LE hasn't announced whether a crime was committed ... so I figure this would go here for now. Mods: Does this need an "unidentified" tag?

How could that not be a crime? How many 8 month old babies can get themselves to the river and jump in?

Body of Baby Boy Washes Up Under Brooklyn Bridge, Police Say

A family visiting New York City from Oklahoma made a shocking discovery on Sunday — the body of an infant floating in the East River in the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Investigators were trying to identify the boy, who was about 8 months old, to find his parents and to determine how he came to be in the water in Lower Manhattan, the police said.

Monte Campbell, 46, of Stillwater, Oklahoma, said he retrieved the infant from the edge of the water after his wife, Diana, spotted the baby floating face up near a pile of debris, wearing only a diaper.

Right?! It most likely is a crime. I'm thinking the same thing ... but they haven't determined cause of death, how the baby ended up in the water, etc. (Yet.) They're still trying to ID the baby, too.

So sad.

In one article it said they were searching the water for any other bodies. One way it could potentially not be a crime is if it was an accidental drowning of a parent/child or entire family.

Opinion: Oklahoma family a bright light in a horrific tragedy

The thought of an infant wearing only a diaper and floating face up in the East River under the Brooklyn Bridge will stay in the minds of New Yorkers for a long time to come. But that horrific image will be drowned out by the actions of a heroic doctor and his family visiting from Oklahoma.

‘I thought it was a doll’: Baby found floating in river dies

Officials want to know: How long was the boy in the water before an Oklahoma family spotted him Sunday afternoon? Why was he wearing only a diaper? Where are the adults who were supposed to be caring for him?

A medical examiner will determine how the boy, about 8 months old, died. Police say he showed no signs of trauma.

I cannot imagine how difficult the aftermath of finding this little one must be for this man and his family. My thoughts are with them.

So was this baby actually still alive when he was found? Did he still have a heartbeat? Because if that's the case then obviously someone else couldn't have been very far away from him... dead or alive.

No pulse or respiration but the death was recent enough that CPR was attempted.
