Former Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., who was expelled from the House of Representatives after being indicted on 23 federal counts including fraud and misusing campaign funds, pleaded guilty Monday in federal court to two of the charges.

The Long Island Republican faces a mandatory two-year minimum sentence after pleading guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. But Judge Joanna Seybert estimated the term could range from six to eight years behind bars when he is sentenced on Feb. 7, 2025. Santos also agreed to pay nearly $374,000 in restitution.

Prediction: He somehow slips out of the country before Feb. I hope I'm wrong, but the guy is a con artist and I don't trust him.

A Feb.7, 2025 sentencing is an offensive joke but not as offensive as 2 out of 23.
Was Santo's lawyer(s) that good or the prosecution that weak?

Thanks for the update.

Oh, please.

“I understand my actions have betrayed the trust of my supporters and constituents,” Santos said at a hearing Monday, his voice wavering at times. “I deeply regret my conduct.”

"Lawyers for Santos, 36, are likely to seek leniency for the ex-lawmaker, pointing to his decision to admit guilt and spare the court from the time and expense of a trial."

Will he go crawl under a rock for 6 months or start a new shtick and grifting routine?

"The Mr. Santos who appeared in court bore little resemblance to the shameless provocateur whose antics grabbed headlines. On Monday, that bravado was replaced by a wavering voice and words of contrition."

It appears from what was said at the beginning of the presser Santos will definitely be going to prison for at least 2 years.

Begins @ 21:00

Would like to bet that he will have a prison coach....and after he serves time he will be a consultant for those entering the big house.

I suspect he will not flourish in a prison environment. But agree that he will back.on the grifting circuit as soon as he's released.

1/8/25

Disgraced former Congressman George Santos had his February sentencing delayed until April 25, a judge ruled Wednesday.

That will give Santos, 36, additional time to keep making new episodes of his podcast, "Pants on Fire with George Santos," presumably so that he can pay the money he owes the government.

Well that delay is IMO lame excuse. And the judge to delay it per request? SMH. No wonder no one is held to account these days. Shameful and shameless. I mean IDK for sure, but didn’t ‘Mr. Santos’ have ~24 hours per day and all these weeks and months prior to do podcasts? SMH. I can’t wait to not watch any of them. MOO

District Judge Joanna Seybert played right into Scamto's toxic narcissism.
Shameful.

8/16/24 Update: A request came Friday afternoon in a letter from prosecutors who said they & defense attorneys sought a hearing but did not say why. The same letter also requested an extension of time for the defense to respond to pretrial motions. The judge granted both requests & set the hearing for 3pm at U.S. District Court in Central Islip on 8/19/24. The purpose of the hearing was not immediately clear. It is speculated that Santos is expected to plead guilty to “multiple counts” of his sprawling fraud indictment at a hearing Monday, according to a source familiar with the case.
8/19/24 Update: Santos plead guilty Monday in federal court to two of the charges. The Long Island Republican faces a mandatory two-year minimum sentence after pleading guilty to wire fraud & aggravated identity theft. Santos admitted filing bogus reports with the Federal Election Commission, embezzling campaign funds, charging credit cards without authorization & fraudulently obtaining unemployment benefits. While he pleaded guilty to only two of the 23 counts, he confessed to taking part in a wide range of conduct that Judge Seybert can use when determining the final sentence. Judge Joanna Seybert estimated the term could range from six to eight years behind bars when he is sentenced on 2/7/25. Santos also agreed to pay nearly $374K in restitution & is subject to a forfeiture order of more than $205K.
1/3/25 Update: Santos asked a judge on Friday to delay his sentencing in his federal fraud case. Santos is currently scheduled to be sentenced on 2/7/25 in Central Islip, New York, after pleading guilty to federal fraud, campaign finance & embezzlement charges. His attorneys asked the judge to postpone the sentencing by six months, until August, to give Santos more time to make money so he can meet the nearly $600,000 he owes in restitution & forfeiture, according to a new court filing. "Mr. Santos now has a viable path to making meaningful progress on satisfying his obligations," his lawyers stated in a motion filed on Friday, citing the launch of a new podcast, "Pants on Fire with George Santos." Federal prosecutors did not immediately respond, though the defense noted that the government opposes a delay. He is required to pay the restitution 30 days before his sentencing on Feb. 7 & could face additional sanctions if he fails to pay in time.
1/29/25 Update: Santos had his February sentencing delayed until 4/25/25, a judge ruled Wednesday. 4/4/25 Update: Justice Dept. is seeking a 87 month sentence for Santos [see post #154 for more info].

'Santos says he expects to receive maximum sentence: ‘I’m totally resigned’

"Santos, a controversial figure, said he fears for his safety and plans to make an application to serve his sentence in protective custody.

“Number one is, I plan to serve the entirety of any [incarcerated] sentence in solitary confinement because I fear for my safety,” Santos told Gaetz. “So it is definitely not an easy task, and it’s a monumental one to do.”
