GUILTY NY - 30 injured in Manhattan bombing, 17 Sept 2016 *Ahmad Khan Rahimi arrested*

I don't think these two are involved, since their actions would make no sense whatsoever if they were involved. They removed the roller bag, made the bomb visible, so a woman saw it and reported it to the police.

The U.S. Attorney's office said that the first prosecution of Rahami will take place in Manhattan federal court, and has filed a writ to have U.S. Marshals bring Rahami across the river from New Jersey.

Although Rahami also left bombs in New Jersey and engaged in a shootout when he was caught, the greatest damage occurred when 31 people were injured by a bomb that exploded on 23rd Street.

The US Attorney said he didn’t know when Rahami would actually be brought to federal court — citing “operational issues” with the marshals, the fact that Rahami is currently in the custody of local officials in New Jersey, and Rahami’s medical condition.

A lawyer for Rahami asked to see his client on Wednesday and suggested the man's first court appearance could occur in his hospital bed.

I think they removed it for a reason. Or possibly left the note there. Jmo though. They removed it out of the duffle bag and out of the plastic white trash bag. Saw wires and cell phone attached (supposedly the cell phone was disconnected) and went on their way. Why not report to LE?

Or AKR left something behind that may identify him too quickly and they helped remove it. I.e, address tags on luggage.

Again, jmo.

In the NJ/NY area, everyone is watching this story. Luckily the guy who found Rahami was watching CNN.

When I saw the photo of these two, I was very surprised. I wouldn't expect two guys who look like this to rummage through tossed-out luggage on the street. That isn't to say they didn't do that (I don't know, of course), but it just surprised me to see a couple of nicely-dressed men who look like they are out for the evening together, not people who would be picking up discarded luggage, though I know items are scavenged off city sidewalks by all sorts. The photo wasn't what I expected.

So, I was surprised by what the luggage-guys looked like and I'm also surprised that no one is recognizing them. I would think if they lived in Chelsea or were regulars, someone in the neighborhood would've come forward to ID them.

I'm surprised that I'm now thinking that these two may have been involved.....I didn't see that coming.

Of course, we don't know. These two could be two totally innocent guys who were curious about the luggage and nothing more than that. (Was the luggage on 27th Street the "girl" luggage that the perp was hauling around?)

jmopinion, subect to change

I'm not sure if it's the girly luggage. I wish LE would show photos of them after with the luggage, the photo released seems to be prior (or after if they discarded it right after taking it)

Maybe someone has seen this luggage laying on a street. Or a garbage man recalls throwing it in the truck. Then they can view more cameras.

I'm sure they have cell phones with social media. They will see their photo everywhere. I also have seen it on light poles in the city.

I have no cell phone except with a minutes card. Some people simply are not interested in news.

I think the girly luggage was left on 23rd street.

I wonder what type of luggage was used in these instances? The homeless man in Elizabeth was drawn to the backpack or luggage, too.

These two very well dressed men don't appear to be the type to take away luggage from garbage. Just seems odd.

Even odder is that the two have not been ID'd by someone else.

large burned patches of grass can be seen in the backyard behind the fried chicken shop in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

the burn damage to the lawn in the family's back garden is clearly visible from a neighboring property

More damage: The obvious burn mark on one side of the garden may not be the only one - there is also apparent damage to the grass on the other side

Prosecutors and New York's top federal public defender are squabbling over when Rahami will get a lawyer.

The head of the federal public defenders office in New York asked on Wednesday to be appointed as Rahami's attorney and to be allowed to meet with him, saying the suspect has not had the advice of a lawyer thus far.

The FBI said that Rahami was arrested by police in New Jersey and remained in the custody of that state, not the federal government. A U.S. magistrate judge late on Wednesday said he accepted that position.

"The Government asserts unequivocally that the defendant 'is not in federal custody,'" Judge Gabriel Gorenstein wrote in an order late on Wednesday. "Whether there are federal authorities questioning defendant does not address the issue of custody."

The judge said the timetable for when Rahami can meet with a public defender cannot be decided until the issue of custody is resolved.

I hate to say it, but, it would make sense that those two luggage takers are somehow involved.

Emptying it out and walking away. Well dressed. Groomed. Clearly, not homeless.

I'm leaning toward that too....but can't figure WHY they needed to remove the device from the luggage. My first guess (pulled from the air) is that perhaps that bomb didn't go off as expected, so they went to check on it. Perhaps they thought the luggage was impairing it in some way???

Total guess.

Mr. Rahami’s [Ahmad's father] contact with the authorities started in August 2014, when the local police were called to the family’s home after a domestic dispute during which Ahmad stabbed his brother.

Mr. Rahami said that during the course of the investigation, the F.B.I. became involved and he told agents from the bureau everything he knew about his son’s activities.

“I told the F.B.I. to keep an eye on him,” he said. “They said, ‘Is he a terrorist?’ I said: ‘I don’t know. I can’t guarantee you 100 percent if he is a terrorist. I don’t know which groups he is in. I can’t tell you.’”

Mr. Rahami offered details to the F.B.I. about what he saw as his son’s increasingly disturbing behavior. “The way he speaks, his videos, when I see these things that he listens to, for example, Al Qaeda, Taliban, he watches their videos, their poetry,” he said he told federal agents.

In the interview, he spoke about his son’s admiration of Anwar al-Awlaki, once Al Qaeda’s leading propagandist, who is also popular with the Islamic State’s followers, and how he watched Mr. Awlaki’s videos, but it was unclear if he mentioned Mr. Awlaki’s name to the agents.

The agency, in a statement earlier in the week, said it had conducted an assessment of Ahmad Rahami that included multiple interviews with the father, a review of F.B.I. databases and public records and checks with other agencies. But the review did not turn up anything that warranted further inquiry, and the matter was closed.

Two law enforcement officials said that Ahmad Rahami was never interviewed, even though he was in jail at the time of the inquiry. His father questioned why they never spoke with his son.

“They didn’t do their job,” he said in the interview, which was conducted in his native language, Pashto.

The agency had no immediate comment Thursday on Mohammad Rahami’s statements.

I saw an interview with John Miller (Deputy commissioner of Counterterrorism task force) this morning. He was trying not to say too much and was honest about it). He did say that agencies would like the bag. For various reasons, one being DNA. He, of course, downplayed the whole "search for the two men who are NOT suspects".

I believe this was the interview I saw.
