A massive search by law enforcement agencies and volunteers is entering its sixth day for a missing man from the region.

Drones, helicopters, K-9 units, ATVs, and hundreds of searchers have been scouring a heavily wooded area in Sullivan County for 35-year-old Harold Hoyt who went missing in the early morning hours of Thursday, March 30, when his truck had a flat tire, got stuck, and then ran out of gas along Galligan Road in the town of Forestburgh.

Hoyt's sister, Jennifer Nicholas, said the story of how her brother, who lives in the Sullivan County hamlet of Glen Spey with his girlfriend, went missing is very "strange" and is hoping beyond hope that her loved one is found safe.

Harold Hoyt, and a friend who was traveling with him, experienced a flat tire while navigating on a back road area of Sullivan County, along Galligan Road. The two ended up becoming lost in the woods, with only one making it to safety.

Hoyt’s friend, who managed to make his way safely home, placed a call for help on Saturday morning, according to the missing man’s family.

“His friend said they became separated in the woods, and while he was able to get home, he did not call for help until Saturday,” said Hoyt’s sister. “No one has heard from or seen my brother since.”

Harold and his friend were lost in the woods on Thursday. The friend found his way out and went home the same day, but waited until Saturday to check to see if Harold had made it home.

This sounds all too familiar. I'm thinking of the current search in FL for Theresa Hartley who was with a friend in Ocala National Forest when the friend's truck got stuck. The friend told her to wait there and he would go for help, He waited for two days to ask for help and by then she was missing.

How did Harold & his friend get separated, I wonder? His friend called for help on Saturday. When did he arrive home?

I can't fathom just leaving my friend out in the woods and then waiting so long to let people know what happened.

Strange with all these different kinds of search efforts going on for days he still hasn't been found.
But I haven't seen anything about nearby waters being checked...

Galligan Road:

BTW, this remote part of Sullivan County is far south of the famous Borscht Belt. The Forestburgh town center, such as it is, is well off this image to the northwest along NY 42.

Hoyt went missing after getting a flat in a remote part of Galligan Road in Forestburgh. Rescue teams have been searching the rugged terrain for the past few days.

"Adirondack Mountain Rescue is back in Forestburgh, New York this morning as the search continues," the Adirondack Mountain Rescue team wrote on Facebook.

I can’t think of any logical explanation why someone would do that! There is no evidence of any wrongdoing or crime, but the only reason, in my opinion, that someone would wait is to cover up something nefarious. And I don’t mean anything particularly bad on the part of the friend or Harold. Even just shooting on private property where they weren’t allowed. The friend might have thought Harold would get mad if authorities were sent out?

Yes, I read that thread also. Such similar circumstances. Who waits two days to report someone in distress?

Sullivan Co.....Sullivan County.

The NY at the beginning indicates the state.

Why would you both go in the woods after getting a flat tire?

If you need help and don't have a phone, your best bet is staying by the road with the car.

This case is making me say "hmmmm" already.

The DEC, which has been leading the logistics of the search, has defined an approximately one-mile search grid that is being tracked on a map. This is wooded, steep terrain where Hoyt is believed to have possibly traveled on foot with his buddy after their car ran out of gas. While the buddy made it safely home, and officials say has been cooperating in search efforts, Hoyt remains missing, said Sheriff Schiff.

“They just went in different directions. They thought they knew where they were. One was going in the Port Jervis direction and the other was going somewhere else and they thought they could walk out and where they were supposed to be,” he said. “One did and I am hoping that maybe Harold found his way out also and is just worried now with all the commotion that this could be problematic for him. We want to get the message out, just contact your family and let them know you are okay. That’s all we need.”

Each of those who spoke during the news conference pledged to continue their agency’s search, with about 25 percent left to cover in the defined search area.

It was noted that a couple of pieces of trash belonging to the two were found early on, not far from where their car was abandoned. No significant signs of Hoyt have been discovered since. Those involved in Tuesday’s on-site briefing said searchers will continue to cover the targeted terrain over the next few days.

Thanks for the update!
We still don't know when the friend came home and if that had anything to do with him calling police 48+ hours after Harold was seen.
He may have been exhausted and slept for a day then called Harold and realized he wasn't home yet.
He may have believed like many still do you have to wait 48 hours to report an adult missing.
I want to know if the dogs found anything proving he was there. The trash could have been in the car and dumped.
But I'm not willing to suspect the friend yet when there could be other explanations and info we haven't heard about...

I saw some teams have just gone out to search, I hope they will find him today!

im from the area. its not so desolate here we do have woods but its not the Yukon , its possible he got hypothermia or walked off some cliffs or met up with wildlife ...but its ultra sketchy .
they need to be searching other areas like the river or at the dam
We do not know who this "friend" is and who would ditch their friend in the middle of the night in the woods. who would take off into the woods on a chilly spring night after getting a flat where is the car now ? whos car was it . cars go down that road all the time . all they needed to do was wait .

Interesting comment from LE (the first one).

I wonder if something related to the trash is more behind why they'd even suggest there's a possibility he'd think the commotion was problematic?

And like others who had mentioned the other current similar thread but in FL, this feels a little deja vu-esque.

Why would they go in opposite directions, did they have a disagreement?

I think they don't live in the same town and they were both trying to get home.
(Speculation only)

eta: Looking at the map, Glen Spey - where Harold lives - is in the opposite direction of Port Jervis, where I'm assuming the friend was going.
