A female passenger died after being set on fire by a man on a New York City subway train Sunday morning, according to police.

Around 7:30 a.m., a man, who police believe is about 25 to 30 years old, approached the victim on the F train and intentionally set her on fire before fleeing the scene, NYPD Det. Austin Glickman told CNN.

I just read about this case on the news and came here to see if there was a thread. This is horrific.

It is absolutely horrific! Poor woman. She had fallen asleep. I hope they catch the perp and very very soon. The pic looks pretty fair to someone that might know them.
Jeez, and then he just watched while she burned. Sorry for the NY Post but that's one of the only papers not behind a paywall these days.

"The suspect who allegedly lit a sleeping passenger on fire inside a Coney Island F train sat on a bench and watched her burn to death in a shocking pre-Christmas killing — then sneaked away when unwitting cops told him they needed to “clear the space.”"

According to CNN online article seems a suspect had been taken into custody in this IMO horrific incident. December 22, 2024 CNN online article by Lauren Mascarenhas and Gloria Pazmino entitled ‘Suspect arrested in the killing of a sleeping woman set on fire on a NYC subway car’:

IIUC the suspect is not yet identified. And the victim had not yet been named. MOO

It is so sad that no one tried to help her.

What would be possible to do to help in this situation unless you have a fire extinguisher or a fire blanket (which people don't normally carry with them). It'd be really hard to put the fire out without a fire blanket or a fire extinguisher. If you try to use clothing to stop the fire it can just fan the flames.

I wonder if some fire accelerant had to be present, considering intensity of the flames.

There was alcohol bottles by the victim, but it was unclear if that had anything to do with what transpired. Let me find a link!

Eta: link about the alcohol bottles:

Maybe someone could have stopped him before he lit the fire.

Maybe there was no one else in that subway car?

“Police officers conducting a routine patrol at the station encountered the victim on fire inside a subway car, NYPD Det. Austin Glickman told CNN.”

“The officers “smelled and saw smoke” that prompted them to investigate, leading them to the subway car where they discovered the victim was on fire, Tisch said.”

It doesn’t sound like there was anyone else present to even call for help, much less to help the victim? :(

why does someone do this?
Sadly @acutename difficult to know. It is so horrid when individuals do such things to harm others… apparent unsuspecting and innocent victims. SMH.

And I am neither a police officer, investigator, lawyer, therapist, or related. Just an elder parent. But I am going to indicate I suspect that the alleged assailant might have some deep self-hatred perhaps?

If the detained alleged suspect is the responsible individual, I hope there is a mirror in their cell. MOO

Flames can be smothered with a coat.

Woman killed after being set on fire on New York subway train

The woman, who has not been identified, sat motionlessly aboard a stationary F train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue subway station in Brooklyn at about 7:30 a.m. (1230 GMT) when an unknown man calmly approached her and used a lighter to set her clothes on fire, the New York Police Department said.

So an unarmed man killed an innocent subway rider. JMO.
