A consultation was done with Texas State University regarding the condition of the remains in hopes of narrowing the time of death. Based on this report, we believe the victim probably died sometime between 4 and 14 months prior to discovery.

Previous investigators had the subject’s skull sent to a facial reconstruction artist. Those pictures are one artist’s rendition of what they believed our subject might have looked like. Detectives are sending the skull out to be reconstructed again for another perspective on what our subject may have looked like.

Other investigative leads have been developed as a result of the fresh look at this case, however these will not be publicly discussed at this time.

Further photos will be posted at a later time.

Please contact via private message lcsodetectives or mmarty with any leads on this case. Please keep in mind that while we can't always comment on certain aspects of the investigation, we do read these posts and we appreciate any and all ideas!

hooters.jpg

This is what I woke up thinking about the other day (LOL) I know it's a "hoot" (from Hooters).

I guess the point we need to remember is this is not a photograph picture so it could just be artistic license with the design of this tee. It is also hard to understand the orientation of the point of view (ie: whether we are to be looking up at the bird at a 45 degree angle or a 90 degree). I don't know to be honest.

A thought on the hands and feet being missing -- my first instinct was to think of all the random hands and feet that have been found over the years. IMO, I've always thought it was a truck driver who must be doing it.. (perhaps a moving man? who knows... ) anyway there's a thread here somewhere for the random body parts I think. I know I've read about so many feet with shoes still on them turning up in water sources over the years that it's left an impression on me though.

Yeah when my other brother died this past year we got ahold of him definitively. It's Rick, I've seen him in far more recent photos and both seen and heard him in some videos as well - he's been interviewed a couple/few times by BBC america and stuff. 100% positive. Plus we spoke to him at his work up in the mountains and went through his boss to do it, everything's legit. But thank you for taking a moment to point your sleuth eye at my own situation to make sure it's legit, there's no better people than you all to do it! GGE - I thought of Adirondack as that is where I live! I'm still checking and have also thought to use facebook/social media. We are on exact same wave length re person not being reported - thanks! Hope you reunite with your brother!

I've been checking paintings, patches, greeting cards, etc. I'm about to go at this from an entirely new angle. I'm wondering if there are better internet search engines for this type of research. That's my next project---after the Aviary tomorrow.

If someone can make up a clean reconstruction of the snip of shirt we have, then you can open google image search and drag the image into the search box and it can search for identical and/or "visually similar" photos. I alreayd did it with the facial reconstruction on page one and it kicked back a bunch of missing sites using the same image, and a bunch of headshots for celebrities with short reddish hair.

When I tried with the supplied image of the shirt it kicked back "visually similar" photos mostly of gloved hands holding down little reptiles, lol.

(edit - if you've ever seen Catfish, this is basically - if not EXACTLY - what they do)

I'm being stalked! I went to my facebook page, and look at the sponsored advertisement on it!

Capitalism is watching our every keystroke. We'll never escape the orange circles and birds.

Thanks. I'll stop by my girlfriend's art studio tomorrow and ask her to reconstruct it for us.

I printed out the photos and I'm going to throw them on the light box tomorrow. That heightens the contrast with the dark lines and might give a clearer picture of the design.
