WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — An unsympathetic district attorney is seeking up to life in prison for a woman convicted of killing her 5-year-old son by poisoning him with salt.

Lacey Spears, 27, of Scottsville, Kentucky, is due in court Wednesday for sentencing. She was found guilty last month of second-degree murder in the 2014 death of Garnett-Paul Spears at a suburban New York hospital.

"My office will be asking the court to sentence Miss Spears to the maximum sentence allowed under the law, which is a life sentence," DA Janet DiFiore said.

But Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore said after the verdict, “This was not a close case. … There was one conclusion to draw and that was that Lacey Spears murdered her child.”

New York woman gets 20 years to life for killing son with salt

"By not imposing the maximum, I'm exhibiting something you didn't show your son - namely mercy," said Judge Robert Neary in the Westchester County Courthouse in Valhalla.

What the Judge said -- Wow!

I'm glad this is a good lengthy sentence, but a large part of me wishes he didn't show her such mercy.

  • #468
I agree. I think she deserved the max. But I'm glad she has 20 years to think about it before even applying for parole.

Spears showed no emotion when she was sentenced.

Acting state Supreme Court Justice Robert Neary said Spears' crime brought her son "five years of torment and pain." But he said he was not imposing the maximum 25 years to life because "one does not have to be a psychiatrist to realize you suffer from Munchausen by proxy."

After the sentencing, defense lawyer Stephen Riebling said it was odd for the judge to bring it up because Spears "hasn't been diagnosed with any mental illness."

The defense, which filed an appeal Wednesday of Spears' conviction, had asked the judge for an even lighter sentence, the minimum 15 years to life.

BBM. Appeal of conviction filed, also.

I wonder if her sister or father attended the sentencing? Haven't found any references to them being in the courtroom.

Well, yes, it could (should) have been a tuffer sentence, and even though time flies, 20 years is a long time. Her son would be 25--26 years old, 20 years from now -- handsome, prolly a college graduate or post-grad, probably with a pretty girl on his arm. Who knoze what he might have become? We will never know because it will never happen. What a gift he was; what a treasure. I do think the human part of her loved him & was proud of him, but she let the inhuman part of her control her life -- and his.

When I ponder these children who are now in that ever-growing part of Heaven, I always pray that their good days far out-numbered their terrified, horribly painful, and wondering-why days when they were still on this earth. I never saw a tally, but I want to think that Garnett had more good days than bad. And I am hoping -- in a very un-Christian way that I regret, but there it is -- that her bad days are every day and that she will know that there is no escape from them as her son knew there was no escape from his hurt-all-over days.

Let me stop, and let her bad days begin.

so in 20 years can she be granted parole.......and be a "mother" to more children......to torture to death? :furious:

what a travesty......

How old will she be in 20 years? Maybe she will be too old to have biological children and never be allowed to adopt. Okay, found it. She's 27. No way will she be having kids at 47. I had my daughter at 40 by IVF with tons of fertility drugs. 40 is about the cutoff age for your fertility.

The 27-year-old mother convicted of killing her 5-year-old son by poisoning him with salt was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison Wednesday by a judge who said Lacey Spears suffered from a mental illness but still committed a crime "unfathomable in its cruelty." http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/loca...acey-Spears-Salt-Poisoning-Son-299014351.html

Bedford Hills Correctional Facility is the only maximum security female prison in NY, so I think it's a good guess that's where Lacey will be going. She is lucky-- it appears to be a pretty good prison for women, as prisons go.

From the little bit I read, they have a model program for prison mothers, so they can stay involved with their young children. I hope that family-centered approach is a painful reminder every day to Lacey that she no longer has a child, and will not be a part of any of these programs.

No way will Jodi walk with LWP!!! Here comes Perryville! And that is my opinion. I'm so sorry for the Alexander family. Stealth juror is to blame. Jodi is the one who loves to corrupt children. The convicted murderess is the domestic violence abuser- Travis Alexander was the victim of Domestic Violence.

Ain't it the truth!!!!!

If it wasn't so sad and so sick it would be laughable that this b itch claimed to be a victim of domestic violence.

Poor Travis, when he realized how crazy Jodi was, he broke it off with her. She planned her murder trip carefully, thinking she wouldn't get caught. The violence that woman inflicted on poor Travis is gut wrenching.

It's deplorable that she was allowed to live like she was at summer camp most of the time she was in jail. I hope some heads rolled over that fiasco.

Jodi is a criminal with a criminal's mindset. She thinks rules don't apply to her. She is the most dangerous kind of evil, evil without a conscience. May she rot in hell.

So true. Let's hope the parole board keeps her there forever. What she did to Baby Garnett and Garnett the Great is deserving of life behind bars (or at least beyond her ability to ever procreate again) :moo:

Will there be anybody who will attend the parole hearing(s) to speak for Garnett (assuming that such a thing is allowed in NY) -- and to plead that LS be denied parole? That's a long time from now. Are there caring family members? Garnett was so young, he may not have been able to meet and make impressions on many people. It's worrisome, IMO.

I think we have heard about members of Sharon Tate's family always being present at parole hearings for the convicts involved in the Tate/LaBianca murders. And they are still in the slammer.

Yes, a premature worry, but that's me all over, folks. Just wonderin' and SMH...

Not premature. I had the same thought. I hope parole fails over and over for a long time.
