GUILTY NY - Garnett Spears, 5, dies of salt poisoning, Chestnut Ridge, 23 Jan 2014

  • #281
Garnett Spears had a sodium level so high it was "not compatible with life" four days before he died, a doctor brought in to consult on the child's case testified Wednesday at his mother's murder trial.

"The child was very sick; I did not think he was having seizures," Dr. Ariel Sherbani said about his exam of Garnett on the evening of Jan. 19 at Nyack Hospital. "I was very concerned."

Sherbani, a pediatric neurologist, said he was called to consult on the Spears case on Jan. 18 to help determine "whether the child was having seizures and, if so, what type of seizures."

On the evening of the 18th, he said, Garnett was "awake, alert and seemed fine."

Yesterday's LoHud article was updated last evening with more details from court Wednesday. Article says no trial today, resuming Friday. New details:

Under questioning by Westchester Assistant District Attorney Patricia Murphy, Sherbani said he was "puzzled" by what Lacey Spears described as seizures her son had as an infant, when she said his sodium level was found to be even higher than it was at Nyack Hospital.

On the morning of Jan. 23, however, "he clearly deteriorated," Sherbani said, adding, "It seemed like a catastrophic decline in the child's condition ... I remember being shocked about it."

He said a CAT scan revealed cerebral edema, which he described as an increase in fluid in brain cells, which causes them to crush each other in "a vicious cycle ... death can ensue very quickly."

Garnett Spears died later that day.

Also testifying was Dr. Neelina Thakur, an epilepsy expert, who monitored Garnett's EEG on Jan. 18 and 19 and found "nothing to suggest that he was having seizures."

Harmony, thanks so much for your comments, and for adding the pic of Garnett. There aren't many of us here following his case, but we are all pretty dedicated to seeing it through. That poor little guy has no one sitting on his side of the court room. No one. Lacey's dad and sister are sitting on her side, supporting her. I wish I lived close enough to go and sit there for him.

Such a beautiful, smart, funny, vulnerable little man-- so many people would have loved to have and raise him. I love his little "no front teeth" pic. Breaks my heart. I just hate these killer mommy cases.....i

He was a beautiful child. His case touches me deeply and brings me to tears for all he went through in his short life. Many members are distracted with a few big cases going on right now- Aaron Hernandez, Jodi Arias, etc. I added his cute pic to my avatar and a justice statement to my signature to draw some attention to his case.

I also wish I lived close enough to attend and sit in support for him.

Hello ! I am following too. It seems as though there is very little information to be found and discussed in this case. Sad :(

Would also like to add that I hope Lacey Spears is put away for the rest of her rotten life. What she did to her son through out his whole life was not child abuse Imo, it was torture. And although she did not intend to kill him it was only so she could continue to torture him.
Rip Garnett.... No more torture... No more pain.

From the above article: Garnett had surgery at 1 month old to correct what Spears told friends was acid reflux. A feeding tube was later inserted in his abdomen, allowing doctors, nurses — and Spears — to administer nutrients because, she said, he'd go days without eating and couldn't keep food down.

I call BS on this! My daughter was born with acid reflux, which she didn't outgrow, and it's been 13 years. First of all, we couldn't even get a diagnosis of GERD made on her until she was 10 mo. old, and had already had a Barium x-ray. Second, the treatment isn't a feeding tube! It's medication. You mix it in their applesauce.

Wanted to add another point- I see now she's been claiming he wouldn't hold food down. Well, if that truly was the case, besides acid blockers, they could've tried to prescribe anti-nausea meds like Zofran. It's just NOT standard procedure to give a 1 mo. old a feeding tube for GERD, no matter how hard Lacey tries to spin it!!! I heard the latest claim is that they're trying to say maybe he had diabetes or Addison's disease, neither of which there is a basis for in his case!!:maddening:

P.S. I'll be following this trial and not Aaron Hernandez's.

I'm watching, too. What we can do is witness for him -- "watch" this trial from our online link-ups and witness his ~mother's~ trial. Watch those people who surely loved him while they cared for him, and hurt for him, and now will bear witness against this monster who loved herself so much more that she loved her own flesh and blood. I'm sure we all wonder what GS felt about his sickness and pain. Did he wonder why he would hurt so much and have such headaches and why these people were poking and prodding him -- he had to know they were trying to make him better. Then GS would bounce back ~again~ and flash his little snaggle-toothed smile with his eyes as well as his grin. Ahhh, I'm better now. Maybe I can go home and not hurt anymore.

Yes, we will watch this trial for him, and we will rejoice with him since he is now in a place where there is no such thing as pain or headaches or nausea or just feeling rotten and wondering why. Yes, he is playing and running and giggling and rolling in green grass and feeling a love that he never imagined possible. And he will be doing that for a long, long, long, long time. And we will be happy for him.

:heartbeat: .. :autumn: .. :sunshine: .. :justice: .. :star1: .. :grouphug: .. .. :rose: ..

Thanks, K_Z. You are wonderful!

Whatever juror is making comments needs to shut up.

Is everyone aware there are video clips of the trial? http://www.lohud.com/story/news/crime/2015/02/09/spears-trial-garnett-hospital-video/23148687/

Also, something about the timeline confuses me. It seems she took him into the bathroom a few times? And his blood levels were checked shortly before the final trip and were normal? Didn;t he have diarrhea before the sodium levels showed they were spiked?

Is this possible? Am I wrong? K_Z, help me out.
