So is this also a writing/editorial mistake?
Gilbert's mother says she received a strange phone call from him the day after her daughter disappeared.
"He called me on the phone. He said he had a halfway house and that Shannon was there," she said. "She wanted to be off the streets and he was trying to help her."
Dr. Hackett denies calling Gilbert's mother, and police have not named any suspects in the case so far.
http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=news/local/long_island&id=8069901
And here's one from NYPost:
Missing escort Shannan Gilberts mother, Mari Gilbert, told cops someone saying they were Hackett called her after her daughter vanished last May and said she was with him and that she was OK.
Hackett has denied making the call.
http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/...chnology_a4HyUDmIa03bCsUpH250xJ#ixzz1ZvRlmx9t
And here's one from Newday:
Mari Gilbert said Hackett asked her to have Shannan call him. "I said, 'Fine, I will.' Then he hung up," Gilbert said Sunday.
Until Sunday, Hackett had denied to Newsday and others that he called Mari Gilbert. He first confirmed the call to "48 Hours Mystery," but he denied Mari Gilbert's account of what was said.

I could list several more, but it's really not neccesary. The claim has been verified, imo.
MK, please go ahead and list any more reliable news organizations that state CPH denied ever calling Mari (not that he denies the "content").
1) NY Post - this is not a denial that he ever called Mari.
2) Newsday - I sent an e-mail to the author for clarification. I strongly suspect this is a mistake (that CPH denied that he ever "called Mari"). Unless the author can source the specific denial with a transcript, date, footage, other witnesses to the statement, etc., I have serious doubts.
3) ABC Local - I read this as "he denied that he called Mari and told her that he ran a halfway house."
Kat, what I'm suggesting here is that the MSM and many contributing to these types of bulletin board discussions have some form of group think here. When CPH is asked "did you call Mari Gilbert and say that you kept Shannan at your halfway house?", and he say "No", this is not the same as saying "Did you ever call Mari Gilbert?", and him saying "No."
We know the former occurred (we saw it on video), we don't know the latter occurred.
I understood what you meant, Inspector, I just don't agree with you on this point. To me, it's clear that there are many reports from various msm news outlets, which clearly state that CPH denied ever making the call to Mari Gilbert. Is it possible that every news outlet got that wrong? I suppose. But if 5 people tell me they saw a duck walk across the road, I feel pretty safe in the assumption that, at some point, a duck walked across the road.

Wow, I just got off the phone with a friend of mine. He has a coworker who he tells me crazy stories about from time to time. We always joke that this guy is so messed up that he could indeed be the serial killer.
Well, tonight I started asking my friend to tell me more about this guy. So he tells me a little personal information about the guy. One of the things he tells me would put the guy in the area of Oak Beach on a weekly basis. So I keep digging. Then he tells me that the guy is a reservist. So I asked when the last time he was deployed and he said that he was deployed about 2-3 years ago. So I start thinking that this could explain the cool-down period in 2008: A reservist deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan in 2008. Interesting for sure!
.....may have training in communications, recon/stealth......
Older army sandbags made of burlap would be hard to get hold of by the regular public, but I'd think that a reservist outfit would have plenty laying around.
The burlap would be great for making things like helmet camo to break up silhouettes in an urban environment. Although many active combat units probably just use MARPAT helmet covers in Iraq and Afghanistan, I wouldn't be surprised in reservists learned to build "scrim" for their helmets using burlap, much like they would teach in basic training.
Burlap would be truly awesome for making a full Gillie Suit, if someone really wanted to play wannabe sniper.
Goathair, any idea if this guy has a Gillie Suit or is a wannabe sniper, by chance?

Inspector,
..I will see if I can dig up any more info on him...
I normally agree with you about the duck, MK. I also agree that CPH denied making "the [halfway house']" call to Mari. I've seen it for myself and heard his verbatim denial on his video interview with ABC Local.
So that he denied making "the [halfway house]" call is already a proven, documented fact.
What's not a clear fact, however, is that he denied ever calling Mari.
Newsday, and Newsday alone, seems to be differentiating between "ever calling" versus ever making "the [halfway house] call".
I can't find another MSM story that states that he never, ever called Mari.
I respectfully disagree that there "many reports", or any reports for that matter, other than this particular Newsday article ,that make this clear distinction. This is what raises the red flag for me that Newsday got it wrong.
If early on (prior to his letter to 48 Hours) he omitted in his interviews with the media the fact that he called Mari in the days following Shannan's disappearance, that's actually understandable, and not somehow documented evidence of lying.
I'm sorry to be nitpicking this to death, MK, but this is really bothering me because I believe both CPH and Mari.

woman’s torso, stabbed and stuffed inside a suitcase, washed ashore in Mamaroneck. One of her leg bones and her right foot with her toe nails half polished washed up from the Long Island Sound later on March 27 among the rocks in Cold Spring Harbor. On March 28, her severed leg bone washed up in a plastic bag a short distance away at the estate of Cablevision billionaire James Dolan. The rest of her has never been found.

"Press reports from April 1996 indicate that two severed legs were found on the shores of Davis Park, on Fire Island, by two seasonal residents walking along the beach. The toenails of one foot were painted red and the right leg had 3 1/2-inch scar on the rear calf and L-shaped scar on the shin. The left leg had a 3 1/2-inch scar on the inner side. "
Couldn't help but notice that both of these pairs of legs that washed up seemed to be halfway through a pedicure ....... I'm starting to like AC for this SK.
btw, if i don't respond to you it's probably because someone had me banned, nice tactic
Goathair,
In a later post, you confirmed he was a sniper.
Weapons Company, 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines has a sniper unit based in Garden City. Probably the only reserve outfit on Long Island with such a unit, so I assume this is the one. Being that the 2/25's Services Company is also located at Garden City, I'd venture to guess that a sniper could pretty much get their hands on all the burlap they ever wanted.
As you suggested, the dates would match up pretty well.
Dates that GB4 went missing:
1) July 9, 2007
2) July 10, 2009
3) June 6, 2010
4) September 2, 2010
Dates of 2/25 Deployment in Iraq:
From: http://www.marines.mil/unit/marforres/4thMarDiv/25thMar/2ndBn/Pages/UnitHistory.aspx
"In September 2008, 2/25, with individual augments from 1/25 and 3/25, deployed to Al Anbar Province in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The battalion was split in two 500 marine "half-battalion" units to pursue separate missions: Force protection of Al Asad Air Base and counter insurgency operations in the area around Camp Korean Village, Iraq. 2/25 Demobilized and returned to Garden City, New York on 10 April 2009, after turning over the security of Al Asad Air Base to 1st Battalion 8th Marines. In the Summer of 2010, over 400 Marines from 2/25 deployed to Mozambique to train with the local military, and conduct humanitarian medical Civil Affairs in towns near the capital."

Am I reading this right? The torso of a woman stuffed in a suitcase washed up in Mamronek. One of her leg bones, and just the right foot with half polished nails, washed up in Cold Harbor Springs? So...the other foot wasn't found there, is that right? And then, her severed leg bone washed up somewhere else? And the left foot was never found, correct?
And then, we have 2 severed legs that wash up on Fire Island...either with only one foot attached, or both feet attached and only the toenails of 1 foot painted (the news article is murky wrt whether or not both feet were found). And these legs match...ummm...some kind of remains (no clue what they are) found off Ocean Parkway?
Have I got it? (Holy canoli this is confusing!)
