the NY Post is not always accurate news, more sensationalized...

Police believe they know the identity of the Long Island Ripper, The Post has learned.

Cops on Long Island are "looking at somebody," said a law-enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation.

He refused to elaborate.

Many in NYPD were born and raised on LI, and many from LI Law Enforcement-if not originally from NYC (one of the 5 boroughs), have family origin from NYC. The bond between the areas can be strong for something like this. I'm gonna go with the NY Post's unnamed source on this one.

I'm guessing that he strips the women of all belongings, clothes, jewelry...NOT to prevent them from being identified---after all, he had been doing this for years before the bodies were found---but to prevent any stray fiber or prints (like on a ring the woman is wearing etc.) on their clothes or jewlery that may lead back to him.

I'm not ready to let go of my theory from yesterday...the SK is grabbing them after they come out of a job. He knows where they are working that night.

On July 10 nearly two years ago, Ms. Barthelemy saw a client and then deposited $900 into her bank account, her mother said. That night she called an old boyfriend, but he did not pick up. Then she disappeared.

I agree. I think he snatches them after a job too.

If these things are true the disposable phones the guy knowing certain things he should and should not do etc. It will make him Harder to catch.

I completely agree. All his actions are to prevent being caught.

Whoever killed four prostitutes, and possibly four other people, and then dumped their bodies in heavy underbrush along a beachfront causeway on Long Island appears to have a sophisticated understanding of police investigative techniques, according to people briefed on the case.

This is what I have been saying.

I think there is a very good chance this is a cop.

Possibly one who didn't make it as a cop.

Or even a current highly regarded cop.

One of the first four girls even said herself... some of their client's were cops. They wouldn't have had a lack of information about the escort business, even though they wouldn't be arresting those girls.

It's possible it's just someone who is very interested in police work.

The cops would just have even more knowledge of what police knew and didn't know. It would make it easier for them to get away with it for longer.

I will not be the least bit surprised if they end up arresting a cop for this.

I will not even be surprised if Shannan is then among the victims as well.

Looks like he may have used disposable cells to contact his victims (NY Times article), but he then may have used the victim's cell (not stated in NY Times article) to taunt Melissa's sister.

How far is the distance between Times Square and where the bodies were located?

Seems like he very well could be working in Manhattan during the day, and laying his head in Long Island (or used to) at night.

I know some of you theorized about that earlier in the investigation, but it seems even more likely now.

I read somewhere today there is a feeling he could be in LE or was at one time. I think it was in the article about how this SK is so in tune with the way police work.

Of course now I have also heard the correct name of the doctor who called Shannan's mother in listening to that interview What a case !!!

Is it true that one officer discovered all 8 bodies?

:doh:You and my elderly mom. From get-go my mom said "Oh that's a cop". I was like "Nah, no way".

Oh, that is interesting. Yes, I think you're right.

Just curious, How do you get to Manhattan from LI, besides auto. Ta

Thanks Verity, It doesn't look like JB's house is a waterfront lot. He may have an easement to the bay however. Just wondering which direction Shannan ran before she was grabbed.

JB definitely has access to the bay down the path opposite his house which cuts across a vacant lot. He may own the lot, may have an easement across it or it may be part of the community association property. A gated waterfront community like this would almost certainly have an association beach for everyone in the community to share. It looks like that is further to the right, but the lot opposite JB's house could also be one.

I think we can file this in the department of completely irrelevant info though...or did I miss something?

By the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road). Have several friends who commute from LI to work in midtown Manhattan.

Many people from NYC are very familiar with Long Island from going out there in the summers while growing up. Summer homes, second homes, family friends with either summer or second homes, relatives, etc.

What the cop ratio out there, Epiphany? Retired cops move out there?

BBM: Sorry to answer myself, but I want to take the part back that he may own the lot. That can't possibly be true with the asking price on his house, also it's listed as waterview, not waterfront. If he had deeded waterfront access, that would probably be noted on the listing too, so my third suggestion is most likely of the three suggestions, it's communally owned property, to which I'll also add another possibility, which is the path opposite is a vacant lot owned by someone else or the town, which over the years has developed into an unofficial access to the bay for JB and others.

Re transportation, the LIRR is not good for points east of Ronkokoma, so for the east end there is a high speed luxury coach called Hampton Jitney, but that would not serve Gilgo Beach.

If you want any more useless facts, just ask me, I'm full of them today.... Going crazy waiting for more news from LE - can't imagine how awful these families feel on this roller coaster with so little information, and what appears to be a false report of an arrest.

True, but i don't think SG's family have a reason to lie about the doctor's phone call.
It kind of makes sense.. Shannan went around knocking other doors around the neighborhood until someone else opened the door..??

Why hasn't anyone else listened to this?!!!

26 minutes in - interview with Shannon's sister - she talks about the doctor, about talking to JB, finding the earring, the police finding Shannon's coat and then losing it, and more...
