Hi seattlechiquita!

It's OK to have two threads. This one is for Information and Support only.

The mother here looks so young and I believe her story checks out, so I don't think she's involved. I think her lack of hope shows that she knows what her baby's father is capable of.

Sadly, I agree.

This story is fairly local for me. Every time I pass the local 24/7 news station (CNY YNN) it seems they're talking about this. I don't get our local paper and I don't do local news much, because we don't see stuff like this a lot generally speaking in the upstate NY area. Utica I am unfamiliar with, it's a couple of hours from me or close to it, but I do know there's a big problem with Rx pill abuse, meth, and worse all over the upstate area, and they hand out misdemeanors and probation for most of the first-time offenders. Sadly I have a bit of personal experience knowing someone very well who has had this situation in their lives. The fact there was no jail for heroin being in the car in the case I know of was mindblowing.

BBM

That's weird, the case I was a juror for, was about just being the money man for a crack seller. We convicted him. I don't know his sentence. I think it was probably around eight years.

It was probably a plea deal so they wouldn't have to take it to court.

Blood around his brain that causes seizures? :thud:
Is there anything other than abuse which causes blood around the brain?

Birth trauma can. An illness that causes swelling of the brain tissue can. Congenital issues can. Also, the medical condition may have not been correctly stated.

If mother was in rehab, sounds like Dad may have found baby more than he could handle. If baby tends to be sickly and fussy...maybe it just got to him that night.

That's something I find interesting...who takes a little baby out for a late-night walk in just a diaper? Interesting that he would phrase it that way. In a diaper. Late at night. I suspect something happen late at night, when baby was just in a diaper.

IMHO this child looks Ill in every picture. Malnutrition, dark circles...poor guy.

I just want to point out that a thin baby or child is not always the victim of malnutrition. Medical issues such as food intolerances or malabsorbtion can cause a child to be underweight. Allergies can cause dark circles under the eyes. Seizure medications (such as Keppra) are famous for causing depression. Some seizure meds (such as Zonegran) can thin the blood, which can make eyes appear dark. We know that the baby had health issues -- he needed breathing treatments and had seizures.

While there are known parental issues in this case (drug use, late night partying, loud fights, altercations with police) that suggest the baby may have not been getting the best of care, I do want to point out that children with chronic health issues (even from the most loving and attentive families) often appear ill in their photos because...they are ill.

So, to believe dad's story, we basically have to believe that some random kidnapper was so incredibly lucky that he (1) happened upon Levon in the 3 minutes while dad was opening the back door & got out of sight with the (presumably crying?) baby in that same 3 minute stretch; and (2) happened to kidnap a child with the 1 parent out of 10,000 who would not report him missing for 2 weeks? Sure. Yes. That all sounds very likely.

This just breaks my heart beyond belief! It brings back so many feelings and thoughts of little Aveion Lewis who was murdered by his step-father here in Roanoke Virginia. I remember exactly where I was when the Amber Alert came through on my phone. My gut instinct told me Aveion wasn't kidnapped. For days and days I was glued to my computer and to the TV, praying my gut was wrong this time. One evening I was taking a huge bag of garbage out the door and I had it cradled in my arms so the bag wouldn't burst and suddenly it shifted and the way it laid across my arm it looked like the shape of a body inside. I froze...at that moment a voice inside said "he's in a garbage bag"...I just totally lost it and broke down sobbing! I couldn't stand the feel of the garbage bag!! The next day they found Aveion's body in the landfill. I'm still haunted by that.

Birth asphyxia is a common cause of seizures and respiratory difficulties in infants.

The mother was in rehab when the baby 'went missing' - which leads me to wonder whether or not she may have been a substance user during her pregnancy. If she was, babe would likely have shown evidence of neonatal abstinence syndrome. Infants dx w/ NAS are known to be tremulous, irritable, have malabsorption issues, etc. In other words, this baby would have been extraordinarily high need.

I wonder what the weather was like that evening ? If babe was agitated, house was warm, that could explain the 'just a diaper'.

Utica Police ask residents not to organize search for missing infant Levon Wameling, search private property only http://ow.ly/m2h0j

Police say they are aware of a movement by area residents on Facebook to organize a search for the baby, but are asking residents not to do so.

They are also advising citizens not to search the nearby area of the father's home on Jay Street as it may contaminate the area police are searching,

Police ask that Utica residents only search their own property and areas just outside of their homes at this time. They say there may be a time when they ask for the public to assist in an organized search, but they are not requesting that now.

The hell? This sounds really weird and different to what I am used to reading in WS.

I've seen it many times. They don't want evidence disturbed. They usually put out the warning for about a week or two, and you see a lot of reports of police searches during that time, then you notice they've stopped saying it, and the police searches have cut back. It's like they want first shot at any evidence.

I think it's vital to remember that the parents both failed this child. She was in court appointed rehab *IE drug court mandated therapy in order to retain her rights as a guardian & shave off time from the sentence*. I sincerely doubt that she was the only drug user in this couple. & court mandated rehab is not ordered for pot.

I agree that something happened to this child, at night and while he wore a diaper. Pure speculation but the baby reminds me a lot of children born to parents who abused opiates during pregnancy (or were on methadone / suboxone as a replacement therapy). I don't understand where people get that a drug lord kidnapped a child for a drug debt. That's a fantasy. We aren't in a 3rd world nation where children are bartering tools and there's bandits running loose. Frankly, a drug dealer may take a child (female usually) and use for sexual purposes but even that is a rarity. A dead child is rather bad for business. Most dealers DO have a common honor and that's not to hurt children or animals. It doesn't go over well in prison if you have. The father is obviously guilty as sin. The only way I could see this not ending up with a homicide, is if a neighbor noticed the child being neglected and took him to care for him. But even then, you'd suspect that same person would come forward by now. The young boy has very unique features, is sick and needs medical attention - no one can fly under the radar with a sickly child.

I am hoping for the best and if the best doesn't happen - I hope who ever is guilty serves time, that justice is swift and that those that are responsible for letting this lil' guy suffer - are not out there reproducing to make up for the one they lost.

I've been "away" with class and finals for a few weeks but stopped by from time to time to get the great news for Shaniya. I came across this case a few days ago but was unable to post so sorry if any of this has been repeated (I skimmed to catch up). Is the two week timeline based soley on when the Dad said he went missing or is there someone else saying that is the last time THEY saw the baby? Was the baby in a stroller or car seat on the porch? Who sets down a 9-month old baby to go open a back door, why not just take him with you?
