Mayor Eric Adams was on the scene Sunday, calling the fire “a horrific, horrific painful moment for the City of New York.”

“The impact of this fire is going to really bring a level of pain and despair in this city,” Adams said at a press conference. “This is going to be one of the worst fires we have witnessed in the City of New York in modern times.”

17 story or 19 story building.*
Regardless, unbearably sad.

"The commissioner added that the apartment where the fire originated had its door opened, allowing for the blaze to spread throughout the building."
If article said which floor was fire's point of origin, I missed it.

More than 200 firefighters at the scene.

What brave and hard-working folks these firefighters are! The picture with the one carrying the baby out of a window really got to me. Prayers for all those displaced in this cold weather, and those who have lost loved ones and are traumatized.

I read earlier the fire started on the first floor, a restaurant. They had several electric bikes/scooters charging and the lithium battery combusted. I'll try to find a link. It's just devastating.

Here's the article.

eta, Caught the tail end of a press conference. The man speaking said they are still investigating the cause of the fire. He said all the victims died from smoke inhalation. Not burned.

Now it's a space heater.

A malfunctioning electric space heater caused the Bronx apartment building fire that killed 19 people, say #NYC officials.

So, so many fires from space heaters every winter...as a Salvation Army member in my community, we hear about it all too often.

The old-fashioned ones, with the red-hot metal coils, are extremely dangerous. Newer ones don't kick out as much heat, but they are far safer.

I think that was a separate fire that started on Jan 8.

Sprinkler systems not required in the city? Unbelievable.

I have read that sprinklers are required in new builds, but apparently this building dates from the 1970s, and was built to Federal codes of the time. I don't have sources to quote immediately, so JMO.

Typically required in construction from a certain date, but rarely retroactive.
