So I tried googling and couldn't find my answer (not a good sleuth I am haha) I don't even know if I really want to know but.....
How are zoo animals captured? Are they taken as babies from the wild or are they adults and just captured? I'm sad thinking about this but my curious mind want to know?

Today, many of our new animals come from other zoos.*Through a mutual commitment to conservation, zoos work together to protect the growing number of endangered animal species.* By continuously shifting the animal populations, zoos not only keep their collections fresh and exciting, but they also help to preserve the genetic diversity of each species.*They do this through Species Survival Plans (SSPs) coordinated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.*

Some species are so rare that they have only a few animals left in captivity. For example, as of November 2009 there were only 116 Guam kingfisher birds left on the planet, all of which can be found in zoos.*When there are so few animals left, zoo officials must work together to find out which animals have the best chance for successfully breeding. This may mean moving one of our adult animals to another zoo where there is a potential mate.*Or it could mean that another zoo sends us a couple of young animals in hopes of giving them a good chance at reproducing.*

However, animals weren’t always brought to our Zoo under such carefully orchestrated means.*
From its beginning up through the 1970s or so, the Zoological Society committed to paying for and acquiring animals for the Zoo. As part of the Zoological Society of Milwaukee’s (ZSM’s) centennial celebration, we took a look through some previous ZSM publications to get the details of how a variety of animals came to the Zoo.

Now there's many websites also claiming its done with harm to the animals. I think it depends on where you get the info as to the answer. Here's the full article

I really feel for April as a pregnant animal at a zoo at this point.....I understand conservation, research, etc. but I can only watch a few minutes at a time now because I feel like this is and continues to be orchestrated to a huge PR promo driven by the Animal Adventure and whoever their PR folks are.

But hey get that $$$ while you can ....we see it all time....I do get both sides of the story......April and Oliver are beautiful to watch and it is hard as the average person not to be fascinated, intrigued and interested...which I clearly am....since I keep checking on them!

I somehow missed the April craze in the beginning. How long have they been waiting and following her on camera to give birth?

3/27 Evening Report
Keepers, vet, and Jordan agree - we are getting there! Her mammary development has continued to slowly increase. Photo in comments. This is Good! We do not expect any additional back end swell, so all judging is now done based on udder changes. You will notice keepers continuing to snap photos of the underside to document changes. April's attitude is good, though she did strike at (and miss) the vet again - we just think she was giving him a hoof (hand) out the door.

Earlier this afternoon, my GMA and I were just glued to the TV. Even she thought it was time and she hasn't been jumping at every tail-raise like I have. As of now, I'm thinking I'm going to lose the bet I made with her today. Tomorrow by 1pm our time or I'm out a quarter. LOL

LaborOfLobe, thanks for the update. There is a big difference in Aprils mammaries from the update video yesterday.
Before the end of this month, we will all have a new member to our blessed family.
I'm going to be an Aunt!!!

I have changed the name of my Giraffe from December Diamond to September Sapphire. My b-day is September, so I feel better bout the name change.

You will have to pass out these instead of bubblegum cigars! I like September Sapphire, too!

OMG!! I scrolled back as far as I cared to on the AAP's FB page and found this from JANUARY 13TH:

Wanted to share a quick photo of April and her large belly!
We receive at least a dozen comments, messages, or other inquiries daily, to see if she has given birth yet.
Trust us! You will all know when the process starts or she surprises us with a calf! We are as excited as you!
With the right timing, we will live stream the birth and process before and after.
Like our page and select "follow page" so you will be notified when we begin!
Let me assure you we are close!

JANUARY 13TH! What in the world? I found comments saying "we're close!" going back to January 2nd! I understand that it's hard to predict a due date in a giraffe, but that is so far off it's mind blowing!

Awwww, too darn sweet!! Perfecting Pink, if you need any help making the adorable Giraffe cookies, I'm your gal.
I already have a stash of blue and pink cigars but since baby Giraffes are not born everyday, cookies and candy cigars will be just fine.
:loveyou:

Ha! I just noticed the nutter butters. :happydance:

Every single time I comment about a behavior, April responds...I think she is a tricky girl. I honestly thought she was going to actually tip over this time!

I wish my babies were still little so I could make these for their classrooms. Those were the days!

Isn't that the truth. My son Cole turned 31, 28 February. :sigh:

Lol! It's so hard to watch her lay down! I was just sitting here cringing and waving my hands around telling her to be careful! I'm afraid she is going to bonk her head on the wall when she tips and leans like that!
