Hi! I'm new, and I signed up so I could contribute to this thread because this case is driving me insane! I live in N.Y. and also have spent a lot of time on Fire Island. I'm not familiar with the Gilgo Beach area but I do know Fire Island. One thing I wanted to say is in response to a few posts I read speculating about clubs, prostitution, etc. with regard to Fire Island. Fire Island is comprised of 11 or so communities. Very few people live there year round. In the summer, there are a lot of families and some of the communities have a lot of share houses which are largely 20 somethings but there are also share houses with older people - 30's, 40's and 50's. Some of the communities have a lot of partying, but many are very quiet and don't even have a store, never mind a bar or restaurant. In short, the focus is on going to the beach - it's very laid back, there are no cars, and it's not in the least hoity-toity (although there are some very expensive houses in some communities.) It's NOT at all a place where call girls would be hanging out and it's pretty unlikely anyone would would ask one to go out there. The few bars or clubs that are there are very casual - really just local watering holes, nothing upscale in the least.
The only vehicles that are allowed out there are ones that get special permits e.g. people who live there year round (very few people by the way) construction vehicles. Of course there are the police vehicles as well. They have to go along the beach for the most part.
You have to take a ferry to get there, although someone with a permit could drive in from the Lighthouse area.
In some areas and at certain times there is practically no-one on the beach, which is amazing but also sometimes freaks me out a bit. It is a bit desolate out there at certain times.
Anyhow, that's probably more info. than anyone needs or cares about, but I just wanted to give people a more clear idea of what it's like! It's not the Hamptons, or even the Jersey Shore!
